Blood Queen

A tall girl with a wild-eyed look and broken-off coke bottle is standing next to my closet door. That’s a new one for me. Her hair is fiery red and pulled back into a messy ponytail. The blue hoodie she wears appears several sizes too large and is torn in as many places. My first instinct is to scream, but I think better of it. A scream would disrupt my father’s party, and I’m safer with a madwoman than I am with his friends.

“What the hell?!?” I stage-whisper, too surprised to be seriously afraid. Besides, she looks so terrified it would be difficult to fear her. She stumbles a few steps backwards and the bottle slips from her shaking fingers, cracking into pieces on the bare floorboards.

“I’m- I’m so sorry! I-” She wails in a voice broken up by panicked breaths. “There were these guys chasing me! And I- I climbed the trellis outside to get away! I’m so sorry, please don’t call the cops!” I struggle for a moment to make sense of her words.

“Okay, okay.” I say in what, I hope, is a reassuring tone. “Just- calm down, alright? You’re safe.” She looks utterly unconvinced. And then she looks petrified, eyes widening at a point behind me. The back of my neck prickles and I spin around, almost taking out Andy’s straight nose with an instinctive punch. His stony glare is fixed on the redheaded girl.

“What are you doing here?” He growls. She squeaks in terror and he makes to step towards her menacingly, but I place a hand on his chest to stop him.

“Andy. It’s okay. She just needed a place to hide. There were guys chasing her.” He pauses, peering at her closely and noting the glass on the floor and the perspiration on her face. Her shortness of breath.

“Oh.” He says in his normal voice, shifting his weight onto his back leg in a less aggressive stance. “Are you okay?” I am amazed at how quickly he goes from scary to caring in so few seconds. She nods, and takes a deep, calming breath.

“I was just trying to get my dad. He has health issues, and he’s not supposed to drink. But I’m no good with directions and I guess I wandered down the wrong street or something. And… Well, I just want to go get my dad and go home.”

“What’s your name?” I ask her.

“Abigail.”

“Okay Abigail. I know you want to get your dad, but trust me; You do not want to walk down there right now.” She scrutinizes me, doubtless gauging how serious I am, and when she sees the bruises on my arms and the badly concealed cut on my forehead her lips tighten into a thin line.

“Okay.”

Okay. So, I went back and read some of the first chapters of this story. And, oh my god, I hate myself right now. I made Andy's character into a complete sap, and there are so many cringey typos. I have spell check. There is NO excuse. So I just want to apologize for 3:00 a.m. emo sophomore me. And for ending so many sentences with prepositions. And for not updating in a bazillion years.... Wow. I'm really batting 500 today. :) Anyways, I'm trying to improve my writing, but I already started this story off with a cheesy character, so I can't just get rid of it entirely. But I will definitely be toning it down because if I don't I will go out of my gourd. I hope that, despite the cringiness, this story can still bring a smile to your face, even if you're laughing at me. :) As for today's question... (drumroll please) If you had to be stuck on a deserted island with Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian, or that one guy who sings in One Direction, who would be the first to get eaten by wild animals and why? :)
