Sons of Night

Chapter 12

Andy’s POV
I turned quickly away from the chaotic scene, keeping my face away from the cameras. If any of them caught a glance of my face it could have been detrimental to the entire group not just myself. I was relieved that she was finally gone. I could get on without feeling for someone getting in my way. As I walked back to the school to meet the band I was suddenly hit with the reality of what I was doing. My parents thought that I was dead. They buried a coffin without my remains and put up a gravestone with my name on it. The thought made me sick. I had read it in the mortuary in the paper when they pronounced me dead, it had a picture of my death certificate and everything. I was legally dead. I swallowed hard as I walked through the now dark and empty streets. I couldn’t imagine how they’d react to seeing me again. What if they rejected me? I hated that I was starting to get emotional. I’d spent so many years with myself numbed. Now all the feelings were coming back in a rush and I didn’t know how to deal with them. I walked silently with my head down.
I heard fast paced footsteps heading in my direction. I ignored them and kept walking. I figured that if I left them alone, they would leave me alone. I hadn’t spoken to anyone other than Mayden outside the group for as long as I’d been in the woods. The footsteps passed me, high heels walking at a fast, angry clip. They passed and went on behind me as I passed the now closed restaurant from earlier. She was about a yard and a half behind me when my knee connected with something hard. There was a squeal of pain and I was snapped out of my zone to see a little blond girl with curly hair sprawled on the pavement in front of me. Blood dripped from her nose, tears streamed down her face, and wails echoed from her mouth. Directly under street light at that, so I could see it all beautifully. My first time back in society and I managed to bust up a little girl’s nose.
“I am so sorry!” I gasped kneeling down in front of her. She had to be only five years old. She sat up as I kneeled down, her screams still echoing down the street. Surely she would attract some attention if I didn’t calm her down.
“It’s okay, It’s okay,” I said, trying to hush her. I patted my pockets for something to clean her up with. I pulled out a wrinkled napkin that had been in my pockets for God knows how long and started dabbing gently at her nose. She screamed louder and tried to push me away.
“You get your hands off my daughter,” I heard the high heeled woman snap. I turned to face her. She hadn’t seen what happened.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to,” I gasped. She knelt down and pushed me out from in front of her child so she could get a look.
“Sweetie, what did he do to you?” The woman asked dabbing at her daughter with some fresh tissues.
“He kicked me in the face,” The girl sputtered out between sobs. The woman looked at me with a glare like death.
“I didn’t see her,” I defended desperately. I felt horrible.
“What kind of drugs are you on? She was right under a street light! How didn’t you see her?”
“If it’s your daughter then why is she walking so far behind you? Aren’t you supposed to hold hands with your kid when they’re that age? You know? When there’s a fucking serial killer on the loose?” I said. There was a whistle of air and my head jerked to the side as a sharp pain radiated across my cheek. She slapped me. I had to resist the urge to hit back. I used to being with guys, if they hit me I usually hit back. I had to remind myself that hitting women was wrong.
“You watch your language around my kid,” She spat.
“Mommy, if he hit me on accident, doesn’t it make you worse because you hit him on purpose,” The little girl said with remarkable clarity. She’d calmed down a bit while her mother and I had been conversing.
“Yeah, I agree,” I said with the same tone as the girl. I felt my lips forming a smirk, and I looked at the lady. She was staring at her daughter in shock, but her face had softened. She cleared her throat and looked at me.
“I’m sorry. She is right. I shouldn’t have hit you,”
“It’s okay,” I said, “I really feel bad though. I honestly didn’t mean to hurt her”
“It’s okay. Tell me your name and we can be friends,” The little girl said, pure innocence. I felt bad but I knew right away that I had to lie.
“My name is Drew,” I said, she smiled while her mom continued to wipe the blood off of her. It was a bit of a morbid scene.
“I’m Haley,” The girl beamed.
“Hi Haley. Does your nose still hurt?”
“A little, but it’s okay because we’re friends now and you didn’t mean to,” I could help but smile at her sweet little voice.
“Okay, honey. You’ve made a friend but now we have to go and get you home. Again, I’m sorry Drew,” The woman said pulling the girl to her feet and standing up herself. I rose with them and we split up our separate ways. I glanced back for a minute and Haley was waving at me. I gave her a little wave before turning, pulling up my hood and heading back towards the school. My face was sore but my heart was warmed. I got back to the school in a few minutes and I could hear the guys talking anxiously. They turned as I got close.
“Dude, what took you so long?” Jake said as I came up.
“Long story,” I said,
“Same reason why you have welt on your face in the shape of a hand,” Ashley said raising an eyebrow.
“Yep,” I said nodding, “But I’ll tell you about it later. How’s CC?”
“Not good, he lost consciousness completely about ten minutes ago. He won’t last more than another few hours unless we get him help,” Jinxx reported. My stomach flipped.
“Okay then, let’s go. I hope my parents still live here,”
