Meeting in the graveyard

Chapter Zero

I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock going off, today was the final day i would be able to see my grandmother. Today was her funeral, rolling over I shut off my alarm and looked around the run down guest house I forced myself to stay in.

I didn't want to stay in the main house with my relatives, they only showed up for one thing and that was my grandmother's inheritance. No one besides myself just wanted my grandmother to be here.

Crawling out from under the comfort of my black futon, my feet hit the icy wooden floor and I began searching for my things. I needed to get ready for the funeral and stop myself from feeling so numb.

I quickly found my clothes and started my way to the main house, the only thing on my mind was a warm shower.

"This house is disgusting, it smells like old people... Mommy when will be able to leave?" I hear one of my younger cousin's comment as I walked through the kitchen.

Shaking my head I began hurrying up the stairs to the bathroom, "When we get the money okay sweetie?" my aunt Shirley replied.

Taking two steps at a time I made it up the stairs within seconds, reaching the door to the bathroom I let myself in and pulled it closed behind me.

My head fell back against the wooden door with a thud, I jumped when the shower curtain jerked open and the room filled up with steam.

Feeling my face heat up I was now staring at my cousin Ash's fiance Alex, but what was making me shake is he was completely nude staring back.

He tilted his head to look at me more, I turned my head to left to avoid his green eyes. I flinched when he finally spoke, "You'd be pretty if you lost some weight.." he stated.

Turning away from me he wrapped himself in a white towel and chose to ignore me, the door behind me got pulled open.

My cousin Ash stood there to look at me then around me, before grabbing my hand.

She pulled me out of the bathroom, panicking I tried to think of an excuse as to not get in trouble.

"Devon I know you've been with Granny your whole life and probably never seen a boy up close, but don't touch and I won't touch you okay?" she quietly whispered next to my ear.

I flinched when I felt a cold sensation leave the right side of my neck before she pulled away and went into the bathroom.

The sounds of people downstairs brought me back to my sad reality, after today I was going to alone probably forever.

The funeral was going by in bits and pieces until I saw my grandmother's casket being lowered into the dirt.

I started to shake with anxiety as the dirt began piling higher and more people got up to leave.

"She's gone..." I whispered to myself and stood up to leave, but a man with white hair dressed in black suit came to greet me.

"Devon Shear?" he asked me, I just nodded my head. He gave me a gentle smile and handed me an a black envelope.

Hours passed me by as I sat on my bed in the now empty house, I didn't read the paperwork stuffed in the envelope but the letter written by my grandmother.

She had left me everything. Her house, the inheritance and a black key.

I turned the envelope upside down and a black key clattered to the wooden floor of my room.

I re read the letter four times and it said the key was for an emergency only. i sat there and started looking at the paperwork for the house.

I didn't want to sell the house and move my heart couldn't take it, I needed this place it was my sanctuary.

Jumping to the sound of someone pounding on the front door of my house I stood up to peak out the window of my room.

Standing there were three of the biggest men I've seen and each of them in black suits, I creep backwards and start stuffing my back pack.

My instincts were telling me to run away, I grabbed my wallet and keys last and ran over to the window of the guest house.

Pulling it open I crawled half way out to stare back at the room checking to see if I needed anything, I jumped when I hear the door get slammed into.

The black key I noticed was on the floor, my better judgement telling me to leave it so I did and I took off running into the woods.

_____________________________________________________________________________

I felt tired as I stopped running over a few hours ago, the sounds of the woods were keeping me awake and the fear of being found.

I didn't know who those men were just that something wasn't right about them, I keep the same pace as I come to a path made of gravel.

Looking around I notice the woods were looking more dense as I choose to walk down the path, the feeling of suffocating coming to my mind as I began to hurry down the path.

I was out of breath completely when I came to a opening in the woods. I came to a complete stop as I noticed that I was back at the cemetery.

I was shaking by the time I made it to my grandmother's grave only to stare at a man sitting on her tombstone.

"You're breathing really hard..." said the mysterious man, I flinched as he looked towards me.

Waves of smoke rolling off of him making me cough as he finished talking.

"Sorry I forget other people need air." He chuckled flicking the cigarette out of his hand, I looked down at his feet where my grandmother's grave was to blink.

He was standing on the soil but there wasn't any foot prints, he wore black boots and they weren't covered in mud like mine.

Looking back up I noticed his black hair, the leather jacket and the strong smell of cigarettes. What threw me off was he never looked away as I stared at him and his blue eyes.

"I'm Andy." He announced.

My wits leaving me before I started laughing and wiped at the hot tears streaming down my face.

"I'm Devon... and I'm lost without my grandmother Andy." I choked out as I continued to cry my eyes out.

I didn't see him or even hear him move as I felt a hand running threw my dark brown hair, by the time I looked up I was alone standing in the graveyard.

This is a really good first chapter. Keep up the good work. I like Devon. She's realistic and her fears and sadness are all very easy to relate to :)
