We Caught Fire

Mr. Sniffles

The air was beginning to grow chilly, even for LA and Dess smiled as she thought of pulling out her huge sweaters and boots for the upcoming fall season. The band was almost done recording-Andy said he wanted to write one more song for the album, but was having a rough time coming up with anything. As she looked out from their small patio over the cityscape-Dess felt lonely. Andy had been so consumed with getting the record done that she hardly saw him anymore and his absence was only strengthening the doubt in her mind. Sighing Dess looked down at her phone and seeing the time she decided that she should probably go get Andy out of bed so that he could get down to the studio.

Their apartment smelled like fall leaves and spiced pumpkins thanks to the candles that Dess had bought to give herself a little sense of fall. As she walked back towards their bedroom, Dess stopped in her tracks as she heard a terrible coughing noise coming from behind their door. Slowly she pushed the door open, the coughing growing louder as she fully walked into the room and was met with Andy, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, his arms crossed over his chest as he coughed harder.

“Andy…” Dess spoke softly and as Andy looked up at her she tried to keep the wince off of her face. He was pale and sweaty looking, his eyes tired and as he sniffed loudly Dess could tell that his nose was stuffed up.

“Ugh…I think I’m sick.” His low voice was nearly impossible to hear over his stuffy nose and suddenly Dess was reminded of the time he had broken his nose and sounded very similar to how he did now. She moved over to him then, her hand laying gently against his forehead and he did feel very warm.

“Stay right there…” She said, kissing the top of his head before she rushed off towards the bathroom. A minute later Dess was back and shoving a small thermometer into his mouth.

“I-dow-ann-e-ick.” Andy said, his teeth still clamped down on the thermometer and Dess just smirked. He looked miserable, his hair was plastered to his pale face and he was still bent over, his chest heaving as he tried not to cough.

“101.2…I’d say you’re full on sick. Get back in bed while I go call Jon to tell him…” Dess left Andy then, taking the thermometer with her as he sighed heavily and laid back against the pillows, his arms crossed over his chest and a scowl gracing his face. He couldn’t be sick right now-they only had a few more songs to get done and then they had to start thinking about shooting Legion of the Black before their touring started up again.

Andy sighed even louder, but regretted it because it just caused him to bust out into another coughing fit. His whole body hurt-it felt like he’d been run over by a truck and he had a stuffy nose, which is the one thing in life he absolutely hated. Thinking on things-Andy realized that maybe being sick wouldn’t be so bad…he and Dess could stay home together and spend some time with one another. He’d been pretty absent lately and Andy knew that it was getting to Dess, but he had to finish this record and they were all making sacrifices do so. Andy looked up as Dess entered the room again, a coffee mug in one hand and a small pill bottle in the other.

“I called Jon. He’s not happy, but he hopes you get better soon and said that they can just work on Ash’s backing vocals for now. Here, two of these and drink this slowly.” She smiled down at him before taking a seat on the edge of the bed, passing him two pills and the mug.

“What is this?” The smell coming from his mug was making his stomach turn, but Dess only scowled at him and Andy shrunk back. Throwing the pills into his mouth and then taking a gulp of the steaming liquid, Andy almost spewed it back out all over Dess but he was able to get it down. It was terrible, bitter and thick and as he moved to sip at the concoction more slowly Andy tried to keep the wince off of his face.

“An old family recipe from my Scottish grandmother-Honey, vinegar, milk and lavender tea. It should help your vocal cords and help boost your immune system so you can get better quicker. I know-it tastes like Satan’s piss but I swear it works.” She smirked at him as he took another sip and gagged softly.

“Did the men in your family die at an early age from this shit?” He asked, a smirk on his lips as Andy downed the rest of the brew and set the coffee mug on the bed side table.

“My great grandfather lived to see a hundred and two-thank you very much. Did you want to stay back here? I thought I could make you a little sickling nest on the couch so you could at least watch some movies…” Dess smiled down at him and Andy felt his heart melt. She was so loving towards him, even though he knew that Dess had been feeling sad lately because of him and all Andy could do was nod.

“Give me about ten minutes…” She leaned down, placing a soft kiss against his lips and Andy moved away slowly, his eyes wide as she pulled back and looked down at him, her eyebrows raised in a questioning gesture.

“I don’t want to get you sick…” He croaked and Dess just shook her head and leaned down once more, her lips coming to rest on his as he felt her fingers rubbing softly at his temples.

“…I’ll take whatever you got Biersack…” She smiled down at him as she pulled away and moved to walk back out into the livingroom.

Andy moved to get out of bed, stopping half way through as he had begun to feel light headed and needed a moment. He bent down, picking up his Batman pajama pants and then struggled for a few minutes to try and get them on. He hated being sick-hated feeling helpless and like he couldn’t function, but he was enjoying the attention that he was getting from Dess. As he slowly walked out towards the living room Andy smiled to himself and was actually kind of happy that he was sick and couldn’t record. More time with Dess always made him happy and he had definitely been missing her lately.

“Come on sickie…” Dess teased as Andy turned the corner and saw that she was just finishing tucking in one of her huge comforters underneath the end of the couch and Andy only shook his head and smiled.

