Almost Easy (Janxx)
Trashed and Scattered
"Scythia, I made breakfast!" I said as I headed towards the attic's opening.
The little girl leaned her head down and asked, "What are we eating today, Mr. Jinxx?"
"You can just call me Jinxx," I reminded her. "Pancakes, strawberries and eggs. I also made orange juice."
The little girl grinned and said, "Okay! Let me get dressed and I'll be there." She dissapeared and a fee minutes later, she pushed down the ladder and climbed down it. She was holding her brush between her teeth and wearing a green flannel shirt with a white tank tip underneath and black skinny jeans with her bright yellow Converse. "Can you do my hair?"
"How should I do it?" I asked.
"I want you to braid it," she retorted excitedly.
"Okay." I quickly braided her hair, using a rubberband from my pocket to hold it in place. "Let's go eat breakfast, kiddie."
As soon as we got downstairs to the kitchen, Scythia grabbed plates from a cabinet and forks for us both. I smiled at her and took them from her, beginning to serve her. "How many pancakes?" I asked.
"Four," she said, standing on her toes to look over my shoulder.
"You'll never finish that," I told her. "I'll give you three."
"Fine," she agreed. " I want strawberries with it. Oh, and whipped cream."
"Alright," I replied. "Eggs?"
"Nah. Those are kinda gross." She made a face of disgust and I chuckled.
"Here you go. " I handed her the plate and she smiled. She stood on her toes and kissed my cheek.
"Thanks, Jinxx," she said. She sat at the table and I sat with her, checking my phone. I had a text from Jake and Andy.
Andy: We're in Nevada, almost at the border of Oregon. It'll take a day or two to reach you.
I texted back, That's great. I'll be waiting.
I opened Jake's message. It read, Jinxx, I really miss you. You're safe, right?
I replied, Yeah, I'm fine. I can't wait to see you. I want to talk to you about something.
Truth was, I was in love with him. I cared about him more than I cared about the others who were coming to get me and Scythia. I wasn't sure if he was aware of it. He probably was because I spent at least two hours a night texting him . Sometimes, we'd text about absolutely stupid things and I'd act like a huge dork. Oh God, it was probably obvious.
I put away my phone when I heard something tapping the window. "Scythia, get under the table," I said quietly. She nodded and grabbed a handful of strawberries before diving under the table. I grabbed one of the guns I kept in the kitchen's cabinets and aimed it at the window.
A twisted, gnarled hand scratched the window again. I shot the window and heard a slight scream of pain. I craned my neck to watch the dead creature scamper away on all fours.
"Can I come back up now?" Scythia asked, peering at me from under the table. She ate another strawbeery.
"Yeah, it's safe," I answered. She crawled from under the table and drank some of her orange juice.
"Can I learn how to use a gun?" she asked.
"I'd say no but due to the circumstances that we could die, I'll teach you when my friends get here," I promised.
"When will they be here?" Scythia asked. "It's been so long, Jinxx."
"In about two days, maybe less," I replied. "I wasn't able to locate where we were at first. But they're close, I assure you." I smoothed her hair from her eyes and kissed her forehead.
"Are they nice?" she asked, leaning over the table to grab the syrup. She squirted a genreous amount on her pancakes and began eating them quickly.
"Very nice," I replied. "I think you'll like them a lot."
Notes
I'm still getting the hang of this website. It's kinda hard to type on a tablet, especially when it's old as shit.
