Chapter 32

Jinxx’s POV
“Dude, are you mute?” The guy sitting on the other bed said to me. I glanced over at him for a moment and almost said something, then didn’t. I’d been there for about three days and I hadn’t spoken a word to anyone but Mr. Reciffo. The other guy was my cell mate. He was nice enough, in on drug possession charges. His name was Ricardo and he talked to me because I listened. I was going to let him just keep assuming that I was mute. I looked at him for a moment then leaned back and continued to stare at the bunk above me. My philosophy while I was in jail was basically to be invisible. That was pretty much how I did things in my daily life anyway, so it wasn’t hard for me. Ricardo made it hard though, he was nice and asked a lot of questions. It would have been nice to vent to him. He sighed and rubbed his tattooed hands together.
“Do you speak english?,” He bribed, “Te hablas ingles?” I felt the corners of my lips curl up. Into a smile.
“Dude, Ricardo stop trying to talk to him, he keeps to himself, let him be,” A voice came from the bunk above me. That was Lance, he was in for drug charges as well. Again, a pretty nice guy, sort of a class clown sort fellow.
“Nah dude, I think he speaks Spanish, he smiled when I talked to him in Spanish,” Ricardo said. I felt my teeth starting to show as a grin appeared on my face. Lance appeared over the bunk with his red wispy beard and crooked toothed grin. I almost laughed. They were so entertained by me reacting to anything.
“Why look at that, the boy does have facial muscles. The cat just caught his tongue,” Lance grinned. I raised my eyebrows at him. Suddenly a guard appeared at our cell door. He stuck his keys in the lock.
“What’s this all about, we’re not supposed to be out right now?” Ricardo said. I sat up on the bed.
“All of you stay where you are except Jeremy. I need you on your feet face the back wall and put your hands on the back of your head,” He said. “As long as the rest of you stay right where you are we won’t have any problems,” Ricardo and Lance looked at each other then back at me.
“Uh, why?” I asked. Lance and Ricardo looked at each other again.
“Holy God, he can talk,” Lance exclaimed.
“Of course he can talk. Jeremy I’m taking you to a different cell, now do as I told you” The guard said. I scowled at the use of my real name then rolled out of bed. I turned and faced the back wall and put my hands on my head. Just like I had been ordered to do. I heard the cell door open. Lance and Ricardo stayed put in their bunks. It was terrible procedure, but no one in the cell had ever been remotely violent, so I guessed they figured it was okay. The guard took my hands and cuffed them behind my back. Then he turned me out of the cell.
“Good luck, dude,” Ricardo said.
“Bye guys,” I said and I heard them start to exclaim more, they were so excited by my ability to speak. The guard lead me down rows of cells where other inmates jeered and shouted as we passed. To my surprise he took me out of the cell block and into the office area of the jail. There was a room that looked like a small conference room. He pushed me through the door and into that room. There was a table surrounded by chairs. Another officer stood in the corner with her hands folded in front of her.
“This is the guy?” She said, raising her eyebrows.
“Yes ma’am, don’t worry about him. He’s just going to sit in this room for a little while. Don’t worry he hasn’t been a lick of trouble. His name’s Jeremy and he may be the most docile prisoner I have ever met,” The guard leading me announced. “So I’m going to sit him down and take his cuffs off, and he’s going to sit here and be good, until we’re ready for him. Right Jeremy?”
“I’ll be good, please call me Jinxx,” I said.
“Whatever you want. This is Officer Lakely, she’s going to keep an eye on you while I’m gone. You cause her any trouble and you will be back in shackles, got it?” The guard said.
“Yessir,” I replied. The guard lead me to one of the chairs. A spinning chair, and took off my cuffs.
“Why exactly am I in here?” I asked. The guard grinned.
“I actually don’t know. Mr. Reciffo said that he had a nice surprise for you that will be showing up around 2:00 in this room. He told me to put you in here and be nice,” The guard said as he shrugged. I looked at the clock. It was 1:50. I felt a little bubble of anxiety settle in my stomach. I had ten minutes to work out what my surprise might be. Ten minutes to leap to the worst conclusions.
