“This is so awesome.” She said with her arm around my ribcage awkwardly. At first she squeezed my ribcage too hard out of nervousness, her face flushed red trying to hide that she was staring at me through her peripheral vision. She wasn’t the first fan I’d taken a photo with after a show, but to her this was all new. I knew what she was thinking, that I had a million dollars in the bank, lived in a mansion and had a steady stream of royalties forever topping up my account funding my adventures around the world. As Ashley aimed her phone at us, waiting for the moment that she let go of her fear and became present in the moment if that was possible, I smirked at him and waited in silence.
“Thank you for meeting me.” She said, her hand loosening its death grip and sliding ever so slightly down my side to rest on my waist. Her nervous chagrin turned to a brief smirk and stopped.
“No worries.” I smiled genuinely to put her at ease.
“You guys are like, my favorite band ever.” She smiled again, her hand squeezing my side again. And just like that, her nervousness returned.
The thing is we weren’t her favorite band ever. Your first musical experiences shape what you like or don’t like and you build upon that for the rest of your life. But even the first songs you hear are based upon another song that existed before that. Sometimes I hear people saying our band copies another band’s guitar riff, but that band copied it from another band who borrowed at least a few notes from something their mind stowed away out of another classic song before that. I’m lucky enough to see that in the brotherhood of music we’re happy to see others make it, sad to see when some don’t but also understand that regardless of who achieves what we’re all fundamentally keeping the music of our genre alive. But that isn’t the mindset that sells records.
“Thanks!” I said proudly. “I’m honored to hear that.”
Ashley snapped the picture and gave the phone back.
