The huge dark, unblinking pupils released mine from their death grip and I was able to coax my body just enough to scurry out from underneath it. When I turned around I saw the shadow run toward the cutline, leaving Jake standing with his arms raised high in the air above his head like some kind of guitar God turned bear impersonator.

“What the hell was that thing?” I shouted.

“That wasn’t my Cerberus.” Jinxx said flatly.

I noticed Jake’s jaw clench.

“What was it?” I repeated, more to myself than anyone else. I knew those eyes but I couldn’t quite place them. I started thinking of every pair of eyes I’d ever seen, trying to match them up when Jake punched my shoulder gently.

“Hey.” He said lightly.

I shook my head and snapped out of it.

“I think you’re bleeding.” He pointed to my arm.

I stepped away from him and looked myself over. There were scratches on the back of my arms from falling or crawling away, but the worst pain came when I tried to walk. There was a large gash across my thigh and up to my lower back.

“Did that thing attack my ass?” I laughed despite myself.

“Dude, I’m tweeting that you got attacked by a cougar.” Jake laughed.

My phone still wasn’t working but I tweeted anyway, ‘I have a cat scratch on my butt cheek, and it is proving to be very irritating. Don’t even ask, it was a wild New Year’s Eve.’
