Fvck The Haters

Ice those egos

“Destery and Jeremy.” The principal greeted us when we walked in to his office. “Have a seat.” He offered.

“Your parents have yet to be notified.” He said, looking amused. “I don’t think there’s a punishment that I can hand down to either of you that would be worse than what you’ve already done to each other.” He laughed briefly but caught himself.

I glanced over at Destery and noticed we both had our arms folded, pouting in pain but trying to look tough at the same time.

"Do you have football practice today?” He asked.

“Yes.” I answered flatly.

“If we’re still on the team.” Destery scoffed.

“Why wouldn’t you be?” The principal asked.

“The coach told us last time that if we’re in another fight we’re off the team.” I offered.

“That didn’t stop you guys.” He answered sternly.

“I’m sorry.” I didn’t know what else to say.

“Let’s see if you two can’t work this out maturely while I have a word with the coach.” He left the room.

I wasn't afraid to be alone with him and I wanted the awkward silence to end. “I’m sorry about your contact.” I said quietly.

“Whatever, I have another pair at home.” Destery looked at his feet.

The silence continued.

“Lauren seems pretty upset.” Destery said.

More awkward silence occupied the moments until the principal returned to the room.

“These two clowns.” The coach laughed when he saw us. “Give them the afternoon off and if they have the cojones to show up on my field tomorrow they can run laps for a week.” He paused to make eye contact with each of us. “I suggest you ice those bruised egos gentlemen.” He shook his head and left the room.

The principal returned to his desk and said nothing for the next minute. “You heard the coach. Go ice your egos.” He waved toward the door dismissively.

“Thank you.” I said gratefully getting up to leave.

He laughed briefly. “Good luck explaining this to your mothers.” He said without looking up from the papers on his desk.