“…I hate being sick…” He grumbled as Andy moved to sit on the edge of the couch and swung his long legs up. Dess just smiled down at him as she pulled the blanket up to his chin and then moved towards the coffee table. Andy looked over at her, his body growing warmer underneath all of his added insulation and he couldn’t help but smirk as she held up two DVDs, one in each hand.

“Okay. So where do you want to start-Tim Burton Batman or Chris Nolan Batman?” She wiggled each box in turn and Andy only laughed at her cheesy grin and shook his head.

“What do you want to watch babe? I don’t really care…I’ll probably be asleep half way through…” He yawned and Dess just shook her head and wiggled the DVDs at him once again.

“Uh-uh. You’re the sick one so you get to pick. Besides I’m going to run out to the store and pick up some stuff for you…so it’s up to you.” She wiggled the Tim Burton box at him over enthusiastically and he just smirked and pointed at her obvious choice.

“You don’t have to make me anything special Dess. I just want you to come over here and kiss me until I’m not sick anymore…” He pouted up at her and Dess just shook her head as she placed the DVD in the player and then moved over to the desk in the corner to grab her purse.

“Well I’m going to. I love you…so quit being a baby and let me take care of you. I’ll be back shortly. Do you have any requests?” She asked, her lips coming to rest against his softly before she pulled away but Andy grabbed for one of her hands and held her there for a moment.

“Your love? Oh and cheetos…” He smirked up at her and Dess could only shake her head as she moved out of his reach and walked towards the door. She looked back at Andy, laying there on the couch-sick and grumpy and she just laughed, closing the door behind her softly.

Andy laid there, his attention on the movie tuning in and out as he felt his eyes grow heavy. Dess didn’t need to baby him, but from his broken nose experience, Andy knew that Dess loved to take care of people. Time seemed to drag as he laid there, his attention only half on the movie as Andy wiggled around, trying to find a comfortable position as his eyes wandered over their shared apartment. He had loved having his own place, but now as Andy looked around he realized…he and Dess needed a place that was truly theirs and he smiled softly as he thought back to things that had been set in motion earlier on in the summer.

“Babe? You awake?” Her voice was soft and Andy turned to see Dess behind him, coming through the door with grocery bags hanging off of each arm and he moved to get up and help.

“Nope. Stay right there…I got this…” She grunted, her face strained as she struggled and Andy threw back the covers and moved to take some of the bags.

“Andrew!” She dodged around him and moved towards the kitchen, her voice playful yet stern and Andy just huffed as he moved to sit back down on the couch.

Andy laid back down on the couch and tried to focus on the television, but it was hard when he knew that Dess was in the kitchen, working her fingers to the bone to try and make him feel better. Soon enough a delicious smell wafted out towards him as he laid on the couch and Andy felt his stomach grumble. He heard water in the sink and soon Dess was walking around the corner, a dish towel in her hands as she wiped them off and looked down at him. He looked up at her silently, his arms out in front of him and all Dess could do was shake her head and move towards him.

“I’m making soup for you and more stuff for your throat…” She sat down on the couch and Dess laughed as Andy scrunched up his nose at the mention of her special brew.

The couple laid there for most of the day and Dess only left Andy to stir the soup a few times and then finally to get him a bowl of it when it was ready. He ate it gratefully, his eyes lighting up as she looked on and just smiled at him. Dess had to force him to drink more of her special concoction for his throat, but Andy was starting to feel better by the days end, so he became more willing as the day went by.

“So you’re kind of a baby when you’re sick…” Dess said as Andy finished gulping the last of his third bowl of soup and reached for his coffee mug that sat on the table. He winced as he took a big gulp and Dess could only laugh as he downed the sick brew as quickly as he could manage.

“I always have been…my mom used to hate it when I would get sick because I’m such a whiner.” He laughed as Dess leaned back against his chest, her soft hair tickling his nose and making him sneeze loudly.

“Moira was like that too…I always ended up taking care of her since my mom would get so irritated.” Dess laughed at the memory and Andy reach out, running his finger tips across her cheek softly as they both sat there quietly.

“You still really miss her…” He said quietly and Dess turned to look at him, the tears in her eyes evident and she just nodded.

“I do too babe. I do too.” Andy wrapped his arms around Dess then, bringing her close to him as he held her there.

Even though he was sick and Dess had been taking care of him, Andy knew he would always take care of Dess. Always.

Notes

Alright...more reviews would be lovely. That's the first thing.
Also I swear I did not write this because Andy is actually sick right now, but it's still a funny coincidence.
I will not be updating this again until Sunday because I will be out doing fun Halloween things with friends all weekend. We are almost to the end though people so REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW.
Lastly-I work at a grocery store and we are heading into our busy season with the holidays, so I will try my hardest to update everything at least every other day but it may switch to every two days. I don't want to do that, but I have to sleep at some point. <3 you guys and I hope you have an awesome weekend!
P.S-Lets all keep Andy in our thoughts and hope that he gets better as soon as possible...especially since I've got a ticket to go see them on Halloween.
