Hide Your Heart

Part One: Straight Foward

Mae Wingfield walked down the steps of her new home. Her shoes clunked across the floor in a strange way that sounded different in her Cincinnati home than in her old Virginia one. After a long, agonizing trip the Wingfield family- mother, father, and two sisters, had made it to Ohio in one piece.

Mae- the eldest of the two daughters but only by a month- held great disdain to starting over. Not that she had to leave anyone behind, she didn't have friends where they came from anyway. Well, except one..

Kaya- the ladder of the two- on the other hand couldn't have been happier. She was starting a new chapter in her life and maybe there would be cute boys!

The girls, different in appearance with Mae's long, straight brown hair, pale skin, and light blue eyes and Kaya's half pitch black and half bleach blonde hair, green eyes and pale skin, were even more of a contrast.

"Mae, where are you going? You have unpacking to do!" Her mother, Allison, asked.

"On a walk." Mae mumbled, pushing the front door open and leaving without another word.
She walked across the rather nice sidewalk and shoved her hands in her pockets. She could see her breath in front of her and as she looked around she could tell they had moved to a very expensive neighborhood.

Mae's family had never had large quantities of money and as she saw the difference between her families house and the others, she felt self conscious.

The area seemed split, half the houses large and well kept and the others small, and chipped, Mae's house being the ladder.

She let out a sigh and reached up to touch a frozen tree branch above her. She blinked over and over trying to suppress the tears that were threatening her.

Eran Ramano- the only person who ever understood anything Mae ever said had died only a month before the Wingfield family decided to uproot their life and move to Cincinnati.

It was suicide. Eran had killed herself and Mae still couldn't come to terms with saying she
committed suicide. You commit a crime, and killing yourself is not a crime. She didn't know what she wanted to call it but every time she thought of seeing Eran's cold body hanging in the young girls closet, a little piece of her died.

Maybe in a way her parents knew that they had to move after that. Mae couldn't stay in the same town her best friend killed herself in so they took her to Ohio. That's what she liked to believe anyway.

As she walked on, she began to hear some crunching of leaves behind her. She turned her head to see nothing so she shrugged it off and kept going.

Then she heard it again and immediately whipped around the see a small cat on the ground behind her.

It was black and white and so tiny. It had powerful green eyes that seemed to stare straight into Mae's soul.

She bent down to see that it had a little black collar on that said Crow.

"Are you lost little buddy?" She asked, scratching behind his ear. He purred in content and rubbed his head against her jean clad knee. Mae picked him carefully to examine the collar closer, hoping it had some address.

With no such luck, she walked on with the cat in her arms. Maybe she'd see a sign or something..

"Crow?" Andy yelled, walking down the road. It was going to get dark soon and he was so worried he wouldn't be able to find his little man in time. He ran a hand through his long, black hair and rubbed at his piercing blue eyes, probably smearing the eyeliner he was wearing. "Are you out here buddy?"

The cat was Andy's best friend ever since his ex-girlfriend, Scout stomped all over his heart and he couldn't bear to lose him too.

"Crow!" He called again.

"Here!" Someome called back and Andy quirked his eyebrow.

Did his cat just answer him?

"I found him earlier.." Andy turned around to see a girl, around the age of sixteen or seventeen standing with Crow in her arms. She had long brown hair, that flowed delicately down her back.
Her eyes were almost as blue as his and her skin was creamy and beautiful.

He would have liked her appearance if she seemed more like him.

She wore a black tank top and jeans. Her feet were covered in old Toms and a backwards baseball cap adorned her head.

"Thank you so much." Andy said, his boots clunking across the pavement as he walked to her. He took Crow from her arms and kissed his head. "I thought I lost him. Where was he?"

"Just following me as I took I walk." She shrugged. "I don't really know the streets so.."

Andy nodded. "You new around here?"

"Yeah, just moved today." She smiled, softly, and something just seemed broken about it. "I'm Mae Wingfield." She had a twang of a country accent to her voice.

"Andy Biersack, where are you from?" He asked.

"Southern Virginia." She replied.

"Are you cold?" He chuckled, knowing it was colder in the Midwest and the girl only had a tank top on.

"Not really." She mumbled, looking at her feet.

"Do you know what school your going too?" He asked.

"Uh, Dell High?" She looked up at him again and he smiled.

"That's where I go- it uh- it kind of sucks but some cool dudes go there." He said, scratching Crow's head. Mae smiled at the small animal.

"Well, good to know." She nodded, taking her hat off and running a hand through her hair. "I'm going to head home, got a lot of unpacking to do." She smiled and turned to walk towards her house. Andy followed after her and jogged to keep up.

"Wait, I'll walk you!" He said, walking next to her. She looked over at him and smiled, softly.

"Where do you live?"

"Just up here, I'm the little brown house." She said, pointing to the small home. He chuckled.

"I'm next door." He smiled, looking over at her. She didn't seem to be very interested in him but Andy couldn't get enough. She was so straight forward and he liked that.

She wasn't pretty in his terms of the word: dyed hair, pierced and tattooed skin, and all black clothes but something about her made you look.

"Ah, well it was nice meeting you." She nodded and walked inside of her house, leaving Andy with a smile on his face.
