Novocaine Hearts

Jake's POV

The cab dropped me off at Jinxx's place where my car was parked after I arrived back in LA.
I dumped my stuff into my car and thought I better pop in and say hey.
I jogged up the path and knocked on the door.
After a moment of silence the opened quietly.
"Oh hey Jake. I didn't know you guys were getting back today" he yawned tiredly. Jinx looked like a wreck. He wore sweatpants and a baggy old t-shirt, which looked like it hadn't been washed.
"Yeah, it's nice to be back home. How are you guys? How's Dimetri?"
"He is sleeping like an angel right now. So please don't be too loud" he said opening the door wider and letting me inside.
Sammi, also looking very tired, sat on the couch holding a cup of tea.
"Hey Sam."
"Shhh! Finally got Dimetri down" she said, placing her mug down and getting up to hug me. "Glad to be home?" She asked in a whisper.
"Yeah, kinda... Not sure what to do without Lexa..."
"Lexa?" Sammi said confused.
"You haven't told her about Lexa?" I asked Jinxx.
"Well, I've kinda been busy" Jinxx said giving me a stern look.
Sammi's eyes lit up. "So who is Lexa?"
"She's this girl I met on tour. She's funny and beautiful and free and... she's not what you'd expect."
"She in a band?" Sammi asked excitedly.
"Yeah, guitarist for Novocaine Hearts, based in San Francisco."
"Ohh, I see your problem, she lives 5 hours away..."
"Exactly! I really want her to move down here, but she'd have to talk to her other band members."
"Well, she's stupid if she doesn't. Any girl would be lucky to have you" Sammi said, grabbing my cheeks and squishing them.
"Thanks Sammi" I said rolling my eyes. "Anyways, I'll let you guys be parents to your new baby boy and I've got to go be a parent to my dogs. See you guys later" I said hugging them both and leaving.

As I turned the key into my house I could hear the dogs going mental.
"I'm home guys!" I said through the door.
I was bombarded with my dogs when I opened the door.
I rushed inside to keep them from running out, but they were just focused on me. I knelt to the ground to let them jump on me.
"Hey guys, did you miss daddy?" I said trying to pick them both up.
"Aww Trixy, we need to give you a haircut girl" I cooed, running my hands over her shaggy fur.
I got the dogs settled then I brought in all my stuff and unpacked as best I could.
Afterward, I mindlessly sat down and played Halo, but I felt empty.
I missed Lexa.
I reached for my phone on the side table and dialed her number.
It rung 3 times before she picked up.
"Hey Jake" she said in her bubbly voice.
"Hey Lex. Question. Why aren't you here? Why do you live so far away?" I whined.
"What? I don't know... Cause I don't live there...?" She said unsure of herself.
"I miss you."
"I miss you too. I promise I will talk to the guys and ask about moving, but Jake, what do you want out of this? I know I'm not angel, I have my issues..."
"All the more reason to move down here! All of your band mates have said it; you're better with me! I have never felt like this with anyone, not even Ella. I love you Lex."
"I love you too Jake" she said sweetly.
I smiled at the thought of seeing her again.
"I'm gonna have to make a trip up there sometime."
"That would be awesome! See if everyone wants to come up!"
"Yeah, I'll talk to them."

Later in the day I got a call from Ashley saying he needed help down at Riley's studio, producing her album.
I arrived to frustrated tecs, a stressed out Ashley and a tired Riley.
"Hey Jake" Ashley greeted.
"Hey man, whats been happening?"
"Slow progress... If any. Can you listen to some of this? I've heard it too many times to pick up a difference.
"Riles, Jake is here, do you wanna come out and play 'Is It Just Me?" He said as he held down a button for the speaker.
Five seconds later, Riley emerged from the booth with an annoyed expression.
"You didn't need to come down here Jake" she complained.
I shrugged, "I don't know, maybe I do need to be here. Are these four walls driving you crazy yet?" I asked jokingly.
"Yes... I could go for a smoke and whiskey right now" she said, stretching her arms.
Ashley gave her a look of annoyance.
"Okay, change of scenery time. Take the guitar and the mic. Do you want your voice to kind of sound croaky and broken?" I asked like a professional.
"It can pass for this song."
"Okay, outside. You're having that smoke."
"What?! Don't tell me you're encouraging her to smoke?!" Ashley shrieked.
"Remember how good 'Done For You' sounded when Andy did it? Completely raw and personal. Isn't that what's Riley's album is about?" I contradicted.
Ashley sighed and hung his head in defeat.
Riley smiled and grabbed all the stuff.

I helped them finish up the track and Riley actually seemed happy with it.
"Thank you for helping Jake. I don't know how I'm going to finish this album otherwise."
"It's just a bit of know how" I shrugged. "How have you been feeling?" I asked.
Riley's faced dropped. "Fine" she shot and started to walk over to her car.
Ashley came up beside me and sighed.
"Are you still in the doghouse?" I smirked.
"Nahh, I got brownie points for coming home early from Vegas. It's honestly nothing though, she's fine."
"If you say so. Hey umm, I was thinking I might go up to SF and see Lexa. Do you think everyone will wanna come?"
"Oh sure! That would awesome! Party in San Fran!"
