Chapter 26

Andy’s POV
“Someone go get the phone book, who knows how long we have,” I demanded. Mom disappeared from the room and was back in a flash. She slammed the book down on the coffee table and started rifling through the names. It wasn’t long before she found him, with her finger on the name she typed the address into her phone. My hands were shaking. I couldn’t believe that this was actually happening. The rest of the guys were sitting around nervously twitching like I was.
“He lives fourteen miles from here,” Mom announced. I sat back and ran my hand through my hair.
“We can’t walk that far,” I groaned.
“My car holds seven people, get in. I’m driving you,” Mom said. I almost laughed. We were about to solve the murder mystery of the century and my mom had to drive us because none of us knew how to drive. At least as far as I knew, none of us knew how to drive. We looked at each other. I could see the amusement on the other guys faces as well.
“Well I don’t really think we have another choice, because I don’t think any of us have driven in at least ten years. Andy not at all,” Jake said slowly.
“Fine,” I said, “But Mom, as soon as we get there I want you to leave and call the police,” She nodded. I took a deep breath.
“Well let’s go! What are we waiting around for?” Ashley said standing up. The rest of us followed his lead. I watched everyone else leave the living room. Unarmed. I considered for a moment. We’d always said our goal was not to kill the killer, but wait for the police after we subdue him. I thought about Mayden, alone with this guy. Being tortured and God knows what, and I reached into my backpack that still laid on the living room floor. I pulled out the hunting knife that I’d had in case I needed to cut ropes. I shoved it (in the sheath of course) into my boot, just in case. I wasn’t going to use it unless I really needed it. If Mayden was dead. I really needed it. I quickly followed after the rest of the guys so they wouldn’t wonder what was taking me so long.
When I got to the car everyone was already piled in. So I ended up taking the last empty seat, in the middle row, against the window. I found myself putting my seatbelt on out of habit. My mom turned and looked back at me.
“Whatever happens, I’m proud of you, Andy,” She said, then she looked around the van, “I’m proud of all of you,” She started the car and we were off down the road. While we drove the only person talking was the GPS. It was totally silent in the car, but the weight of the knife in my boot was heavier than the silence. It made me wonder, did I actually have the guts to kill someone on purpose to save my own life, or the life of someone I loved? When it came to it, I thought that I’d probably be able to do it, not sitting in the car though. Someplace I felt safe, I couldn’t imagine myself taking a life on purpose. The thought made me feel like my soul was a rock in my gut. The closer we got to the house the weaker I felt. I almost wanted to ask to turn around, but I didn’t. I couldn’t. I would let myself be cowardly in my brain, but I would not let the rest of the guys see that I was terrified.
The GPS lead us onto a side road that I’d never seen before. Or maybe I had and I just didn’t remember it. It branched away from the town and led into a darker, less paved, and more tree filled road. We drove straight down the narrowing path and houses became few and far between as we went. There were no street lights. The GPS announced that we had a mile to go before we reached the driveway of the house. Jinxx took the GPS and looked at it.
“I think it would be best if Mrs. Biersack dropped us off at the end of the driveway, so that we can walk up unnoticed and so she can get away and call the police,” Jinxx stated, looking at me. I glanced at the device, the driveway was long and curving into the woods. He was right, it would give us the element of surprise.
“I would have to agree with Jinxx,” I said. My voice came out sounding normal. I expected an uneasy tremble to go with it, or maybe a dry rasp, but it didn’t. I sounded cool and confident. I didn’t know why, I did not feel cool or confident. It was good though, if the leader was calm then the group was calm, that’s how it usually worked. Everyone else was nodding as I looked back at them.
“Mom?” I asked.
“I heard you,” She said, she sounded like she was holding back tears. I refused to let that get to me. I’d be back, I knew I would be. The mechanical voice of the GPS announced that we had reached our destination. The car slowed to a stop in front of a wrought iron gate. I stared up at the dark driveway and took a deep breath. The sliding door of the van felt heavier than it should as I opened it, and my legs were made of lead as my boots hit the ground. That part of me was afraid, but the other part was angry. He had my girl in there, and I had to go get her, to make sure she was safe. I step away from the car, letting Jinxx and CC clamour out on my side while Ash and Jake got out on the other. I walked up to the gate and looked for a lock, there was none. It was unlocked. I was about to push the door open with my leather gloved hand when I stopped. I heard the car door open again.
“Andy,” Mom’s voice said, I turned around letting my hand fall from the gate. The rest of the guys turned with me. Mom was standing outside the car with her arms wrapped around herself, she looked a thousand years older than I’d ever seen her.
“Come here,” She said. I felt like I was walking through molasses as I trudged across the frozen ground to her. I stopped a few feet away.
“Yeah?” I asked, she held out her arms for a hug. I took the hug without thinking. While she hugged me her hand brushed my hair.
“You know I don’t want you to go. I don’t want you to be in danger. You’ve already solved the crime, and I don’t want you to be hurt when your trying to catch this guy,” She said in my ear. I pulled away from the hug.
“Mom, you know I have to do this, for these guys and, well this is personal,” I said. I watched my mom choke back tears and my heart broke.
“I know, I just can’t stand to lose my baby boy again,” She said, and covered her eyes as she started to cry. I hugged her again.
“Mom, I need you to stay strong for me. I need you to get back to where you need to and call the cops. I need you to do that for me,” I said, squeezing her. Then she pushed me away.
“Right, go. Get the job done just be safe,” She said wiping her eyes and climbing back into the car. I turned and faced the guys. Part of me expected them to make fun, but they just looked on solemnly. I heard the car roll away down the road, and I didn’t look back to watch it go. I took a deep breath and let it out.
