Make Me Feel Alive

Dinner at Six

I chewed on a pencil, one headphone in as I typed up a memo. My fingers skimmed quickly across the keyboard as Ash Costello blared in my ear. I was on a New Years Day kick right now, and had all her songs on repeat.
I'd left Trevor asleep in my apartment this morning, since his class didn't start till twelve. He should be thankful that I shut the door so Toby wouldn't wake him up; Toby hated him.
Everything with him was just going downhill, and I didn't know what to do. I had never broken up with anyone before, and I hated hurting peoples feelings. But something was going to have to give because I couldn't keep dealing with him or his little manipulative fights.
I knew exactly what he was doing, I wasn't oblivious. I just hated fighting.
My fingers paused on the keyboard. We really did need to break up. But he was the only person I had in this city; I didn't have any family to fall back on.
I sighed, taking out my headphone.
"Ms. Tate!" I turned, seeing the weasely Mr. Wireman heading my way. "Can you cancel all my appointments for Tuesday? Something has come up and I can't make it. Give them my apologies."
"yes, sir," I nodded, scribbling that down on a notepad. I was incredibly forgetful, and if I didn't write it down I wouldn't remember.
"Oh, hows that doctor boyfriend on yours?" he suddenly asked, pausing directly in front of my desk.
I paused, frowning. "He's good. His exams are keeping him busy right now," I shrugged, shifting uncomfortably when he continued to just look at me.
It was rare I ever wore anything too revealing, so if he was trying to look down my dress it wasn't low enough for it to be possible.
"Is there anything else?" I asked.
"You're alone here in the city, aren't you?"
"Yeah. I moved here for the job."
"Ah. Terribly lonely. If you ever need someone to help you out, you know you can always ask me."
Yeah, and then you'd probably murder me.
"Thanks, Mr. Wireman," I forced a smile.
"Any time," he said as he backed away. He canceled his appointments constantly, I don't see how he got any work done.
I sighed, and reached up, balling my hair up and tying it. I hadn't fixed it this morning and it was just a complete mess as always.
"Hey, Morgan!" I glanced over, seeing Nate stroll out of the elevator.
"Hello, Mr. Faye. Craig isn't here yet." I said of his band manager.
"Oh, that's fine . I'm early. The other guys aren't gonna be here for a few more minutes." he leaned against my desk. "I can just hang with you, can't I?"
"If you don't mind me working while you do," I replied, avoiding his eyes as I pulled up the appointment book. Nate was sweet and all, but he wasn't my ideal of reliable from what I'd seen, and heard. Plus The girls in his band were always yelling at him for something.
I reached for the phone.
"How come you never hang out with any of us?" Nate suddenly asked, absently going through the pencil holders.
"There's a lot Of parties coming up, and you could always come with me," he sent me a wink. "There's this badass club downtown, and I'm friends with the guy who owns it."
"Um, I'm not much of a partier," I apologized, the phone still in my hand. "I work too much for it anyway."
"I'm sure you could make some time! Maybe this weekend or something. You'd like Xavier."
"Actually, I have plans with my boyfriend this weekend." Thank goodness I did. There was no way I would ever voluntarily party with Nate. Actually, there was no way I would ever actually party. I'd never even been to a party.
"Aw, that's too bad," Nate looked disappointed. "Maybe some other time then. How long you been dating him?"
"Seven months."
"Well that's not very long," he brightened, and I shrugged. I pressed the phone to my ear, hoping he would take a hint. Luckily, the rest of his band showed up, taking his attention off me, and I let my breath go.
I had to cancel a lot if appointments.
After an hour of calling people, it was my lunch, and I leaned back in my chair, checking my phone. I called Trevor when I realized I had a missed call.
"Hey," he answered after a few rings.
"Hey, sorry I missed your call. What's up?"
"It's about Saturday."
I felt my stomach drop. Was he canceling? "What about it?"
"Don't sound like that, I'm not canceling," he laughed, and I relaxed. "I just wanted to see if we couldn't move dinner to six? Then we can catch a movie and whatever else you wanna do."
"Oh, okay, that's cool with me. Six it is then."
"Awesome. Oh, and don't wear your glasses. You look prettier without them. Oh! And wear that blue dress with the flowy thing at the bottom, it's my favorite."
I touched my glasses self-consciously. "Okay. See you then."
Did I look that bad with my glasses?
