Savannah:




















She had sworn to herself that she would never let it happen again, but it did. She never asked to be thrust into this situation. And of course her boyfriend Justin seemed like such a nice guy before. What happened?

She went into work the next morning wearing a long sleeve shirt on the hottest day of the year so far. Her arms were covered in bruises. She couldn’t afford to let anyone see them. Luckily, her makeup covered her facial bruises.

“Savannah, what are you doing wearing a long sleeve shirt?” Her best friend since diapers, pointed out. His name was Jeremy but he liked for people to call him Jinxx.

“Jinxx, it’s nothing, okay? Besides, it’s air conditioned in here.” Savannah said, returning to her spot behind the cash register as a customer approached the check out.

Jinxx just shook his head and returned to stacking CD’s. He had never let Savannah know this, but he had been in love with her for about three years now. It started when they hit their senior year of high school. Savannah had grown over the summer. Her face thinned out, she got taller, and shed her old, awkward self that Jinxx had always known. She had become a woman.

Years passed and Jinxx was still afraid to say anything to her about his feelings. He told her most everything else but when it came to how he felt about her, he couldn’t seem to find the right words. He knew what he wanted to say, but he couldn’t make his brain function correctly around her.

“Have a great day, sir!” Savannah said cheerfully as she handed the plastic bag to the man across from the desk and Jinxx went around back to stand with her.

He glanced down at her cloth covered arms again and grimaced. He had his suspicions, he just hoped they weren’t true. “What are you doing after work?” He asked, trying to sound casual.

Savannah frowned. “I have to get home right away after work. Justin wants me home tonight.”

“Of course he does.” Jinxx muttered under his breath.

A few more hours passed and it was time for Savannah to head home. Jinxx had been assigned to close up for the night.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” Savannah gave him a small wave and a smile.

He half smiled back at her. “Yeah, sure.” He nodded.

He watched her leave and prayed that she would stay safe until tomorrow morning when he could see her again. Hoping was all he could do for the next sixteen hours while she was at home with her boyfriend and he was sitting at home, alone, with his TV remote and a bag of chips.

He closed up shop and started his short walk home. He was lucky his apartment wasn’t too far from the music shop. He stopped in front of Savannah’s house and just watched from the other side of the street. The lights were still on, which meant they must still be up. He didn’t want to leave the spot he was currently glued to, but he had to get home. He would see her in the morning.

He started walking but kept his eyes on the house. Just knowing she was in there with him made his stomach churn.

Suddenly, the front door flew open and he watched as Savannah stumbled out into the yard. He backed up out of the light and watched from the shadows.

Her face was already bleeding and Justin was just making it worse. He kept beating her with his fists and throwing her to the ground. He listened to her beg and plead for him to stop, but he just kept pummeling her.

When he no longer heard her cries for help, he stepped out of the shadows and into the light where Justin could see him. “Do you feel like a man when you push her around?” He shouted at him, trying to control his burning anger.

Justin glanced up and saw Jinxx standing there under the lamp light. “What are you gonna do about it?”

He had a point. Justin was much stronger, and much more built than Jinxx was. It was no use, he couldn’t do much. “She’s probably not even breathing anymore!” Jinxx shouted again as he watched Savannah’s still body lying in the grass.

Justin shrugged, chucking a glass bottle at her feet. “I could care less.” He said, and ran off down the street.

Jinxx took the opportunity and lunged at Savannah’s lifeless body on the ground. She wasn’t breathing and he didn’t know how much longer she would have. CPR was the best idea he could think of.

He lifted her upper body up from behind the shoulders and held her dead weight in his shaking arms. He tilted her head up to face him. He eyes were closed, and her lips were parted open. It was as if she was ready for this. He leaned forwards and pressed his lips against hers, breathing his own air into her lungs.

Her eyes opened and she saw Jinxx’s face right up against her own. She did her best to push him off her just to let him know she was alive.

“Jinxx, I’m okay!” Savannah struggled against him.

He pulled back, looking into her life filled eyes again. “You’re okay.” He stated, grabbing her and pulling her into a hug.

She winced at the pain. “Jinxx, um…”

He immediately pulled back. “Right… Sorry…”

She smiled at him. “I forgive you. And thanks for saving my life.”

“It was the least I could do.” He said. “I care about you a lot, you know.” He admitted, looking down at the grass.

She reached up as best she could and caressed his cheek. “I know you do. I know.”
