Hide Your Heart

First Day

Mae sat at the counter of her family's home, her fingers dancing across the keyboard of her laptop. She had to go to school in a few minutes and wasn't looking forward to driving to a place she'd never been to before.

Her sister, Kaya, came bouncing down the stairs. Her black and blonde hair was curled ever so perfectly and her makeup was done just right. Kaya was wearing a long black maxi skirt, and a black tank top with the word 'lost' on it. She had a long black sweater over top of that and Mae couldn't help but think she looked a little over the top.

She glanced down at her own outfit- a pair of jeans, her faithful Toms, and a flannel shirt with a black tank top underneath it. Mae's hair was just straight and down.

"Is that really what your wearing?" Kaya asked, raising her brow.

Mae bit her lip, "I don't really care what these people think of me, Kay.."

"Why!?" She exclaimed. "Your future husband could be here!"

Mae laughed, "Doubt it." Though something inside of her leaped. "Come on, we'll be late." She stood up and grabbed her army green shoulder bag. Kaya nodded and grabbed her own black bag.

"We're leaving guys!" Kaya called to the girl's parents who were still sleeping. They heard a few drowsy "Bye's!" and set out to Mae's black Mini Cooper.

The ride was decently silent other than the music Kaya had forced on Mae. It was some band called AFI and Mae wished they were a little more quiet.

She was into more acoustic music, the Avett Brothers, John Mayer, the hardest she got was Death Cab For Cutie. Mae played the guitar and sang herself, so she felt more connected to singer-song writers than rock bands.

As they pulled in front of a large building with the words 'Dell High School' on the front of it, Mae felt herself grow nervous. Kaya would probably befriend that Andy guy and his friends. They looked similar and seemed the same.

Mae would end up having no one and it was hard for her to imagine starting over. Especially without Eran to call tonight.

The thought brought tears to the young girls eyes and she blinked to try and suppress them. She got out of the car as Kaya did and the girls walked in the school together.

"Nervous?" Kaya asked, making Mae crack a smile.

"A little bit but I already told you.." She shook her head. "I don't care what these people think of me."

"Yeah yeah, I get it. You haven't given a fuck since 1992." Kaya chuckled. "I-" But her sentence was cut short as she caught sight of a tall boy with long black hair and absolutely perfect blue eyes. "Who is that?"

"Oh.." Mae chuckled. "That's our next door neighbor. Andy Biersack."

"He's fucking gorgeous. How do you know him?" Kaya asked.

"I ran into him on my wall last night. He was looking for his cat and I found him." Mae shrugged.

"You have to introduce me!" Kaya exclaimed, taking her sisters hand and pulling over to the tall boy. Mae's eyes widened as he smiled at her, not even glancing at Kaya.

"Hi Mae.." He said, hypnotizing her with his gaze.

"Uh hey." She mumbled. "This is my sister Kaya, thought you guys would get along." Andy felt surprised since he thought she'd be coming over to talk to him but the other girl seemed miles more excited.

"Hi." He said, forcing a smile on his face.

"Hey." Kaya blushed. "I like your shirt." She pointed to his old AFI shirt. Andy nodded as thanks and he couldn't deny that this girl was attractive. Mae had left to go find her schedule from the office and though he noticed, he still kept talking to Kaya. He was exactly like her- even after only talking for five minutes, Andy knew he and her would get along.

"Well, come on. We should go get your schedule and I'll walk you." Andy smiled at Kaya as she blushed. He felt a twang of guilt as he looked over and saw Mae looking around the hall, seemingly confused.

"Okay." She smiled up at him and nodded. He waved at Mae who only sighed and walked towards her first class.

She knew Andy and her sister would get along, and the thought made her smile. Kaya had always been ridiculed in high school for the way she looked so now that someone looked like her, Mae felt like a proud sister.

But she couldn't deny the jealousy she felt.

