Free Bird

My mother makes us a small dinner of Ramen noodles and toast. We sit on her bed and eat in silence, well not total silence. I turn on music from my phone.
Saviour will be there

"Wait," my mom says a little later after listening to the song, "I know that song! I've heard it before."
"You have!" I say almost chocking on my noodles. Yes, I almost chocked on noodles. -_-
"Every week I ask a student to offer up a playlist that we listen to during our drawing time. Five songs, no cursing, and the songs have to mean something to you. At the end of drawing time the student who selected the playlist has to come up and explain why they chose those songs. A girl in my class," she begins as she rumbles through paper in her bag," wrote down that song and brought it in. Where is that paper?"
I sit in awe, Of course there would be other people on campus that listened to the guys band, this is there home town for Christ sake, God I'm stupid, I'm so used to being surrounded by rap and pop music. Just then she pulls out a piece of paper and hands it to me.

I chose these songs because they describe me. The first song, Sleepwalking is how I felt in high school. Always holding in the secret from my parents, they had enough to deal with with my little sister, they didn't need to worry about me. I kept my bullying a secret, my cutting a secret. Like the song says, time stood still for me, I always felt like I was sleepwalking.
The second song, Rise and Shine described how I was bullied, how they thought it was funny. I got tired of it eventually, tried to stand up for myself like the song says, but unlike the song, it didn't have a happy ending, it only got worse.
The third song, Sweet Blasphemy when I heard the chorus for the first time I realized I was strong, that there was more than the darkness, more than the life I was living. That's when I tried telling my parents, but before I could, my sister got sicker, so I didn't but I held onto the song to get me through everything.
The forth song, Lost It All reminds me of my sister and of me. I lost it all the day I lost my sister. I felt defeated, broken, like nothing could be fixed. But like it says, we all fall down sometimes. I played the song for my parents, then I told them about me, that I had been being bullied for years. That I wanted to die, but I couldn't be the reason they lost both daughters. We all cried, as we realized we had all fallen down.
The final song, Saviour, if it wasn't for this song, I don't think I would be alive. I was ready to kill myself, ready to make that final cut to turn my world to black, but then this song came on. I listened to it, then right as I was about to cut again, I stopped. I threw the razor across the room, and I cried. I cried all night, until my parents got home with Lillian. I hugged my sister, my parents, and realized this is where I need to be.
Thank you, I know I probably stood up here for ten minutes, but now not only do you know why these songs are important to me, you know a little bit more about me.

I shove the paper into my bag.
"What are you doing?" she asks in shock
"Do you still have this girl in class?" I ask
"Yes, but why are you?"
I pull out a piece of paper and put my cell number on it, my name, and my dorm number and hand it to my mother.
"Give this to her. Tell her to text, call, whatever! Tell her she won't regret it."
