Escaping Grace

Splash

I mean literally all my mates who had been standing outside a minute ago chatting had all disappeared.
I grimaced. I hated it when they ditched me.
"Everyone disappear?" Andy asked, coming to stand beside me as he stuck his wallet into his pocket.
"Looks like it," I said.
I stepped outside the diner, and glanced up as I heard thunder.
It had rained all day earlier, so the streets were already wet. I shivered, wishing now I'd grabbed a jacket. "
Well, it was nice meeting you," I said, turning to look at Andy. "I guess we'll see each other at the sh--- AHHHH!" I screeched as water poured over me from the curb.
A car rushed past, and the curb water splashed me, drenching me.
I stood there a moment with my eyes closed, feeling water drip off my fingers and my nose.
That did not just happen.
THAT did NOT just happen to me.
I opened my eyes and looked down. I was drenched, everywhere.
I pulled my phone from my pocket hastily, and shook it, flinging droplets everywhere. Oh my God. Why? Just why?
"Shit," Andy stepped over to me.
Can I just die now? I wished, feeling tears press my eyes. Could I not just melt into the concrete and disappear? Of all the people who could have witnessed this, WHY HIM?
I pressed my hands over my face, and debated curling into a ball.
I wiped at my face, but everything was ruined. I was just wet.
"Shit." Andy said again, staring at me. "Are you okay?"
"No," I said, my voice small. I was SODDEN. and cold. And my phone was probably ruined.
I just wanted to go home.
"Here," he slipped out of his leather jacket and offered it to me. "You're freezing."
Was it the icicles hanging from my hair that gave him that idea?
I shook the remark from my mind and took his jacket, shirking it on.
It was warm, and smelled like cigarettes and cologne. The sleeves were too long, and it kind of looked like I was drowning in leather, but I was immediately grateful.
"Thanks," I sniffed, letting my phone fall in his pocket.
I pulled my hair out from the collar, and then sighed. I slipped a hairbow off my wrist and tied it into a halfhearted bun to keep it out of my face. "
I have never been so wet in my life," I muttered, ringing out my shirt.
Andy chuckled. "At least it was only water and not the actual car."
I beg to differ, I thought, but shrugged.
I pulled out the small case that kept my credit card and my money, and cringed. The five dollars I had in there was damp and my credit card had seen better days. At least it wouldn't crinkle.
"I need to go home," I glanced up, seeing no taxis whatsoever. Not that I even had enough money, but hopefully the driver wouldn't be douchy and would take my credit card.
"How far is your apartment?"
"On 18th Street. "
"That's like an hour and a half from here," Andy shook his head.
"You'll never make it walking."
"I can call a cab," I frowned. "It's not a big deal."
He glanced out at the street, which was abnormally cabless. I looked behind me, seeing the diner had a closed sign out front. Great. This tiny part of the city was probably dead after eleven and there wasn't a need for cabs.
And how far was I going to have to walk until I found one? My boots even had water in them and did that horrible squishing noise when I moved.
After a pained moment, I checked my phone.
Dead. It wouldn't even turn on. So much for the case, I thought, seeing water running across the screen behind the protector.
Now I didn't even have anyone's number! And I was going to have to replace it.
I bit my lip. This was going to be a shitty night after all.
"Here," I looked over at Andy to see him running a hand through his messy black hair, "I live a block from here. We can go back to my place and you can warm up and I'll call the guys to see if they can't stop partying long enough for one of your mates to answer."
I weighed my options.
There were no options.
"Okay," I said after a moment. "That sounds like a better plan then mine."
"What was yours?" he asked as we started walking.
"Walking until I found a cab."
Andy snorted, his hands slipping into his pockets. "Yeah, that wouldn't have taken long at all."
He shook his head, his hair brushing his cheeks. I'd been so devastated when he'd cut all of his hair off before, but now the new look was even better than the one before.
I crossed my arms, wishing I hadn't even come out tonight. Of course, meeting Andy and his band and now going to see his place definitely wasn't too much of a bummer.
He lit up a cigarette as we started across the street, and offered me one. I shook my head. "I don't smoke."
He raised a brow but didn't say anything, and a few minutes later we were walking up some steps and at his apartment door, and I heard the jingle of keys.
He pushed the door open and stepped inside, and I hurried in after him.
