Chapter 19

Andy’s POV
I felt my stomach drop into my gut. All the things that I had lived through and trying to steal a school schedule was going to be the death of me. The world slowed down and I could see his finger tightening on the trigger. Scrambling and trying to get off the floor so I could run but the slick hardwood wasn’t helping. I fell back onto my ass after my gloved hand slipped out from under me. I squeezed my eyes shut, within a few seconds my brain was going to be splattered all over their nice white walls. I waited for it, but instead of the pain I felt what can only be described as a violent hug. It took me only a second to realize that Mayden had wrapped her arms around me and put her body between my head and the gun.
I was sucked back to reality as my brain figured out that I was not being shot, but I was in fact being shoved into the boobs of a teenage girl. The gap between certain death and sexual arousal was a huge jump for my brain to make. After a moment of being light headed and trying to catch my breath I settled on the fact that yes, there were boobs but they were saving my life. My ringing ears faded back into reality and straight into the yelling.
“You can not hurt him he’s somebody I care about!” Mayden was screaming.
“Jared, listen, yes you’re angry but if you shoot him you’ll be in trouble, give Mayden a chance to explain,” I heard the mom yelling above the three shrieking children.
“Fine,” I heard her dad growl. Mayden slowly let me go but she kept an arm protectively around my waist. Mayden’s dad had lowered the gun to his side, but he was glaring at me like looks could kill. I avoided his eyes.
“What is he your boyfriend or something?” Her dad snapped at Mayden looking me up and down.
“Yes!” I yelled before Mayden could say anything. It sounded better than that I was the psycho murderer that lived in the woods and kidnapped her. There was a sharp pain in the back of my head as Mayden whapped me with the palm of her hand.
“Ow,” I complained.
“He’s not my boyfriend!” Mayden defended.
“Then what the heck is he?” her dad yelled back.
“It can’t really be quickly explained,” Mayden said. I noticed that she was unconsciously holding me tighter.
“Then why don’t you put the kids to bed, Jared and put the gun away. I’ll go make some coffee so we can talk this out,” her mom said.
“I don’t want you alone with this freak, we have no idea how dangerous he is,” Her dad snapped. He was looking at me like I was a moldy slab of meat he found in a sandwich.
“I won’t be alone I have Mayden with me, we’ll just be downstairs, if I yell you’ll hear me. Plus, look at him, he’s shaking like a chihuahua. I don’t think he’s going to be hurting anyone,” her mom said trying to sound soothing.
“Fine,” her dad said. He turned away and stalked back towards the room. I felt Mayden slip away. Her mom was right though, I was shaking like crazy, my mouth was dry and I was still a little light headed. Mayden going away made it feel like I was losing something solid to hold onto, I reached after her. She took my hands and pulled me to my feet. I wavered, gripping the rail of the stairs.
“You good?” She asked placing a gentle hand on my shoulder.
“I think I might puke,” I said running a shaky hand through my hair.
“Get back in bed kids, everything’s okay! Your dad’ll be in to tuck you in in a minute,” Mayden’s mom said cheerfully. The kids that had made it out of bed turned slowly and went back into their rooms. Then her mom pushed passed Mayden and I and headed for the stairs. She was beckoning for us to come with, but she didn’t look angry. We followed her down the stairs, Mayden’s small hand gripped my arm ever so slightly to make sure that I didn’t collapse. We made it to the bottom and the floor didn’t seem to be tilting as much anymore. We padded across the hardwood floor as Mayden’s mom turned on lights revealing a beautiful bright house. We got to the kitchen and Mayden placed me on a wooden chair at the kitchen table and stood next to me. Mayden’s mom put a glass of water down in front of me. I drained half the cup in one gulp.
“So, now that you’re not about to be shot. What do we call you?” Her mom said nicely filling my glass back up to the top.
“Uh, you can call me Andy,” I said. My voice was thin and raspy. I swallowed air and took another sip of water.
“My name is Lynda, and you can call my husband Jared,” She said, she patted my shoulder and I nearly jumped a foot in the air.
“Relax, honey. Nothings going to hurt you,” Lynda said. Mayden slid into the seat diagonally to me. I heard creaking on the stairs as Jared made his way down. He had changed into sweatpants and a tee shirt but he still looked mad enough to snap my neck. He marched into the room and his wife handed him a cup of coffee. He took it and took a sip.
“So what’s going on here?” he said.
“This is Andy, and we’re going to figure out why he’s here,” Lynda said, she sat in the chair next to me.
“Well, I’m waiting, explain,” Jared said waving a hand. Mayden and I looked at each other. I didn’t know where to start.
“So before I say anything else, I want you to know that I would not be alive if it weren't for him, so be nice to him,” Mayden said.
“Fine,” Jared said, but the aggression wasn’t there as much, it was more of an agreement.
“When I said that I was in the basement of the school that’s not where I was. I was with him,” She said, I could see the rage coming back to her dad’s face, I gripped the table edge with my sweaty fingers.
“Where exactly was he?” Jared said slowly like he was trying to maintain his composure. I felt a cold dread slither down my back. We were revealed, it was over if Mayden told where we were from, or who I was.
“Mayden no. Don’t tell him, it will ruin everything I’ve worked for,” I squeezed the table, I couldn’t look up off the ground.
“I have to tell him, Andy,” she said.
“Please, no, I’m a good person,” I begged, shaking my head. I didn’t want to cry but I could already feel the misery of failure and a cold jail cell. I held back the tears. Mayden took a deep breathe and told the whole story. From start to finish, her leaving the school, getting lost, me finding her and rescuing her. She left out the part about us cuddling, but the point got across. She told about the house in the woods and how I lived there, and the four other guys two. My gut was twisting. I could feel the searching eyes of her mother on me and a shrank away even farther. Then she went on to tell about the fact that I was trying to solve the murders that were happening at the school, and I had come to her for a school schedule. She hadn’t known I was coming. As the story concluded without any mention of our romantic escapades the room fell into silence.
“So, I’ll be calling the doctor to have you checked for STDs in the morning,” Lynda said matter of factly.
“No, mom I never had sex with him, never even came close,” Mayden said with disgust her mom shrugged and settled back into her chair.
“He lives in the woods and he does all these things, but who is he?” Jared said, and my heart stopped. I shook my head again, slowly and jerkily like a robot that needed oiling.
“Please, Mayden,” I begged helplessly.
“I’m sorry, but the truth needs to come out. Mom, Dad, this is Andy Biersack, the dead boy that killed the football player ten years ago,” Mayden said. The silence that followed was thick enough to cut with a knife. It lasted for what felt like hours.
“You expect us to just let him go, a wanted murderer, breaking into my daughter’s bedroom and I should just let him run free,” Jared said, I was ready to run.
“Dad, I would have frozen to death, he saved me,” Mayden said.
“Jared, I think we owe him one. He saved our daughter, let him go, just this once,” Lynda said, and Jared followed with his reluctant agreement.
“Fine,”