As she kept walking she felt someone collide into her back. "Oh my god- I'm so sorry!" She turned to see a boy with blonde hair that flipped up on his head, square framed glasses, and pretty brown eyes. He was tall, and had a strong looking frame. His clothes looked similar to things Mae would wear, a pair of grey skinny jeans, a white shirt with the words City and Colour on it , and a flannel. He had on Toms as well.

"It's okay." She smiled, softly.

"I'm Jacob." He said, extending his hand.

"Mae Wingfield." She said, shaking his hand.

"Did you just move here?" He asked as she began to walk.

"Mhm." She nodded. "Happen to know where Mr. Carson's room is?"

Jacob chuckled, "Actually, I'm on my way there now. I'll show you."

"Cool." She smiled, "Nice shirt by the way."

"You like City And Colour?" He exclaimed.

"I love them!" She said. "I play their songs all the time!"

"Me too. Guitar?" He said.

"Yeah! I love playing." She smirked up at him.

"Awesome." He nodded, walking into a classroom. The first thing she noticed was Andy and Kaya. They were sitting next to each other and smiling. A few other guys were around that seemed to look like them and once again Mae felt a strange pang of jealousy.

She sat down in a desk next to Jacob and in front of Andy. "Hey Mae." Andy said, leaning up to her. She turned and smiled at him. Kaya was talking to another boy with brown hair and tattoos.

"Hey." She said, looking into his eyes. She could tell Jacob was a little uncomfortable at the exchange.

"These are my friends Chris, Mark, Bobby, and Sandra. We're in a band, Black Veil Brides." He said, his eyes drifting up and down her body. She was skinny, and kind of awkward. So why did Andy find her so beautiful? Especially when there was someone sitting next to him who was everything he should want!?

"Ah that's cool." She nodded.

"You should come to one of my shows sometime." He said, leaning on the back of her chair.
She shrugged, "Maybe."

"Awh Mae wouldn't be caught dead at a rock show! She listens to acoustic!" Kaya exclaimed. Jacob smirked at her and then back at Andy who still had that puppy dog look on his face.

"I've never written an acoustic song." Andy said just as the teacher walked in.

Mae didn't reply, so Kaya jumped at the opportunity, "You should write one for me." She giggled.

"Oh should I?" Andy smirked.

"Mhm." She grinned up at him as he just shook his head, smiling.

Mae tried to focus on the class- it was English 12 and she was getting really annoyed by Andy and Kaya who constantly talked about music, tattoos, and everything that didn't matter to Mae. Jacob glanced over at her and stuck his tongue out, making her smile. He seemed like a nice guy and she was happy to have found him.

Maybe this year wouldn't be so bad after all..

"No way!" Mae exclaimed, resting her chin in the palm of her hand.

"Hell yeah! I've been a barista at Starbucks for a year now!" Jacob smiled, taking a sip of his water. They were currently sitting at a lunch table, trying to get to know each other a little better.

"Can you get me free coffee?" Mae pleaded, biting into her apple. Jacob didn't seem to have a lot of friends, in fact he hadn't talked to anyone but her all day.

"I could try." He chuckled.

"Please do." She said, biting her lip. He was really cute, his blonde hair messy on his head and she could see a little bit of growth on his chin.

"So Andy.." Jacob raised his eyebrow. "How did you meet him?"

"We live next door." She shook her head.

"He's a little weird." Jacob chuckled. "He's got some friends, they don't live around here but in town. If you see them, walk in the opposite direction. They freak me out."

"Good to know." She said. "I don't think I have to worry about Andy though. He seems a little preoccupied with my sister."

"Yeah, looks like it." Jacob said, nodding to Kaya and Andy who were flirting at a table across the room.

Andy's arm slid around her shoulders as she splayed a hand across his chest. Mae shook her head and turned away.

She didn't care to watch the budding romance. Andy would probably hurt her sister in the end.

Notes

Hmm. Is Mae feeling a little jealous?
