Free Bird

"I have a boyfriend!" She yells, finally letting all her excitement out with that one statement
"Wait. What? Who? When? How?" I ask all these questions sounding like such a teen girl
"He came into work a few days before vacation, and we've been talking. he came in during my shift this morning to get his now usual and he asked me out!"
"Congrats" I tell her as I hug her, "You never told me his name"
"Chris. I want you to meet him. Like now!"
Before I can say anything I am pulled from my bed and out of the room. She drags me out the door of our housing complex, and through campus to the football field. We see a lot of guys out on the field stretching for practice. She scans the crowd, and then smiles.
"Number 25" she tells me.
I scan the numbers looking for the one she told me. When my eyes land on the number 25 his back is turned, so I keep watching until he turns around. When he does I feel my stomach drop. My heart stops, and it takes all my energy to not pass out. Chris. Chris Prior. Number 25 and Amelia's new boyfriend. I turn to her and see that she's waiting for my approval, but how can I approve? He abused me, left me in that closet that horrible day back in high school, what if he does that to her? I shut down. Just then I hear.
"Hey Amelia, what are you doing here sweetie?" that voice that told me endless times he loved me, yelled at me, those hands that now cups her face were thrown at me full force to cause pain.
"I wanted my best friend to meet you." she says with a smile gesturing towards me.
I turn away from him, I don't want him to see me. I grab my phone and dial Ashley, but he doesn't answer, none of the guys answer. I'm screwed.
"She's rude. Can't say hi?" he says to me
I feel tears form in my eyes as I run away.
"Hey! Wait up for me! I'll text you later hun?" I hear Amelia say as I run. Run from him, from this place, from the past!
