Jake laughed and took off after the Jaguar. “I let them get ahead of us.” He grinned and nodded. “You can buy Lauren’s meal for losing the race.”

I suddenly felt sick to the stomach, how am I going to eat in front of her? I can’t seem to string a coherent sentence together in her presence.

Jake punched me in the muscle and blasted the music again. “Relax bro. When you talk to her pretend you know a secret that she doesn’t know. Chicks love mystery.”

“She knows my name” I sighed and looked in the side mirror. I look stupid when I think of her. “She knows your name.” I rolled my eyes and looked out the window.

“Lauren’s your girl.” Jake laughed again. “My mom works with Hannah’s mom. We used to hang out back in the day.” Jake sighed. “But she didn’t look like that back then.” He grinned as he drove.

“Dude you like her.” I teased.

“She’s got legs for days.” He started to pull up next to their car at the red light.

“Dude, no.” I tried to stop him.

“You know a secret now.” Jake whispered, stopping next to the Jaguar. “You win!” Jake nodded.

I had my I-have-a-secret face ready when I glanced at Lauren. She tucked her hair behind her ear and looked into my eyes. “I owe you lunch.” I said, nodding my chin the way Jake did.

Lauren looked into my eyes again. “Sweet.” She giggled.

Jake pretended to stall the car at the green light. “I really need to learn to drive this thing.” He shrugged as the girls sped away.

“You’re doing it on purpose.” I rolled my eyes. I tried to focus on the cool night air caressing my neck and of things I could say to Lauren without sounding stupid.
When we got to Burger Bling Jake held the door for them and they giggled. I slipped him a fist bump and tried to look cool as we walked in. My confidence soon faded.

“Ashley’s here.” Jake said under his breath.

I turned to see a table full of football team. Ashley, the guy I fought with earlier looked up from his tray and dropped his burger when he saw me walk in.

I knew I’d have to fight him.
