Fight for F.E.A.R.

Night in the Shadows

"Guys! Guys! Help me!"

Audreys POV
I got back in my bed and pulled the thick blanket over my body. I couldn't stop shaking. A cold sweat was beginning to form on my forehead, and goosebumps were rising on my arms and back. I could hear footsteps running and people began to shout over one another.
"Get her to the infirmary!"
"Is she even alive?"
"Come, Destroyer, she must be freezing!"

The tents flap swung open, the cold breeze following it in, brushing along my skin, making me shiver. The pain in my side was elevating, to the point I felt like a knife was being twisted in it. I looked to see the five men in black walking around something, someone. CC was carrying a limp body. Blair?
"Blair?" I called. "Blair?!" no response.
Jake rushed over to me. "Are you OK?" he touched a hand to my forehead. I could feel the cold sweat myself. "Jeeze Audrey, you're freezing cold," he said as he took off his leather jacket. He unzipped his black and grey hoodie and removed it, placing it over my shoudlers. He pulled his jacket back over himself. "Are you in pain?" I nodded, struggling to hold back the tears. I'm worried I retore the wound by running, the skin feels jagged. He looked into my eyes, and placed a hand tenderly on my side over the bandaged wound. He closed his eyes, as did I as I began to feel a warm tingle, as if Jake was extracting the pain. It began to slowly subside, until it was only a very dull ache. I gasped in relief, finally my muscles began to loosen and relax. I opened my eyes, he was staring into them with his glossy chocolate colored ones. He held up and eyebrow, scanning my face. He nodded and stood, returning to the small group around Blair's unconscious body. I pulled Jakes hoodie close to my body, placing my arms in the soft thick fleece and coton sleeves, admiring the warmth it gave off. I was too exhausted to move, so I intently listened from my bunk.

"How did you find her?" Andy asked in his low voice.
"I was walking in the general direction of where you last saw her, where you found Audrey. She was running, stumbling more like, along when she saw me. She ran to me and collapsed into my arms," CC said as he layed her down on a cot across the tent.
"She must be terribly dehydrated," Ashley chimed in.
"I doubt she's had water for some time," CC replied.
"She hasn't," I said from my bed. All five men turned their heads to me. "I was the one with the water jug. She didn't have one the night we fled into the desert. We rationed the water, but that means she hasn't had water since we were separated. I got here, what? Three, almost four days ago?"
"We need to get some fluid in her, or that alone could kill her," Andy added.

"We will have to force fluid down, or she will be dead in a matter of a day or two," Maria said as she walked into the tent, picking up the conversation. "We only have one option at this point. We will have to stick a tube down her throat and pour in the water. However, things could go badly very easily. She could wake and vomit it all up, or she could even wake in the process. It is the only chance she has though," she said as she turned and rummaged through a box. Jinxx walked around the tent, lighting each of the lanterns so we could finally see. Blair was very sickly looking, her white blonde hair was plastered to her forehead with sweat and sand. Her body looked like rag dolls on the bed. "Here, hold her up," Maria said as she returned to Blair's bedside, a thin, long, clear tube in her hand with a funnel on the end. CC brought her uo to a sitting position and Ashley held her limp head up. "Hold her very still, now, just like this. Do not move one inch. Things could go south very quickly. Do not let her move."

I quickly looked away. I could hear as the tube was placed in Blair's throat and I had to hold myself back from throwing up. "Here, here now. Hold this, right here. I'll pour the water," Maria said. I began to hear the water dropping against the funnel head. I clasped a head over my mouth, my stomach twisting in knots, and my throat began to spaz. I had to resist my own urge to vomit. I placed my fingers in my ears, waiting for a few moments till I saw the shadow Maria had cast in the lantern light move away from the bed. I let go of my ears, hands dropping to my lap, as I glanced uo to see CC careful laying Blair back on the bed. "This is all we can do, anymore and she will be worse off from the overload of fluid," Maria added as she returned the tube to the box. She said goodnight and exited the tent.

Jake walked back over to me, followed by Jinxx.
"Are you still cold?" Jinxx asked quietly.
I huddled into Jakes blanket. "a little bit. This is helping," I said as I blushed, averting my eyes from Jake.
"Here, let me help," Jinxx said as he walked a few feet to the small fire pit on the center of the tent. He squatted down, rubbing his hands together. He gently blew into his closed hands. He turned his palm downside and waved a hand over the pit, a flame igniting in the pit and began to crackle. He stood and returned next to Jake. He chuckled at my shocked expression.
"That was...amazing," I whispered at a loss for words.
Jinxx placed one hand across his stomach, and bowed theatrically, smiling as he turned and left the tent with Ashley and Andy. I looked over to see CC still kneeling by Blair's bed.

Jake followed my gaze. "You know, I probably looked a lot like that a few days ago," he said quietly, his voice lower in pitch than usual. "You know, I know that's my job, the Mourner, but I know his feeling. When Andy came uo saying you were already almost dead, I was so determined to help you live. I'm so tired of burning bodies and digging pits for their graves. I just needed that...hope, that someone would live."
"That's very noble though, Jake," I replied quietly.
He sat on the edge of my bed, next to my out stretched legs as I shifted, sitting up with my back propped on the headboard rails. He delicately placed a hand on my knee as he stared down. "I don't do it to be noble, I did it because it was the right thing. People keep dying," his eyes met mine, "and I thought I should at least give you the fighting chance."

"I wish I had some gift like you guys. You can take say people pain, Jinxx can conjure fire. What else can you guys do?"
"Well, Ashley is known as the Deviant. He can confuse people, make them feel outcasted too, which helps in fights. CC is the Destroyer. He has incredible strength...he destroys things at will. And Andy...Andy is the Prophet. He has these dreams about the future. He saw you coming, but wasn't able to get to you fast enough to stop the attack. He can't cool it though, the dreams come at random."
"That's incredible."
Jake quietly laughed. "I guess so."
"Jake?"
"Hmm?" he said as he looked back at my face.
"Th...thank you. F-for saving me, and treating me with respect."
He smiled. "Your welcome, and as for respect, it's what every gentleman should do."

I reached out and placed my hand over his, still on my knee. We both looked down and back in each others faces at the same time. I quickly pulled my hand back, my cheeks hot as I blushed. I glanced over the fire pit and saw CC was resting his head on his hands on the side of the bed.
"Someone's tired," I whispered as I point over to CC.
Jake quietly laughed, "Speaking of that, I'm exhausted," he slowly stood up. "I'll see you tomorrow, Audrey."
"Sleep well, Jake."

He pulled back the flap, glancing one more time at me, and dropped the flap back in place as he walked out. My heart was fluttering. I pulled his jacket closed around my chest, taking in the smell. I smiled, it smelled amazing.
CC was lightly snoring. I got up from my bed and picked up the black blanket I used earlier. I placed it over CCs shoudlers and returned to my bed, fluffing my make shifted pillow. I pulled the blanket back over myself. I stared into the small fire that was making its shadows dance on the tent wall. I smiled. I glanced down at my hand, clutching the pillow by my chin. It still tingled with the electricity I felt as I touched Jakes hand. I giggled to myself and closed my eyes...drifting off to a night of sweet, pleasant dreams in my desert tent.
