We Caught Fire

Sonny

The day of Moira’s funeral dawned overcast and rainy-a perfect representation of how the group felt that morning. Odessa had spent most of her night down in the lair, working on last minute details and Andy had left her down there, alone. Now the couple was seated at the small kitchen table, silence lacing between them like shoestrings. The guys all were rushing around, getting last minute things and Odessa sighed as she looked at the clock that hung over the stove.

“We need to head out. Can you rally the troops? I’ll be out in the car.” She looked to Andy who just nodded and watched her walk away.

Even in mourning, Odessa was beautiful in an all black dress that hugged her hips and ended right above her knees. He noticed that she was wearing stockings and that her heeled shoes made her taller, but not so tall that he could look her straight in the eyes. Her light hair was down around her shoulders, straight as usual and she was wearing minimal makeup. Andy himself was wearing a dark suit, the white shirt crisp and blinding against the rest of his all black outfit.

“You guys ready?” He called out towards the living room and watched as his bandmates all walked towards him.

“Yeah man. You gonna be okay?” Ashley asked as he came up to the taller man and slung an arm over his shoulders.

“Yeah. This is going to be really hard, but I have to be there for Dess. Hey…why do you guys have your gear?” Andy asked as he looked back towards Jinxx and Jake, both of whom were carrying a guitar and a violin.

“Don’t worry about it Andy.” Jinxx said as he passed him and walked towards the car. Andy shrugged as he turned to lock the door and looked up towards the house one last time. He walked over towards the car and smiled as he saw Dess behind the wheel, singing loudly with the radio.

When you lose a part of yourself
To somebody you know
It takes a lot to let go
Every breath that you remember
Pictures fade away but memory is forever

Andy climbed in, his hand reaching for Dess’ and he smiled as she took it, but she continued to sing. He looked back at the guys, CC and Ash were on their phones, Jake had his eyes closed, but Jinxx was staring at the back of Dess’ headrest, his eyes wide. Andy had known that Dess could sing, she sang all the time when they were in LA, but the absolute pain and anguish coming from her voice right now made him want to cry.

The song finished and she pulled the car onto the road and Andy sighed loudly. He had never been in this situation and he wasn’t sure how he should be feeling right now.
The car ride to the funeral home was mostly silent except for Dess singing softly to what was playing. Andy was okay with that, he loved to hear her sing and he knew that when Dess sang it was soothing for her. In the back of his mind, Andy wondered what was going to happen after today. Would Dess come back with him? Would she want to stay here in Virginia? He knew that her mother had planned on selling the house and he also knew that she hadn’t planned on telling Dess. He frowned, Andy wasn’t Rose Montgomery’s biggest fan and he knew that the older woman wasn’t terribly fond of him.

Ohwell.

“We’re here. I have to go talk to the director.” Dess stopped the car, pulling the key from the ignition as she turned to him.

“Want me there?” Andy asked as he unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to her.

“No. Go ahead and take the guys in to the receiving room.” She smiled softly at him and sighed as his lips touched hers softly.

Andy and the rest of his bandmates exited the car and walked towards the small building. There were a few people walking around outside and Andy felt his stomach twist as they walked past a long black hearse on their way through the door. The receiving room was full of people who none of them knew, although Andy spotted both Trish and Brady over in one corner, both girls were crying softly to one another. He walked over to them, his smile soft as Trish stood and walked into his arms.

“How are you guys holding up?” He asked as he hugged the younger girl and his heart broke. Hugging Trish was almost like hugging Moira for one last time.

“We’re okay…” Trish smiled up at him, her eyes were red and puffy.

“Brady?” He asked and the small girl just looked up at him and Andy noticed that she had her fingers wrapped tightly around the opposite wrist.

“Brady listen…I know about that night. I want you to know that you don’t have to do this…I’m here for you. The entire band will always be here for you.” He had kneeled down and was face to face with the younger girl. She was crying and suddenly she moved so that her arms were wrapped around his neck. Andy kissed the girl on the side of her head and pulled away slowly.

“I’ll see you girls in a bit.” He smiled down at them and then turned. Finally his eyes came upon Dess and he walked towards her.

“Hey there beautiful.” He smiled and she gave him a soft one in return.

“Hey. They’re going to start letting people in soon. I know you guys wanted to put things in to her casket, so if you want to go last…”Andy reached out then and brought her small frame against him. Dess didn’t cry, infact she hadn’t cried for days and he knew that wasn’t normal.

“Do you want me to walk with you?” He asked as she shook her head.

