Rise From the Ashes

Chapter sixteen

Violet's POV:

My lips were still tingling.

After Andy had decided to impromptu kiss me, I had run off, wanting to create as much distance as I could between us. Eventually, I had made my way back to our shared tent and had ignored him as I got ready for bed. But I didn't fall asleep right away like I had wanted, and instead had tossed and turned all night, feigning slumber until Andy fell into unconsciousness.

I got up some time after he went to bed, and I quickly pulled on a tank top, leggings and my combat boots. With anxiety rushing through my veins, I just felt the sudden urge to let out some steam. And considering Andy would probably kill me if I attempted to attack F.E.A.R again, by myself, I needed another option.

I snuck into one of the garages that was converted into a training type space. Along the metal, no doubt sound-proof walls, a variety of weaponry was lined up and polished to perfection.I aimlessly ran my fingers across the cool, metal surface, moving to a shiny collection of throwing knives. Despite my time on my own, I had yet to perfect my skills with any weapon of my choice. Might as well start now if I'm in the middle of a war.

I gently pricked my finger with the tip of the blade, before I rolled the blade in my palm, feeling its grip. I positioned my body in front of one of the many targets, and carefully aimed the knife. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes as I sharply jerked my wrist back, and let the blade fly.

It didn't hit the bullseye, which was what i had expected, but what surprised me and made me erupt into a fit of giggles was that it had actually hit the target. I grinned to myself as I positioned another knife, and aimed towards the right a little more, before letting it go. This one got even closer, making pride swell in my chest.

I don't know how long I spent training in the garage. I went from knife throwing to shooting with various guns, as well as normal combat training. I worked on my agility shortly after, running laps of the entire camp when the sun began to peak over the desert. I felt better than I had in years, and most importantly, I felt free. This is what I am fighting for, freedom.

I sauntered to the dining hall some time later, coated in a sheet of sweat and thoroughly exhausted but smiling widely. I filled a tray of food before I went back to training, this time, focussing on my archery.

This place had everything, let me tell you.

In the midst of my second round of archery for the day, I was called to an emergency meeting in the board room with the other leaders.

"what's this about?" I snapped, taking a seat but refusing to even glance at Andy.

Ashley grinned wickedly, "time for a little game of sorts. Call it target practice if you will."

I smiled, standing up, "good thing I've been practicing then."

Jake chuckled as he entered, "not like that, Vi. This is a little more... intense. It helps for attacks on the city, and keeps us alert and focussed."

I frowned, "wait, what are we doing then?"

Jinxx casually draped na arm across my shoulder as he led me from the room, "you'll just have to wait and see, Violet." he turned me so that we were eye-to-eye, "but trust me, you'll like it."
