~CC’s POV~
I’ve always kept a few drum loops on a laptop I’ve had for years. I get these great ideas for songs but they don’t really work with the type of music my band plays. I’m pretty sure “Like not at all” were the exact words I was told. So I began to lay down a few new drum loops for what would later become a song, I mean if you’re going to do something different why not go 180 degrees away from your comfort zone?

The result sparked my interest in experimenting with different kits and ways to layer sounds. I created a few starter electronic music songs under a fake profile and tweeted the songs to my favorite artist not really expecting a response. When he encouraged me to keep making music I ran with it and found some likeminded artists online that knew more about DJing.

One of the first things I learned as a DJ is that your set has to tell a story and the first story I watched being created by a DJ was the history of existence from the point of view of fire. There were heavy bass drops, explosive snares aided by gentle hi hats and wubby synths that were stacked, reverbed, tightened and reverbed some more until the entire progression changed up at 45ish second intervals. I had to admit that the concept seemed ridiculous but after hearing it I understood the message, sometimes everything is all right and sometimes it isn’t but either way the beat goes on.

After a few of my best hour long mixes gathered some decent views I sent them off to every DJ I could think of in an attempt to land a collab. Ultimately I wanted a chance to B2B with my favorite DJ. I think everyone has that one DJ that changed their view of electronic music and for me it was him, he’d completed several world tours and never took a break, had multiple houses all over the world, a private jet and a clothing line but he was humble. The most amazing thing about him was that he’d seemed to have mastered the art of pursuing his passion for music enough to have transcended all else.

When I enter the stage as a DJ I like to hide behind my set and build the music up to the point of exploding onto the scene. From the crowd it looks like I appear from out of nowhere and the good vibes begin to flow, from the booth I see all of my equipment in front of me and a sea of people dancing to the sounds I create. Another thing I learned from DJing is that some of the best minds consider music to be a creative process and not an end goal and that you don’t release an album to make money but instead tell a story from beginning to end as best you can through the instruments you’re trained in.

There’s no greater feeling than living in the moment while creating beats and witnessing the flow of energy from the crowd. Having the chance to work alongside a musical genius takes it all to another level that I currently have no words to describe.

Wearing a costume while I was behind the booth allowed me to hide from my past success as a drummer. I played sets all over the world under this new persona that allowed me to reach new heights as an artist. I still found time to storm chase in new cities between set prep and shows while traveling, learning and doing what I loved. Eventually I became part of the underground scene of DJs that help people get into creating electronic dance music, it took me years but I finally found my fam.
