Fvck The Haters

“Is that Lauren?” Jake said too loudly.

“Hi Jake!” Lauren shouted in response. I fiercely avoided eye contact.

“Hey Lauren.” Jake waved, “Hey Hannah.”

I glared at Jake. “Really?” I hissed under my breath. Why did Lauren know Jake’s name?

“Hey Jeremy.” Lauren said.

I looked at her and found myself brushing my hair away from my eyes again. The red light was taking forever. I’d never made eye contact with her before and it was intense. She knows my name. I smiled at her and waved awkwardly. “H-hey uh.” I said, the second I stuttered the words I felt my face turning hot with embarrassment.

“What’re you guys up to?” Hannah asked.

“We’re thinking of getting something to eat.” Jake nodded his chin slightly.

I glared at Jake, he looked as confident as I wanted to feel in front of Lauren.

“We’re going to Burger Bling. It’s like, the only thing open.” Hannah said and looked at me. “You should come.” She smiled.

“I don’t know. Um. Okay.” I nodded my head for some reason. This was going horribly. I scraped my palms down the side of my legs nervously.

“Race ya.” Jake revved the motor and grinned. I glared at him again.

“Okay!” Hannah giggled.

I was trying to look away from Lauren but I couldn’t. I tried not to think of prom but when I saw her black and red nail polish I thought of the corsage I imagined giving to her on prom night.

Jake’s awesomeness flew out the window when he stalled the car and the girls sped away.

“Dude what the hell was that? You made me look like a jackass.” I shouted and folded my arms.
