“AH!” I screamed and stood up. Was Jinxx still able to see me? Suddenly I felt a pair of eyes staring at me. I twirled around in cautious circles, trying to spot what I somehow knew was there.

“Ceese don’t move.” Jinxx warned sharply.

I crouched to the ground, one hand grabbing a fistful of dirt and the other in the air as though telling whatever was about to appear to me to refrain. I closed my eyes and tried again to use all of my senses to no avail.

“CC.” Ashley said quietly as though he were standing next to me.

I opened my eyes expecting to see him standing next to me but nobody was there. I was alone.

“Jinxx? Can you see a wolf?” I shouted to the ground, breathing heavily. Something was making my heart race and my skin flush red.

Jinxx didn’t answer. Soon I felt like I’d waited for hours in that exact spot observing everything around me until finally I decided I couldn’t wait anymore. I stood up and left, shaking my head and walking into the long clear path between the trees. As I walked I tested my phone but nothing happened. It seemed like the more I reached out, the less response I got.

Eventually I grew tired of walking and sat down with my back to a tree. I rested my arms on my knees and sighed as my eyes forced shut.

“CC.” Ashley said.

My eyes shot open to see him crouched in front of me. “You’re not a wolf!” I shouted, springing forward to throw my arm around his neck.

“What the hell?” He replied, his voice muffled by my collarbone. “Who said I was a wolf?” He laughed.

“Jake and Jinxx.” I pointed back to the path I’d walked along.

He ruffled his fingers through my hair and sat back. “You look like you’re on an adventure.”

“Yes!” I yelled excitedly. “But you’re here now!”

His face became serious. “Don’t give up.” He took his bandana from the back belt loop hook of his jeans and tied it around my wrist.

“You can’t leave.” I pleaded.

“Don’t ever give up.” He said reassuringly.

“Why do I feel like you’re saying goodbye?” I said, feeling the blood rush to my face. “Why does everybody leave?” I couldn’t tell if I was about to scream or cry.

“You’ll be okay.” He placed a hand on my shoulder and ran it briskly down my arm to my elbow.

“You can’t leave.” I said quietly.

He pulled my ankle from underneath my arms and caused me to stumble sideways clumsily. “What are you doing?” I looked into his eyes.

“Go to sleep.” He whispered.

“But I’m on an adventure.” I resisted, lying on my side.

“Shhh.” He shushed. Still crouched next to me with an arm on my elbow, we looked into each other’s eyes.

He began to move closer, slowly bending down toward me on the ground.

My head, resting on the muscle of my right arm lifted slowly toward him. My heart started racing again, my blood rushing back to my mouth as I bit down hard on the corner of my lip. I swallowed nervously and I’m pretty sure he could’ve heard that.

With his face this close to mine, I broke eye contact and closed my eyes as I held my breath and waited for what I never expected to happen between us. My teeth let go of the corner of my lip and I pursed my mouth for a moment, exhaling.

When a loud breath groaned near my ear and a hot tongue dragged up my cheek I gasped, shivers crawling down my spine.
