Novocaine Hearts

Jake's POV

A week later, Ashley was finally getting released from hospital. It was due to his concussion that he vomited and lost consciousness like that.
Riley was a whirlwind the day before he was released. She simply threw everything they had into their suitcases, while ignoring anyone who was in the house.
"You should really say something to her" CC whispered as he eyed the bedroom Riley was in. "She hasn't talked to you all week" he continued as Tegan struggled in his arms.
I rested my back into the couch, my eyes flicking between CC and Riley's bedroom.
"She's really pissed at me though..."
"What? You just not gonna talk to her? Look, we've all pissed her off at one point or another. It's like a ride of passage" CC joked.
I grinned and started to shake with laughter.
CC gave me a look of confusion. "Okay, dude, wasn't that funny..." he said shaking his head.
Tegan continued to squirm in CC's arms and he finally let her walk around.
"Tee, what you doing?" CC called to her in a high voice, as she crossed the room.
Tegan didn't turn, she just waddled straight into Riley's room.
"Hey, she might soften Riley's mood" I shrugged.
Barely a minute later Riley paced out of her room, carrying Tegan, but then putting her back on the couch, next to CC.
Normally she loved Tegan. She could spend the whole day looking after her and playing games with her. But not today.
I glanced up at her face and I could tell she had been crying.
"Auntie Ri!" Tegan squealed in her high pitch scream.
"Tee, auntie Ri is very busy right now" CC tried to explain to the 3 year old.
"Why is she screaming?" Kimber called from down the hall.
"She wants Riley" CC called back.
It was quiet for a moment, then Kimber appeared into the room. "I'll take her" she said holding her arms out for her.
"Momma" Tegan copied the action.
Kimber took Tegan away leaving myself and CC.
"Well, suppose no time like now to talk to her" I sighed, getting up from my place.
"Have fun" CC chuckled.
I crossed the room and stood in the doorway from the bedroom.
What I saw is not what I expected.
Riley was standing in the small ensuite, staring at herself in the mirror, flicking what looked like a blade between her fingers.
"Riley NO! What are you doing?!" I acted quickly shutting her bedroom door so no one would hear us and raced over to the bathroom.
Riley was just as quick, locking herself in the bathroom.
"Go away!" She yelled through the door.
"You know that is not the answer! Don't do this to yourself! You're better than that!" I said, pressing my hands against the door.
"You guys all fucking hate me! There is just so much fucking hate!" I could hear the stress coming through in her voice.
"We could never hate you" I said softly.
The door unlatched and quickly swung open.
"Really? Cause it sure feels like you do. It's like you guys try and find new ways to bring me down. Can't you just leave me alone?" Riley said, pushing passed me and grabbing more clothes off the floor.
She messily folded them and tossed them in a suitcase.
"No... Cause I wanted to say sorry... for what I said last week..." I said looking down at my hands.
"Do you even know how many times I went over that in my head, trying to figure out how I was gonna tell Ashley? The amount of times I apologised for fucking up? In a moment of weakness I told Lexa, which was my biggest mistake. I never wanted you guys to know. The fact that you knew... and that you didn't even say sorry... You guys have no idea how shit I feel about myself every fucking day... and the fact that you just kicked me when I was down just made me feel that much worse..." her cheeks were streaked with tears by this point. She plopped down onto the bed and hung her head in her hands.
I had never felt more bad for Riley than in this moment.
"I just want you to leave me alone" she sniffed and rubbed her face.
"Riley, you know that's not what we want... We're sorry..." I said, sitting next to her and placing an arm over her shoulders. "You know we're here for you."
Riley scoffed. "That's a load of shit" she spat shaking my arm off.
"Riley, I don't know what you want me to say! I'm trying to make things better. We care about you and Ashley."
"I want you to LEAVE. ME. ALONE!" She screamed.
There was a second of silence when there was a knock on the door.
"Hey, guys, is everything okay?" Sounded like CC.
Riley took a deep breath through her nose, went to answer the door, but changed her mind and stormed into the bathroom instead. Locking the door behind her.
I crossed the room and opened the door for CC.
"What the hell is happening in here?" He asked.
I pushed passed him and returned to my spot on the couch.
"She wants to be left alone..." I shrugged.
"The hell is happening down here?" Kimber said, coming back down the hall; frustration on her face.
"Jake tried to apologise to Riley and somehow made it worse" CC explained.
"What the fuck did you do?" She sighed and stalked into Riley's room.

Later in the day I met up with Lexa and we met up with Kimber and CC to see Ashley.
"So, how did you manage to piss Riley off more?" Lexa asked as we walked up to Ashley's room.
"I really don't know. I think she's just had enough..." I shrugged.
As Ashley's room was in sight, we saw CC and Kimber with their ears pressed to the door.
"What are you guys doing?" Lexa chuckled.
"Shhh! Trying to hear!" Kimber whispered violently.
The blinds on the window were shut so myself and Lexa leaned an ear against them.
"... can't you back out of it? Say you're still recovering?" Riley pleaded.
"It doesn't work like that Riles..." Ashley sighed.
"I just want out... "
"Out of what? What are you trying to say?" Ashley's voice sounding broken.
"...I need a break..."
"Oh no..." Kimber whispered, then quickly knocked on the door to interrupt the conversation.
"We're good in here!" Riley called.
"It's Kimber, hun. Can I come in?"
We heard footsteps cross over to the door and Riley ripped open the door.
"This isn't a good time guys" she said flatly.
"Riley, it's fine" Ashley snapped.
Riley glared at Ashley. "I hope you feel well enough to fly tomorrow. We're going home" she shot as she grabbed her bag and swiftly strided out the room.
"Hey guys, come in" Ashley called.
"How you feeling? Riley hasn't let me come see you" I explained.
"I figured. She... she's a lot going on right now. But I've been okay. So glad getting out tomorrow" he smiled. "What have I missed?"
"Kids have been driving me crazy... please tell me you're gonna spend time with Seth. He's really worried about you" Kimber sighed as she dragged a chair close to his bed.
"Of course. I miss the kid. Maybe he can come with us to London?" Ashley asked hopefully.
"He still has school. Maybe for one of the shows, if we all go" she said glancing at Lexa.
"How's Tegan?" Ashley continued.
"Being a brat" Kimber rolled her eyes.
"She wanted Riley today, but Riley didn't want anything to do with her..." CC shrugged.
"What?! Nahh, I don't believe you" Ashley shook his head.
CC just shrugged again.
"Oh..." Ashley said, hanging his head.
"What's wrong?" Kimber asked.
Ashley glanced up at me and Lexa. "Should I tell them?" He asked us.
"Tell us what?" Kimber demanded.
"Your wife Ash. I'm sure they'll find out eventually" I said, shuffling closer to Lexa. She gave me a worried expression.
"Riley is going to kill us" she whispered.
"We're already dead to her."
"Okay umm, Riley had a miscarriage" Ashley said simply.
Kimber and CC's mouth's dropped.
"How?! Is she sure?" Kimber said in shock.
"She went to the docs cause she wasn't feeling right and it turned out she was pregnant, but it was too late. She has been working a lot and under a lot of stress, the baby already had a slim survival rate, but it had no chance cause she didn't know she had to take pre-cautions" Ashley sighed.
Kimber looked like she was going to cry.
"These things happen... I suppose it's just really unfortunate" CC added, taking Kimber's hand.
"I think we should just take her advice and leave her alone" I chimed in, thinking of the conversation we had today.
