One Of The Guys

The Audition

"And news just in, Famous rock band Black Veil Brides has unfortunately lost one of its members. Rhythm guitarist Jeremy Ferguson also know as 'Jinxx' was found last night in his down town apartment. Police are treating his death as suspicious. Law enforcement still has no leads.”
I nearly dropped the cup of tea I was holding. I stared in shock at the TV while pictures of my favourite band flitted across the screen.
Dead. Jinxx? It couldn't be true
More pictures of Jinxx's apartment flashed across the screen. Police tape surrounded the building. My ears started ringing. It felt as if I had been told a member of my own family had died. Staring blankly at the ground I tried to make sense of it all.
My stomach flipped. It felt as if someone had stuck a dagger through my heart. The room span and my vision started to blur. I couldn't help but sit at my kitchen table and sob. The tears flew freely from my face onto the wooden table.

Two weeks came and went. Each day as boring as the last. I'd wake up late, watch Netflix, scroll through various social media sites and eat endless tubs of Ben & Jerry's. I watched the news every night for more information about Jinxx's death, but the world seemed to have forgotten about him already. It saddened me that someone who can have such a huge impact on my life can be forgotten about so quickly.
I was mindlessly scrolling through Twitter when I saw it. The tweet that would change my life forever; "@andybvb: Following that tragic death of Jinxx, we will be holding open auditions to replace him today at the Gate Theatre from 4pm - 9pm". With a sprint faster than Usain Bolt, I grabbed my guitar and practically flew to my car. With several broken red lights and no attention paid to speed limits, I reached my destination.
It's really happening, I was going to be a part of Black Veil Brides.
The building was like a maze, with two winding sets of stairs and mirrors in every direction, making it seem as if it went on forever. I was thankful for them though, as they gave me a chance to make myself presentable. My [hair colour] hair was sticking out in every direction. It has a tendency to not know whether it wanted to be wavy or straight. I was still wearing last night's make-up, my eyeliner had smudged so much I looked like a sad panda, my [eye colour] eyes barely visible. I sighed, hoping that the band were looking for pure talent and weren’t materialistic.
Finally, I found myself outside the door of the audition room. I could hear the sweet voices of my heroes. Jake, the lead guitarist, down to earth and kind, with an interest in health and fitness. Ashley, the bassist, the fashionable, wild, party animal. CC, the drummer, the joker of the group who loved playing tricks on stage. And last but not least, Andy. Oh Andy. The lead singer. There are many ways in which one can describe Andy. My favourite one being, fucking hot.
I was so preoccupied drooling over Andy I almost didn't hear my name being called. This was it, my time to shine. My heart jumped into my mouth and my palms were sweaty.
I opened the door.

Inside the audition room the band members were looking tired and bored after sitting through so many auditions before me. Words cannot describe what it feels like to meet your idols. They were less than eight feet away from me. All looking like Gods. Of course I loved them all equally, but right now I had tunnel vision for Andy.
His long black hair contrasted starkly with his pale skin. His left arm was covered from top to bottom with tattoos, ending with a feather rising from his shoulder to his neck. His perfectly chiselled cheekbones and jaw made him look like an ancient sculpture. His right nostril was pierced, as well as the left side of his bottom lips. He rarely smiled but when he did, he had teeth that could blind you.
And those eyes. My GOD those eyes...
Piercing blue, surrounded by smudged black eyeliner. Like two blue zircons. Looking at those eyes made my legs tremble and gave me butterflies in places I never knew I could get butterflies, if you know what I mean.
Speaking of those eyes, they never once looked up from the game of Angry Birds he was playing. He was the first one to speak.
"Say your name then play of whatever"
He continued playing his game, while the others doodled on paper, fell asleep and stared off into space.
I can't believe this is happening! My one chance to be in my favourite band and they won't even give me the courtesy of looking up.
"[Name]" I said.
Still no eyes on me. Hands shaking, I took a deep breath and began to play their most famous song "Knives and Pens". I was hardly twenty seconds into the song before they were having a full blown conversation with each other. I was angry now. All my life I've been waiting for a chance like this and they'd rather discuss the weather. No, not in front of me.
There was a jug of water on the table next to me. Studded heels clicking on the hard floor I casually strolled over to it, and tipped it onto the floor. As the delicate glass shattered into thousands of tiny daggers it made an almighty crash. The four heads popped up and finally acknowledged me.
"I don't know if you guys noticed or not, but there's someone trying to audition for your band here. It would be common courtesy to give a shit, would it not?” Forget my heart in my throat, my heart was on the fucking floor!
Did I really just say that?
I was absolutely terrified, but I wouldn't let them see that. They all looked completely shocked as if no one had ever spoken to them like that before. It was only at that moment that the band realized I was a girl. Andy spoke.
"Now sweet cheeks, if you think coming in here and throwing a tantrum will get you a place in the band, then think again. This ain't no place for girls, especially ones with PMS."
"I don't have PMS" I argued. "What I have is talent. Talent you need to keep making records and selling out tours". I had no idea where all this courage was coming from but I liked it. I could see that Andy was not impressed, he didn't like being talked down by anyone, especially a girl.
"Okay then, show me", he challenged. "And none of our songs, I'm sick of hearing them from every Tom, Dick and Larry that auditioned today. Prove to us that you're worthy of a place in Black Veil Brides". He wanted a show and he would get one. I played Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid'. This time they all paid attention. Not one eye strayed from me, and they were impressed. Ashley, Jake and CC's jaws all dropped. Andy's lips pursed together in a tight line like a child who didn't get what he wanted. When I finished my astounding performance I bowed sarcastically and headed towards the door. The last thing I heard was CC screaming after me "We'll be in touch!"

As soon as the door closed I ran for the bathroom. I couldn't believe what had just happened. I probably just ruined my chances of ever being in my favourite band.
God, I am so stupid!
I looked at myself in the mirror in awe of what I did. When suddenly, the door opened and in walked Andy. He locked the door without taking his eyes off me and said "Well, haven't you been a very bad girl"

Notes
