Between The Roses

Sometimes It Ends

While the sun shone and warmed the spirits of those outside, the spirits of those inside the house were quite the opposite. Across the table from me sat Lake, Callum’s girlfriend. The two of us had begun talking over the last week and we both found out we were similar and decided to be friends, as if that was just a decision to be made. Along with talking to her about random topics, I also told her about Callum keeping Zara’s secret for over a year and she immediately jumped in her car and drove over.

“I just, why would he keep that a secret? That does not sound like the Callum I know,” she said and I shrugged.

“It beats me. I’ve known both Cal and Zara for like four years and never have they kept a secret like that from me,” I sighed and she looked at me.

“Did he tell you why he kept the secret?” She asked and I looked at her in the eyes. Her orange hair was pulled up into a messy bun and her face was vacant of all makeup.

“The only thing he said was that while me and Andy were in our newlywed bubble, him and Zara got close,” I leaned back in my chair and she nodded.

“He’s been spending a lot of time away from home, do you have any idea where he could be?” She asked.

“Maybe visiting Zara,” I said and she sighed as she leaned back and crossed her arms over her chest.

“How are you handling the news of the secret?” She asked me and I shrugged my shoulders as I crossed my legs.

“I just keeping thinking that I can’t be in a band with people who lie to me, especially about something that big,” I told her and she nodded.

“Are you going to talk to the label?” She asked.

“I think I want to talk to Cal and Zara first, tell them where I stand,” I said and she nodded again.

“What does Andy think?” She asked. Just as she finished her sentence, Andy walked into the room with Crow in his arms.

“What do I think about what?” He asked.

“Cal and Zara’s lie,” I said and he groaned.

“I think they are dumb and shouldn’t have kept that from anyone. I also don’t blame Sadee for wanting to possibly part ways with them,” he said as he set Crow down and then went into the kitchen.

“You are thinking about parting ways with them?” Lake asked. I nodded and looked at my hands.

“I am. With me being pregnant and my life maturing so fast, having that shit in my life just isn’t what I need. And I don’t plan on stopping making music once this kid is born. I don’t want people like that around my child, so,” I explained and she nodded.

“I can talk to Callum tonight if you’d like,” she offered and I smiled.

“If you want. Since Matt was fired as our touring manager, I think we should have a band meeting anyways. Talk about the future of the band, finding a new tour manager, etc.,” I said and she nodded.

“When do you think you’ll do that?” She asked.

“Probably like tomorrow,” I said and she nodded.

“Okay. I’ll talk to Cal, try to get the real reason for lying out of him and get back to you, okay?” She asked as she stood.

“Sounds like a plan Stan,” I chuckled as I stood and followed her to the door. She quickly gave me a hug and we said our goodbyes before she left and I closed the door. As I turned back towards the kitchen, Andy was walking out and he noticed how tired I looked.

“Are you feeling okay Sadee?” He asked.

“I’m just perpetually tired is all. What’re you making me for food?” I asked.

“You? I’m making me some Hot Pockets, I don’t know about you,” he joked as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders and pulled me into his chest. I loosely wrapped my arms around his waist and sighed in contentment.

“Do you think you’ll part ways with Cal and Zara?” He asked.

“As much as I don’t, I think I will. I’m gonna talk to Brett first of course, but. They lied to me for a year about Zara’s drug problem. Who knows what else they’ve been hiding,” I shrugged and he rubbed my back.

“Let me know if you want me to go with to your band meeting,” he said as he let go of me, kissed the top of my head, and walked back into the kitchen. I followed behind him and walked to the pantry to see what kind of food we had.

The Next Day
-------------------

The cafe was bustling with people coming and going during the lunch rush. I leaned back in my chair at the table, waiting for Callum and Zara, accompanied by Cole, to come. Brett was sitting next to me, mindlessly stirring his drink with the straw.

“Do you think parting ways is the right thing to do?” I asked him again suddenly and he turned to face me, one eyebrow lifted.