“No, I’ll send the guys in first, then I will follow and you go last since what you have is bigger than our stuff.” She motioned towards the object in his hands and Andy only nodded.

A few minutes passed and Andy watched as small groupings of people entered the main room, some of them approaching the open coffin, while others sat down. Moving his body so that he could see into the room, Andy noticed that his bandmates were slowly approaching one by one. Ashley was first and as he laid a Daisy into the coffin Andy also saw him place a small stuffed Hello Kitty and one of his bass picks in with the small girl that was once so filled with life. Next was CC and Andy felt his heart break as he watched his usually happy friend approach the coffin with tears streaming down his face. Another Daisy and a set of CC’s favorite drum sticks joined Ashley’s things. Jake and Jinxx were next, both bringing Daisies and guitar pics. Jinxx also placed in her coffin a small necklace that had the BVB logo emblazoned on it.

Andy held his breath as he watched Odessa come forward. She was steady as she approached, but he could tell that she was shaking. A hush fell over the room as she reached the coffin and he watched as she pulled a small rock from her purse. It was the rock that Dess had brought back from Ireland and he felt his heart stop as Andy watched her kiss the smooth surface and place it on her sister’s still chest. Dess kneeled down, her face coming close to Moira’s and Andy watched as Odessa stayed there and spoke softly to her. He wanted to run up there, grab Dess and hold her until things got better. Andy knew though that that wasn’t what Dess needed right now. No, she needed to say goodbye to her little sister.

A few minutes passed and finally Dess stood and moved to sit in the front row. It was his turn and Andy took in a deep breath as he began to walk down the small aisle. He could feel the stares on his back as he moved and he was fighting the tears in his eyes. He reached the small coffin and his breath caught in his throat. He had never seen a dead body before and he wasn’t prepared to be looking at one now. Moira’s cheeks were lightly blushed, so much so that she looked as if she could have been sleeping. He smiled as he noticed that Dess had put her favorite beanie on her head and that Moira was also wearing a BVB wristband. Her dress was black and seemed to hang loosely on her shriveled frame.

“Oh Moirabear…I miss you so much buddy.” He whispered as he pulled the Daisy from his back pocket and laid it with the others.

Andy placed the small stuffed bear next to Ash’s Hello Kitty and then he moved to shake out the other object that he carried. He looked down, taking in her peacefully closed eyes and slight smirk that would forever rest on her lips, and he placed the Jacket that he had gotten her for Christmas over her small chest. “The Innocent” blared up at him and Andy wiped at his cheeks as he looked down. He knew that she was at peace now, but it was so unfair that God would take away someone who was so full of life and joy. He bent down, whispering a soft ‘Love you’ into her ear before he placed a slight kiss on her cheek. He gripped the side of the coffin, his knuckles white as Andy gazed down on his biggest fan one last time.

Turning, Andy walked over and took his place next to Dess, his hand reaching out to her as their fingers intertwined. A small man came up to a podium that was behind the coffin and began to speak but Andy didn’t hear him. His eyes kept drifting over towards Dess and it broke his heart to see that she wasn’t even crying. She needed to cry…he knew that she was still in a deep denial as to what was happening and he wanted to shake her out of it. Finally the speaker finished what he had to say and Andy thought that that was the end of things.

Suddenly he noticed that Dess was no longer sitting next to him. She was walking up the small stairs towards the stage with Jinxx and Jake behind her. Andy noticed now that Jinxx was holding his violin in his hands and Jake held his acoustic guitar. The small group gathered in the center, the Daisies, Zinnias, and Willow surrounding them as all three of them looked down towards Moira. Jake and Jinxx both took seats on small stools that had been placed there, but Odessa approached the microphone.

“Moira was my only sister and I loved her dearly. She was always herself, something that I was always jealous of. She loved this band fiercely and I am so happy that they could be here today to send her off. The thing about Moira-she was never afraid of her fate, she wasn’t afraid to die. She knew that her story would be passed on through our memories of her. Sadly my memories of us together will forever haunt me. This song is for you sissy…I love you dearly.”There were finally tears in her eyes and Andy sucked in a breath as a familiar strain of music began to come from Jake’s guitar.

He watched quietly as Odessa began to sing and everything else became silent.

Notes

What song do you think she's going to sing? Hmm...

So do are you guys enjoying this? Just wondering because reviews are dwindling and that makes me sad. Please bring a smile to my face with all of your love...because I love you all more than you will ever know.

Also, if you're interested, I have gotten into writing a new fic, something much different than this one, but here it is if you want to check it out and tell me what you think.
