Sons of Night

Chapter 2

Mayden's POV
Then I saw him. A tall figure standing in the darkness, he was turned towards me I could tell, but he stood unmoving and silent just outside my circle of vision. How long had he been there just watching me. I froze, he had seen me obviously, now that I had seen him my luck was all over for sure. He moved first.
I watched his long legs take a step towards the firelight. The snow was still swirling around him and I realized that about a six inches had accumulated. I slid as far away as I could into the cold back of the cave, still keeping my eyes on him. He froze. Another minute of silence passed then he took another step towards me, the bottoms of his legs where in the light. I could see tall black leather boots and black skinny jeans. I could barely see his face, his eyes were locked right on me. He took another three steps and I could see him entirely and I was shocked. He was tall and thin, wearing a black leather jacket with a long sleeve shirt underneath wrapped in a scarf and a hat on his head. He wore fingerless cotton gloves, black just like the rest of his attire. The thing that surprised me the most was his face, as soon as I saw it I was sure that I had died, gone to heaven, and he was an angel. He had pale, flawless, alabaster skin, his dark hair hung out of the hat and curled around his face. His jaw and cheekbones caused accented shadows making his face look angular. His pink and shapely lips where pierced as well as his nose reddened from the cold, I could see a few tattoos coming up from under his scarf. His eyes where the deepest blue I had ever seen and when I met them my heart leaped into my throat and started to pound. He stared at me quietly for a moment while I tried to pick my jaw up off the ground. He didn’t look like a serial killer. There was something oddly familiar about him, like he was someone I knew when I was younger but hadn’t seen in years. He took another step closer to the fire.
“Don’t come near me!” I screamed, but it came out as a harsh whisper.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” He said softly, his voice rumbled up through his chest and came out like a sexy waterfall. My heart jumped to my throat again, he kept eye contact with me as he knelt down next to the fire and stirred the pot.
“Who are you?” I said.
“I’m not who you think I am,” He said softly he reached out into the snow and grabbed his backpack he pulled a little jar of spices and threw a pinch into the fire.
“That doesn’t tell me who you are,”
“If I told you who I was, then you’d be afraid of me, and I don’t want that, but I’m not the killer,” He said stirring the soup again and looking up at me. The soup began to smell even better and my stomach growled again.
“It’ll be ready in a few minutes. I’m glad you woke up too, I didn’t want to eat alone,”
“You say that like you thought I wouldn’t wake up,” I said.
“When I found you here I thought you’d frozen to death, all alone in this weather in nothing but those clothes. I touched you and you were freezing cold, but you still had a pulse, so I wrapped you up to hold in what little heat you had left and started a fire in hopes that you’d pull out of it. You weren’t getting any warmer, so forgive me, but I held you under the blanket for a bit as a last ditch effort to try to save you. When you started to move around a bit I let you go and started cooking because I didn’t want to freak you out. Looks like a freaked you out anyway, so that failed,” He explained and then he looked at me like he was afraid that I was going to try to slap him or something. I was shocked, I didn’t know what to say, I almost believed that he wasn’t the killer. I cautiously scooted back up to the front of the cave, closer to the fire where it was warmer.
“Thank you,” I said, what else was there to say, he’d saved my life.
“You’re welcome,” He said. I watched him putting the finishing touches on the soup, dashes of cheese and different spices and salts. I noticed his hands were trembling, he was shivering in the cold. I was quite warm where I was, out of the wind, all wrapped up in what was probably his blanket, with the cave reflecting the heat back at me.
“Do you want to come in here? It’s pretty warm,” I said, he looked up at me, surprised.
“Are you sure?” He said.
“You saved my life, it’s the least I could do,” I said. He smiled a bit and slid himself around so he was sitting on my left side. He watched the fire silently for a little while before picking up the soup ladle and studying the consistency of the mixture.
“It’s done,” He said after a moment. He reached over and grabbed the bowls, he handed one of them to me. He served me first he, he heaped my bowl and placed a cup of hot chocolate next to me, then he did the same for himself. At first I barely tasted it and it burned my mouth.
“Woah, woah, woah. Take a second and breathe kid, I know you’re hungry, but I don’t want you getting sick on me,” He said, between his own rushed mouthfuls.
“Back at you,” I replied, he smiled and slowed his pace. Once I slowed down too I realized that he was an amazing cook. The soup tasted like home and a warm bed, for a moment I wasn’t afraid. I could feel the strength returning to my bones. Between the two of us we completely cleared the pot and I was stuffed. He took all of our used kitchenware and cleaned it out with some fresh snow that he scooped from just outside the cave. As I watched him pack away all of the things neatly and stack some more sticks on the fire I became increasingly drowsy.
“What time is it?” I said as a yawn split my jaw.
“Pretty well past midnight,” He said, turning to me. I nodded and rubbed my eyes, wondering what he would do next.
“How about we sleep here tonight and we’ll figure out what to do with you in the morning,” He said, seeing that I was nearly asleep in my seat. I rolled back onto the ground and pulled the blanket tighter over myself. His shadow came over and he kneeled next to me again.
“I have this for you if you want it,” He said as he held up a worn pillow, I took it, thinking that he had one for himself too. I was strangely comfortable, and no part of me told me to be afraid of him. I looked to the other side of the cave and saw him as far away from me as he could be reclining against the cave wall, his arms wrapped around himself.
“You don’t have any blankets for yourself?” I asked. He shook his head, no he didn’t. I could feel myself waring. Did I really want to share my blankets with him? Possibly, apparently we’d already done it once while I was unconscious. I couldn’t just sleep knowing that he was sitting up against a cold rock in well below freezing temperatures.
“No, I want you to be comfortable. I don’t think that me being that close to you would make you comfortable,” He said, the noble thing to say of course.
“Come here, it’ll keep us both warmer,” I said. He looked me in the eyes for a long moment before slowly sliding across the floor to me. He slid off his leather jacket revealing the soft fleece underneath, I could see his muscles moving under the shirt. He took off his scarf too, letting me see the artwork on his neck, he pulled the hat down farther over his ears. I lifted up the blanket to allow him to get next to me.
“Are you entirely one hundred percent sure that you’re okay with this,” He said. I nodded. He took a gentle hold of my chin and pulled it up so I was looking into his eyes.
“I’m sure,” I said. He nodded and let go of my chin. I laid my head back down on the pillow and he laid down behind me. I could feel his warm breath on the back of my neck. We were silent for a long time, I thought he was asleep and then his voice came from behind me.
“I know that this is really weird and sudden, but I’ve been alone for a really long time, and would it be okay if I held you?” He said softly, with an edge of an apologetic tone, “I mean, no, nevermind, I’m sorry, forget I said anything,” he finished after I was silent for a moment.
“It’s okay, you can,” I said, to be completely honest I was expecting him to anyway.
“Really?” he asked.
“Yeah, hug away,”
“Thank you,” He said, I could hear the smile in his voice. He gently wrapped an arm around my middle and pulled me closer to his body. I was grateful for the extra warmth. He rested his cheek on the side of my neck and sighed. I got the sense that it was a contented sigh. A few seconds later I could hear his soft snores in my ear. Then after staring into the fire for a few more minutes I slipped away as well.
