Sons of Night

Prologue

June, 30th 2005
Andy's POV
"Hey fag, come here," The harsh deep voice echoed down the hall, it was Cody. I ignored it and kept walking. I just needed to get to class in this stupid christian school. He wouldn't follow me there. Not that the teachers would help if they saw him beat me up, they thought I was a spawn of Satan.
"Yo, Ballsack I'm talking to you," He yelled again down the hall. I was getting close to the stairs, I just had to go down one flight and that I was somewhere that one might consider safe. Too bad I hadn't hit my growth spurt yet, I was still a scrawny little whelp, I couldn't do a thing to get him away. I felt a hand grab my bony fourteen year old shoulder and yank me to a stop.
"Hey what's that Ballsack? A diary?" He pulled my lyric book out from under my arm. I shouldn't have carried it out in the open where it could be seen.
"Give it back!" I yelled, unfortunately my voice that had started coming out deeply had cracked in the middle of my sentence sending me back to sounding like a five year old again. I lunged at him in an attempt to grab the notebook. With a swift back hand to my chest by one of his football player arms he knocked me onto my back with ease. I gasped for my breath and tried to get up again, but he was already looking through the notebook.
"Are these poems? You're such a fag," He said. I didn't say anything, for fear of my voice cracking again. I was going to make an attempt at taking it from him again when one of the other football players, Tyrone, came up behind me and held me so I couldn't move. He was at least a head taller than me. My frustration turned to blind panic as Cody took out a lighter and held it up o the book.
"What if I did this?" He chided while the numb skull holding me laughed.
"No!" I screamed fighting against the one gripping me. It was useless. Cody flicked the lighter and held it up to the bottom of the pages the fire began to catch.
"No!" I screamed again, and with a last desperate attempt for what I considered my life I somehow managed to push my way out of my captors arms. I was in a blind rage. I sprinted at Cody and with all of my body weight and strength I shoved him as hard as I could. At first there was joy for me, I managed to knock him over. He dropped the notebook and I saw as it fell that the fire was put out and damage was minimal, I'd saved it. Then I realized that Cody had been standing on the edge of the stairs. he fell straight back down the stairs and hard. In thirty steps he only hit the ground once and that was at the bottom. I hadn't meant to hit him that hard. There was a snap followed by a sickening silence. I looked down the stairs. Cody lay at the bottom. At first I thought that he was still alive. Then I saw that his both his face and his back where turned straight to the ceiling. His eyes where open and clouded. Horror numbed me as I realized what I had done. Tyrone came to my side and looked down the stairs, then his eyes turned to me in fear.
"Dude, you killed Cody," Tyrone said, taking a shocked step away from me. People in the halls had seen what happened they were staring at me in fear, and I was just as afraid.
"I didn't mean to," I squeaked.
"Someone call the cops," Tyrone screamed, "Andy killed Cody," I saw multiple people head for phones. What else could I do, no one here would vouch for me. I'd be jailed forever. I grabbed the notebook and ran. Tyrone tried to grab me but missed. I got to a window and in an adrenaline filled move I threw a chair that had been in the hallway at it. On the second try the window shattered. As I ran for the window I saw a group of girls screaming and cowering.
"Please don't kill us," one of them screamed when they saw me looking. I jumped for the window and pulled myself out onto the roof, the shards of glass cutting my stomach. I landed on a lower level roof and sprinted across it. I could see police cars flying up the road towards the school. I slung myself onto a ladder that lead to the ground. I could feel the unkempt metal cutting at my hands. I stopped once I was on the ground. I looked around, I could hear police sirens. I couldn't go home they'd look for me there. I ran again. I ran into the woods that surrounded the school. Woods that went for hundreds of miles in all directions around our little, rural, Ohioan town. I ran for as far as my body could handle, as fast as my legs could carry me. I stopped when I tripped fell. I had gone at least five miles I thought. I couldn't get up, but I had to keep going. They'd be after me still. I crawled for as far as I could, only getting a few more yards before all I could do was curl myself up next to a rock. I cried and threw up over and over again. I had killed someone. Yes someone I hated but a person all the same. After throwing up I pulled my hands away from my stomach and saw the blood, that was when I remembered that I was hurt. I was thirsty, hungry, in pain, and desperately afraid, for my punishment from what I'd done if I was caught. I was afraid then that I may die, I had lost so much blood that the world spun. I needed water. I got to my hands and knees and crawled downhill, looking for a creek bottom. I cupped my bleeding stomach to try to slow it down. I didn't want to die. Finally I collapsed entirely. I couldn't. I couldn't move. I couldn't see right. I was sure I was dead when I heard footsteps by my head. I looked up and saw a face above me. It wasn't a cop. He was grimy, and he had long dark hair shaved into a sort of Mohawk. I guessed he was in his early twenties.
"Well you're not looking so good," He said, "What are you doing out here?" He asked.
"I didn't mean to kill him," Was all that came out of my mouth, it was a harsh, dry, dead sound.
"Looks like you will fit in well with my group. Don't be afraid, I'll take care of you. The police won't catch you either. You'll be okay," He put an arm gently around my shoulders and sat me up, he held a bottle of water to my lips. I drank gratefully, still too weak to move.
"Let's get you someplace safe. Can you stand?" He asked. I shook my head, no I couldn't. He picked me up with ease and began to walk.
"Who are you? Where are you taking me?" I asked, slightly afraid of him.
"My name is Ashley, I lead a group called the Sons of Night. We are a group of people who have been accused of or committed accidental crimes. We all think we're innocent, but the world won't believe it. We try to do good and catch other convicts who are worse than us to make up for our supposed crimes in hope that we can go back into society one day. I am taking you to our camp, you will be our newest member,"

Notes

Hello people. This is my second story and I have a lot of plans. I hope you enjoyed this little prologue and I hope you keep reading. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think so far. I update just about every Sunday, and if I don't I'll have a good excuse as to why not. If anyone is interested my Tumblr is sonoorousmusic.tumblr.com . for the record I am totally against the use of the word "fag" I just thought that it made sense for this point. This story is rated R for violence, subjects, and language, so read if you dare. Have a good day.
