I Was So Bitter, Till You Came Along

Eighteen

I'd gotten my sling removed, and my shoulder had healed up nicely. I was happy to finally be able to wash my hair by myself, but Andy insisted on doing it anyway whenever we showered together.

Ashley had gathered us up in the kitchen this morning with no explanation, only that he needed to talk to us about something important. As we waited, Andy braided my damp hair, finishing when Ashley entered the room. I handed him a hair tie, and he tied it, grabbing my hand under the table.

"What's up, Ashley?" I asked. He sat down quietly, and he had a folder with him.

"I bought a new house," he said, looking up at me from the folder. I glanced at Andy.

"What?" I asked. He sighed.

"I bought a house. I'm moving out. Which means this," he slid the folder over to Andy, "is for you. It's information about this house." Andy opened it and looked through it.

"So you're leaving? Just like that?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah. I figured that since you two are together now, you won't want me around when you're... you know... and I think it's a good idea. For all of us," he said.

"But Ashley, we've only been together a week. That's not when couples usually live alone together," I said with a small laugh.

"Let's face it. You guys have practically been inseparable. I've hardly been home this past week while I was looking at houses, and you've proven capable of living together. If me moving out is going to take a toll on your relationship, I hope it's a good one," he said.

"Oh," was all I could say.

"Well, when are you leaving?" Andy asked.

"I'm leaving Saturday," he said. I nodded, and he stood up, straightening his shirt out.

"I'll be upstairs packing if you need me," he said with a simple nod of his head, and he left. I turned to Andy.

"What happens now? Who will pay the bills? I don't know how to do taxes. How am I-"

"Casey. Casey, it'll be okay. Ashley and I always took turns paying the bills. I know how to do it. And what happens is we can do whatever we want. We're a team, okay? That means that whenever we get into a fight about something, we just have to struggle through it and come out the other side stronger and better than before. Okay? Can you do that for me?" He asked. I nodded. He smiled, and he pressed a soft kiss against my lips.

"And it's not like he's moving to another country. You can still see him all the time, so don't be upset about that," he said. I smiled.

"Okay. It's just, when he showed up in Baltimore, I expected to be living with him forever. I didn't expect this; dating you and going on Warped. It's already August, and I haven't gotten where I want to be yet," I said. Andy nodded.

"And where is it you want to be?" He asked.

"On my way to college," I said softly. Andy looked down at his lap for a minute before focusing his attention back on me.

"You know that I dropped out of high school, right?" He asked.

"Yeah. But I didn't. I didn't become a singer. I can't even sing or write songs. I don't know how you do it, but I could never do it, even though I want to. But it's not a want that's eating me up. What I want is to be successful. Successful in a way that helps others learn. I want to be an English teacher," I told him. Andy smiled.

"That's the first time I've heard you admit that," he said. I laughed quietly.

"Yeah. That's because I didn't know I wanted it until now. But even so, it's still a lot of schooling that I have to go through to get a degree in teaching. I'll be about twenty-five before I can even think about becoming a teacher," I said. Andy placed a hand on my cheek, and he gazed at me.

"And you know what?" He asked.

"What?"

"It will be so worth it. You know why?" I shook my head, "Because I'm going to help you. You'll be so good at writing poetry and stories by the end that everyone who reads them will be astonished. You'll be the female version of Edgar Allan Poe, just not as creepy," he said. I laughed, and Andy leant down, pressing a kiss against my lips.

"You're amazing, you know that?" I asked him after the kiss. He smirked.

"I had an idea," he said. I smiled, kissing him once more.

Notes
