Blood Queen

sevoflurane

(Andy’s POV)

I wake up completely refreshed at around 8:30, despite getting to sleep later than 4:00 am. The second my eyes open they land on Iris. Sunlight streams from the window illuminating her face in a heavenly glow. She looks like an angel. Which of course is exactly why she could never feel the same about me. I’m no angel. I’m a monster. I suppose I don’t kill people like most vampires, but I still attack them. I still drink their blood. I still befriend them knowing that I will have to watch them go through their natural life spans and die, knowing that I won’t follow them.

As much as I don’t want to, I lift my arm from her sleeping form and quietly slip out from under the covers. I can’t resist brushing a lock of hair from her face with my fingertips before I leave the room, knowing she needs sleep far more than I do. I need to feed. Hunger is not a good thing around mortals, or half-mortals for that matter, the last thing I would ever want is to accidentally lose control and hurt her.

There are usually people hiking alone on the wooded trails; So I head east down Tamara street and slip into the woods, making sure that nobody sees me. I’ve only been prowling around for about twenty minutes before I hear someone crashing through the tree branches on a small secondary path. I slide a narrow syringe from my pocket. It is filled with sevoflurane, a potent sleeping agent. It seems weird that a vampire would use a knockout drug, but the alternative is to hit them really hard in the head and that can cause brain damage and memory loss, not to mention a giant bump. At least with the sevoflurane there are no harmful effects other than slight disorientation for a few minutes after waking up.
I crouch behind a tree and wait. In a few minutes the jogger comes running around the bend. He looks to be in his early twenties, healthy enough where losing blood won’t be a serious problem. My entire body tenses up as I let my consciousness be temporarily submerged by wild instinct. As soon as he has run past my tree, my body moves of it’s own accord. Jumping out from my hiding place and grabbing him in a chokehold. My hands jam the needle into his neck. Within a few seconds he is unconcious. Then, I bite.

This is the hardest part. Trying to control the thirst, stopping myself from taking too much. Once a vampire has started drinking, it’s extremely difficult to stop. I shove myself away from the man and slump against the bark of an oak tree. This is wrong. This is so wrong. Who am I to decide that I have a right to someone else’s blood? It doesn’t matter how many times I have to do this, it never gets any easier. I don’t think it ever will.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After I heal his bite and wipe the events from his mind, I head back to the apartment, taking the long way so I can pick up some groceries and coffee. Iris will probably be awake soon and I want to make sure she has something to eat before we decide on our next course of action.

I unlock the door as quietly as I can and open it very slowly to avoid any creaks but as soon as I slip inside I see that she is already awake. Sitting up in bed and rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

“Where did you go?” Her voice is quiet and clear. I set the grocery bags and coffee down on the table. There’s no point in avoiding the question. I’m a vampire, she knows that. A resigned sigh escapes my lips.

“Hunting.” I answer, staring down at the floor. Whatever our relationship was, she won’t want any part of it now. She’s almost certainly disgusted by me. I know I would have been when I was human.

Notes

Wow... the guilt seems to be hitting Andy hard. I wonder if Iris will be able to help him? There are probably going to be a lot of cute fluffy Andy/Iris chapters coming up because I love writing them. The next chapter is going to be very important in terms of information. I love all the amazing comments you guys have been writing. :) Reading those simply make my day.

P.S. If you want to read a really well-written fanfiction, check out "Falling" by @DeathIsBeauty. I was really impressed by her style. :) Until next chapter,
