I heard someone speaking, possibly yelling.

I had to focus on the stars and snap out of it. I started feeling lightheaded but at least I felt something. I could feel my hands on the ground. I could hear people speaking, looking at me. My vision returned and I found myself glaring into the sky. A bolt of energy sprang from somewhere deep within me, shot up through my body and into my windpipe, emerging as a loud guttural scream into the night air.

“Give him space.” Ashley’s voice echoed, his voice sounded like it was a million miles away. Where was I?

My hands ran along the pavement, the cool rocks against my skin confusing my brain as the hot air from the fire on the other side of the giant wall rushed at me like a wave of heat.

I looked up at Jake in panic. He stood next to Andy, staring with concern.

“Come on.” Jinxx said next to me. He threw my right arm around his shoulder and lifted me to my feet, bracing my shoulder against his side. “Ceese.” He said quietly.

I looked at him, my eyes wide with confusion.

“We made it out.” He said.

“He’s in shock.” Ashley threw my left arm around his shoulder and the two of them held me up. I couldn’t really feel my legs.

I stared at the wall in horror, forcing my eyes closed.

“Let’s get the fuck out of here.” Andy announced, walking away from the wall. Jake followed him.

“Baby steps.” Jinxx laughed. “One foot in front of the other. Watch mine.”

I literally watched Jinxx walking and willed my legs to do the same.

“You got this.” Ashley said.

When we got about two blocks away from the hotel, I leaned against a dark beige building.

“We’re free.” I said, looking at Ashley.

“I seriously didn’t think you’d make it back there.” Andy shook his head.

“What do we do now?” I sighed.

“Guys look.” Jinxx pointed to the sky. Far in the distance you could see the edges of the sky turning shades of orange, purple and pink.

I felt like I hadn’t seen the sun rise in a week. I’d felt like it would never happen again.