“Let’s go,”
Mayden’s POV
“Now that you can’t fight me anymore, let’s have some real fun, shall we?” Schrock giggled. The pain was amazing. I could barely comprehend what was happening around me through my blurred vision and ringing ears.
“Let’s think about it. What did that little forest boy really love about you?” He asked looking me up and down, I cringed and my stomach lurched.
“If it was your legs, I’ve already ruined those for him. Maybe it was your pretty, pretty little face, maybe your eyes. Oh I bet if they found the body with those gouged out he’d be heartbroken. Maybe it was your lips? I could cut them off, and knock out the nice teeth too?” Schrock said, slowly like he was telling a child all the different toys he could give it. Suddenly I heard a faint beeping, like an alarm. Schrock looked up, surprised.
“Oh my, that sounds like my perimeter alarm. Someone has come through my front gate. Looks like I’ll have to finish you before we have time to play as much as I’d want to, generally,” He said feigning a sad face. I was praying that it was someone coming to rescue me, and that they got to the basement fast enough. Schrock reached into his back pocket and pulled out a switchblade.
“Don’t worry, darling, we still have enough time for a bit of fun before they get here,” He said, he opened the blade slowly and trailed it from my lips down my jaw and onto my throat smiling as he did so. He didn’t cut, just let the flat of the blade run along my skin. I felt a flock of goosebumps run across my skin, but not the good kind. I cringed and tried to sink farther back into the wall. Then he brought the blade up to my forearm and started cutting. I bit back a cry of pain as he drew a bloody line from my pinky to the point of my elbow. I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of hearing me scream in pain anymore. Suddenly there was a banging from above. Steady and rhythmic like a boot kicking in a door. Schrock glared up towards the ceiling.
“Your boys are moving fast, let’s see what other fun we can have before they get here,” He said, his sick grin returning with a flare of frustration behind it. The rhythmic kicking ended in a crack and I heard boots running around on the floor above, along with shouts that sounded like my name. Schrock grabbed a hold of the bottom of my shirt and ripped it clean in half, I thanked God I was wearing a bra. He started cutting again. Long jagged slices from right under my ribs to the waistband of my jeans. This time I screamed. Not because it hurt, but because I knew the boys could hear me. I screamed around the gag until my throat wouldn’t allow me to scream any louder, and the grin on Schrock’s face grew the louder I screamed.
“That’s right girl, beg for me to stop!” He bellowed, he was still cutting. I didn’t want to look down and see what I knew was there, my internal organ were exposed at that point. I was getting dizzy from the blood loss. Then the sound of my rescue came. I heard the door to the basement open.
“Mayden?” Andy’s voice called down the steps, I screamed again, and Schrock stopped cutting. He stood up straight. Still smiling down at me, I was sobbing, getting dizzier by the second.
“You stupid boy, you think you can save her now! She’ll be dead before you can get her to the hospital!” Schrock yelled. I heard Andy yell something to the rest of the boys then he bounded down the stairs, I’d never been so glad to see anyone’s face in my whole life. Schrock held the bloody knife down by my neck while turning to face Andy.
“You keep your hands off her,” Andy snarled. He bounded across the room and in three massive steps he gave Schrock one massive punch straight to the temple. Schrock stumbled back with his massive girth throwing him off balance and fell into the corner of the room in an unconscious heap. Andy was next to me in a second.
“Oh god, holy shit, shit, shit, shit!” He said when he saw the damage to my torso. He crouched down and pulled the gag away from my mouth.
“I’m gonna get you out of here, don’t worry. You’re safe now,” He said frantically as he got to work trying to get the ties off my hands.
“My legs… my legs are broken,” I gasped to him, the world was getting blurrier and and the edges of my vision started to fade to black.
“No, Mayden stay with me, you’re going to be fine,” He said gently, then he looked over his shoulder, “Guys she’s down here! I need help!” He screamed. I heard the footsteps come down the stairs.
“Andy! Look out!” Ashley yelled from the stairs, but it was too late. A cinder block swung by Schrock smashed the side of Andy’s head. I screamed again, Andy fell, unconscious, at the side of the room with a gash on his head that was losing blood rapidly. The other four guys came running down the stairs Shrock took one look at them, he stood between me and them.
“Leave her alone. It’s over, you can let us detain you, or we’ll force you,” Ashley demanded. Schrock snorted.
“Yeah right,” He said, “Like I’d let you have the satisfaction of turning me in,” He glanced over at Andy. I could see something shiny had come out of Andy’s boot. Schrock reached it before anyone else could and picked it up, it was a long sharp hunting knife. The same one Andy had given me the morning we met so that I’d feel safe with him.
“What are you doing?” Jake said. Schrock laughed, then he held the knife to his own throat. CC lunged and tried to get to him in time, but it was in vain. There was a slicing sound and then the splashes of blood on the concrete. Schrock fell, with blood pooling around him faster than Andy and I combined. Jinxx was on the ground next to him trying to stop the bleeding, but it was too late.
“Dammit, the bastard is dead,” Jinxx spat, then he turned to me and scrambled across the floor, trying right away to get me untied like Andy. Ash was kneeling by Andy’s head, trying to stop that bleeding while CC and Jake came to me to try to help Jinxx. I was sobbing hysterically, as it got darker and darker. Jinxx was talking to me, saying something to calm me down, but it was no use. I was about to slip into unconsciousness when another group of people thundered down the stairs. Police officers with their guns drawn. The were yelling, forcing Jinxx, Jake, CC, and Ashley away from me and Andy and onto the ground. The last thing I saw before the world slipped away was a gun to Ashley’s head as he was being cuffed.
