Blood Queen

There is only silence as I collapse onto one of the chairs and bury my face in my hands, ashamed of what I am and what I’ve done. When the earth was given its first life 3.5 billion years ago, there were no vampires. When humans evolved and began to build tools and speak in primitive languages, there were none of us. We are unnatural and unwelcome beasts preying upon innocent people. How could a girl who’s been brought up among humans her entire life ever forgive me? How can I ever forgive myself?

“I’m sorry.” I feel a small hand on my shoulder.

“Why are you apologizing? You aren’t the one hunting mortals.” My voice is muffled slightly by my palms.

“You didn’t kill anyone did you? Or turn them into a vampire?” She says it like a rhetorical question, but I still feel compelled to answer.

“No, never. But that doesn’t make me innocent. I’m still a monster.”

“Don’t call yourself that, you’re not a monster. Yes, you’ve will had to make some tough choices and do some things that maybe you aren’t proud of. But so has everyone. That doesn’t make you a monster.”

“Iris, I’m literally taking someone’s blood. I don’t think there’s a way to justify that.”

“Andy, that doesn’t make you a monster. Look, you saved my life. And you’ve helped thousands of people save their own. A little blood here or there doesn’t change any of that.” I glance at her from between my fingers. She’s so kind. Even though she knows what I am she doesn’t hate me. At this moment I fall in love with her a little more. Even though I know she could only ever feel the same in some alternate reality. And that hurts.

Okay, so I screwed up a bit on the research for my last chapter. Shoutout to @anathema for pointing out that sevoflurane should be used similarly to chloroform (rag held over mouth and nose) because it could kill someone if injected... oops. :) I saw that it was sold in liquid form and just kind of assumed that it could be injected. This is a classic example of why I should not write chapters late at night. :)

Besides that, I really hope you guys are enjoying the story. A longer chapter in Iris' point of view is coming soon. :)

P.S. You know how some people get caught cheating by calling their spouse the wrong name? I never understood that until now. I almost typed "Raven" instead of "Iris" like, six times before I decided it might just be best to avoid using names until I can clear my head a bit. :)