Ashley’s POV
I was being transferred to a new prison. I didn’t know why. They wouldn’t tell me why. I was sitting in the window seat of a prison bus. The guy next to me was so burly that he took up half the space in my seat with his right bicep. For the first time in a long time I was glad that I was skinny enough to be counted as half a person. I leaned against the window, through the dirty glass I watched a suburban city roll by. I could feel cold radiating through the window, but it wasn’t as cold as it had been for the past few days. I reste my head on the glass and watched my breath for a cloud on the window. We turned onto a road that was more wooded and a guessed that we were getting closer to the jail. I felt like a rock was sitting in my stomach.
I wanted out. Out of jail, out of the bus with the massive bicep guy, out of the entire situation. I wanted to go back to the cabin in the woods and stay there for a long time. I sighed and shifted in my seat, accidently bumping Bicep Guy. He turned his bald head towards me and glanced me up and down. I was a head and a half shorter than him and probably weighed about half what he did.
“Sorry,” I said. He looked me up and down again.
“You look like a girl,” He grunted.
“I know,” I said. He nodded and turned back to the front. We slowed to stop and I looked out the window and saw that we were getting security checked at the gate. A guard wearing a different uniform than the one I was used to stepped onto the bus and looked around. He nodded at the driver and the doors closed and we continued down a path to a jail that looked more like a castle than a jail. We got close to the front and the new guard stood up.
“Alright listen up. Not all of you are getting off here, I’m going to call your names. If I say your name you’re going to stand up, walk to the front of the bus, and go outside to be processed to get into your new home,” The guard said. Then he picked up a clipboard and started calling names. One by one people around me stood up and walked off the bus. They were taken in groups into the prison. Eventually Bicep Guy got up from next to me and went inside. I sat up and looked around, I was the only one left. I looked back a guard with the clipboard.
“Hold your horses, buddy. You won’t be the only one for long,” He said. I sat back in my seat twiddling my thumbs nervously. I heard someone mount the steps of the bus and I made a point of averting my eyes. If more people got on the bus maybe they wouldn’t sit next to me if I didn’t make eye contact. I heard the rattling of chains.
“Ashley, thank god!” I heard a familiar voice say. I looked up, Jake was standing at the front of the bus being patted down. Relief hit me like a ton of bricks.
“Dude are you okay?” I asked. He shook his head.
“As good as you can be when you’ve been in prison and the due process of the law has been totally ignored,” He said.
“Same,” I said.
“Quit your whining. If the law worked at all you both would’ve been executed already. I’ve been told to treat you to well, and that you won’t cause any sort of trouble,” The guard said. “You guys are supposed to be treated all special.” He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a key. He took Jake’s cuffs off then walked back to me and took mine off at well. He made sure to add a look of distaste as he pulled my cuffs off. He walked back to the front and got ready to leave. Jake was still standing there looking confused.
“Go on back there and sit with your little boyfriend,” The guard said waving a hand.
“He’s not my boyfriend,” Jake replied. The guard muttered something and left the bus, leaving just me, Jake, the bus driver and two guards from my prison. Jake made his way back to where I was sitting and sat down next to me with a huff of relief. The doors of the bus closed and we started rolling away from the castle.
“Dude what is going on? Are we inmates or not?” Jake asked as he tilted his head back and closed his eyes. I shook my head.
“I have no idea what’s happening,” I exasperated.
“Same, but I will say that i am glad to see that you’re alive and not broken,” Jake said. His eyes still closed.
“Is it weird to say that I missed you?” I said. Jake opened one eye and looked at me, a little smile was on his face.
“No that’s not weird, I missed you too,”

Notes

Just a little glimpse of what's going on with the other guys. For the record I have no idea how jail works, this is just my best guess. I hope you all enjoyed and I'll see you next week.