“They lied to everyone for a year. Zara’s in rehab and Callum’s being an ass, I think it is,” he agreed with me and I nodded.

“Okay,” I said and he chuckled.

“You’re nervous. I get it. But I’m on your side,” he side hugged me and I chuckled. The bell to the door opened and in walked both Callum and Zara, with Cole. The three walked to the table and each took their seats.

“Wow, I haven’t been here in forever,” Zara looked around and then at me and Brett.

“Why such a short notice band meeting?” Callum was direct and blunt.

“We have a few things to talk about Callum,” Brett sounded defensive.

“Okay, hurry up. Graham has a soccer game in like an hour that I would like to go to,” he said.

“One, stop being such an ass Callum, and two, both me and Brett have come to an agreement for the future of the band,” I started and Zara furrowed her eyebrows.

“You and Brett came to an agreement, without Cal or I?” She asked.

“Both of us decided that based on the fact that the two of you lied to our faces for a year about your drug problem Zara, and you’re both obviously not as into making the music anymore, we think it’s best if we part ways with the two of you,” I said and immediately I felt a weight lift off my chest but at the same time a new one landed once I saw Zara’s face.

“What? I’m in rehab to get better to stop the drug problem. How is that not being into making the music?” She asked.

“Zara, you’ve been erratic and rude to people while on tour and while in the studio. You lied to both of us for a year about the drugs but probably other things as well. We just don’t think that’s what we want for the band anymore,” Brett said and I clenched my jaw. Callum sat in his seat silently, not looking at anyone but instead at his hands.

“Falling For Fatality is my life guys. I was that way because I was high all the time. I’m not like that anymore, please,” she was beginning to tear up. I shifted in my seat and looked at my hands to keep from crying myself. Andy was at home working on some songs with Jake and CC and I wished he was here with me.

“We can’t Zara, sorry. We found another drummer to take your place and we like him. We just need to find a guitarist,” Brett told her and Zara looked at me.

“Sadee? What about us being best friends? Doesn’t that mean anything? You wouldn’t do this to your best friend would you?” She asked.

“My best friend didn’t do drugs Zara. You aren’t my best friend anymore,” I told her and felt the tears fall down my face. It tore me apart to say that to her.

“Whatever, I didn’t want to be in a band with you guys anyways. Take me back Cole,” she said and stood. I watched her walk away and then turned my eyes to Callum.

“Cal?” I asked.

“Graham has a soccer match in an hour. I’ve gotta go,” he said as he stood and left the cafe. As I sat there next to Brett, I realized that I just lost my two best friends. A wave of tears washed over my and I stood from my seat.

“Sadee? Where’re you going? Aidden was going to meet us here in like fifteen minutes,” Brett asked.

“I’m going to go to the bathroom, I’ll be right back,” I told him and then made my way to the bathroom. Thank God that it was a single person bathroom. I locked the door and then looked in the mirror. Tears were streaming down my face as I stood there. My jaw quivered and I pulled my phone from my pocket and quickly dialed Andy’s number.

“Hey, how’s it going?” He asked.

“Andy, I, lost my best friends,” I cried and heard him walk away from wherever he was to a quieter place.

“Sadee, they were making you unhappy,” he told me and I sniffled.

“I know, but, I was friends with them for four or five years Andy. They were my best friends and bandmates. We went through so much together and now I just lost them,” I told him through my tears.

“I know. Do you want me to come down there?” He asked.

“Please. Brett and me are meeting with Aidden but I don’t know if I can talk to him,” I said and heard Andy grabbing his keys and saying something to Jake and CC.

“You’ll be able to talk to him. Me, Jake, and CC are going to come down there to help you guys, okay?” He asked.

“Yeah,” I said quietly as my tears stopped.

“We’re on the way. I love you,” he said and I cleared my throat.

“I love you too,” I said back and then hung up. I never thought I’d have to do that to them in my life. When we started the band I thought we’d be able to make it for years and years, gain fame and take on the world. But somewhere along the way, something when wrong. I guess, sometimes it ends, the things you want to last forever, they just, end.
