The star that burned so bright

Chapter Three

Droning tones overlapped lesson to lesson and merged into one; I could not decipher any particular voice. Students and teachers blurred into an abyss of drowsiness. Dazed by pure exhaustion there was nothing left to do but collapse when the shrill bell tolled and called us to our lunch hour. Lines of people rushed into the cafeteria to shove their way to the food counter, like they’d been starved for weeks.

We on the other hand, that is Lilly and I, crept our way past to get a table before people had time to spill their food all over the now clean plastic furniture. There was no sign anywhere of the ‘new guy’; the only view was the ordinary scene of animal like students and a clinical grey lunch room. I shivered at the prospect that this, in some way, could resemble the terror I faced at home. Like there was no escape and everywhere I looked there would be something or someone to remind me. At least here I was not alone.

“Where do you think the new guy will hang out” Lilly asked me, not knowing I had been wondering the exact same thing all day. The truth was, I was always intrigued by new students, how they managed to fit in and if they were hiding any dark secrets like me. My only response to Lilly was a shrug of my shoulders, having to hint to her at my evident fatigue.
“You know, sometimes I wonder if you’re a vampire with your daytime drowsiness, Tam” She always commented, trying to evoke a conclusion. Her attempts were at a loss. She continues to talk at me rather than with me as I stared into nothingness.

I could still picture his eyes, piercing me like a blade. I could imagine him walking into the lunch room, sitting alone at the table and watching the sea of people ripple through like waves. His hair, falling over one eye, making glances around less obvious. I could see him clearly. He was wearing black skinny jeans and a white top with some kind of bleeding heart design over his own heart, a black hooded top with its long sleeves stopping to show his pale manly hands. My imagination was not usually this vivid out of my dream world. Though Lilly’s nattering soon brought me back to real life.

“Tammy, he’s staring right at you” she whispered to me while looking over at a table.
“Who is?” I asked, fixing my eyes on the thick grey plastic of our own lunch table.
“The new guy, and he’s cute!” What is she talking about I thought to myself.

My eyes reached the same spot that hers were hovering over and there he was. He was staring straight at me. My heart began beating like a humming bird’s wings. I wasn’t imagining him. He was here. He was real.
