Born To Lead

Chapter 1

Today was my first day at this new school as a junior. I have no idea what to expect. My family and I moved to LA from Arizona because my mom had a better job offer, so we all had to come with since my dad wasn't working. I rolled out my my bed to begin to get dressed. I look into my closet and carefully chose my first outfit for the year. I've always known that first impression meant everything. So if I went in sweats, a large t shirt, and a sloppy bun, then no one would take me seriously. If I dressed too dark, then I'm setting people's expectations too high and they might assume it's a regular thing for me to dress in all black. Although I do have a lot of black, I like to switch it up at times. I ended up choosing a AFI band tee with blue jeans and chucks with my Anarchy studded cuff that his my scars from last year. You can't go wrong with a simple outfit. I walked over to my bathroom and started on doing my eyeliner and touched up my hair.
Soon I was shaken by my mom screaming at me, "Isabelle! Your bus is coming in 5 mins! Hurry up!!" Good thing I was already done.
I grabbed my backpack and headed out of my room. As I passed the kitchen, my mom passed me a peanut butter sandwich and we said our goodbyes. I walked out of our house and to the bus stop while eating my sandwich. Just as I finished eating, I noticed the bus pulled up. I dusted the crumbs off my chest and took a deep breath before stepping on to the crowded bus.
I quickly glanced over the people and sat in the empty seat that was closest to the back. I kept my head down low as I felt the person next to me scoot over, giving me a little bit more room. I placed my earbuds in my ears and began listening to The Horrorpops. We got near the school, and the whole ride I pretended to be on my phone as I felt eyes on me. The bus pulled in the parking lot of the school and dropped us off right in front. I hopped off and walked straight to the bookstore to receive my student ID knowing that that would be my only way of eating lunch later.
I heard the first bell rang signaling that it was time to head over to band. I glanced down at my schedule and saw it was Band. Excited as ever, I walked over to the band room. I opened the door and noticed that the room was completely empty. Like literally empty. There was no desks and all of the chairs were stacked up. It was a typical band room to me and it seem like I was the first to arrive. I was told that this was where color guard or flagline, as some people would call it, would first meet and we would migrate to another classroom. I walked over to the side of the room and sat against the wall. Soon I heard the door open and saw a few people walk in. All did not notice me which was good.
I hear the sprint bell go off signaling that students had 5 mins to get to class or else they would be considered late. I continued to watch students from the side pour in when suddenly I realized I was staring at one particular person. He was cute. He was wearing a black beanie and had long black hair. I looked down at his shoes when I recognized them. I quickly look away when I realized we had made eye contact. I could hear him grab a chair and approached me.
"Why are you sitting on the ground?" He asked. I looked up at him a bit shocked that someone would talk to me, a creep who's in a corner who apparently shouldn't be sitting on the ground, who was just staring at him. I shrugged as I stood up. He pushed a chair over to my direction as he walked over towards the back of the room where the percussionists were setting up their drums. I grabbed the chair and sat in the same spot on the floor where I was sitting just a second ago. I look over to where the guy was standing at. He looked familiar, which was weird since I haven't spoken to anyone yet. He was the first one to ever say anything to me. Soon a saw a group of girls walk in and all grabbed chairs against the wall near me. They all were whispering and laugh every now and then. I began to feel self conscious about it. I then heard the final bell rang signaling that it was time for class to begin. I finally see the band director and a lady come in through the door. He was a tall lanky dude with big ears and a small head with glasses. I snickered as a few veteran band members near by shot a glare at me. The lady was pale, short, muscular and had long super dark hair.
"Hello class, my name is Mr Bailey and I will be your teacher." He spoke with a friendly smile.
"My name is Ms. Hurst and I am the colorguard teacher." She spoke in a serious tone. I gulped. She was intimidating already. She noticed me, being the new face in the crowd, I wasn't surprised.
"What's your name?" She asked me, directing everyones attention to me.
"Isabelle." I said a I smiled politely.
"You're with me right?" She asked. I nodded and she smirked. "I'm glad to see you. I heard a lot about you." I nervously smiled and nodded. My mom really needs to stop her bragging. I hear the girls giggling on the side.
"Sadie, Amanda! Knock it off!" Ms Hurst scolded at the girls who were laughing at me. I hope to god they were in the band and not ColorGuard. I cringed at the thought.
Today for band, was a get to know each other and break the ice kind of day. All of us was paired up to work with someone and had to introduce ourselves, tell the person what section we were in and then tell them something interesting about ourselves. Once Mr. Bailey said go, we all scattered, trying to pair up with someone. I avoided all girls since I couldn't stand them. After near the end of class, I somehow ended up with the first person who spoke with me. I was nervous at first, but I needed to break out of my shell.
"Hey!" I said behind him, I didn't get his attention, so I tapped his shoulder, "helloooo?" He turned around.
"Hi!" He said smiling. "Did you need a partner?" I nodded. "Good! Then I claim you!" I laughed as I nodded again.
"Okay! So start off by telling me your name?" I asked as we took a seat.
"My name is Christian, or Chris for short. But a lot of my friends call me CC." He said.
"Well nice to meet you CC! My name is Isabelle." I smiled.
"So what section are you in?" He asked.
"ColorGuard." I spoke. His eyes widen. "What?"
"There are some snobby girls in there. But they're all good at what they do. We always win the auxiliary caption when we compete." He said, glancing over to where Amanda and Sadie was sitting. "Those are the captains. So if you were somehow able to impress them, then that's amazing because they are extremely picky. From the sounds of it, you got lucky since the teacher likes you."
"Pfft.. Impress them? I've been doing this forever." I shrugged. It was true. I've been doing ColorGuard since before junior high.
"I guess you have a better advantage." He chuckled, "in that case, it would be a good thing if you replaced them. They have the worst reputation."
"So what about you?" I asked, "what section are you in?"
"Percussion!" He said with a smile, "I play snare."
"That's awesome! I've always wanted to play in percussion, but I lack coordination." I said laughed.
"And yet you can twirl a flag, while dancing in rhythm with the bands music... Right..." He teased.
CC and I were talking for the rest of class time and soon enough I heard the final bell ring.
"Which lunch do you have?" CC asked. I glanced down at my ID.
"Uhh.. I have second lunch?" I said as he smiled.
"I'll see you then!" He said as he began to walk away and waved goodbye. I nodded. I had my music magnet class, next so I began to walk towards the classroom next door. I've always heard of this program. It's two class hours and you get music theory, piano, guitar and orchestra! It's the whole shabang!
As I walk in, I noticed that there are a few students who were also in band are in here. This classroom was weird. It was loaded with a lot of computer desks and electric piano right beneath it. Soon I recognized a face. I believe he introduced himself as the drum major, but I couldn't remember his name. He also had long black hair but was parted to the side. He was sitting already started on his theory work. I took a seat next to him.
"Hey! You were in band just right now, right?" I asked, hoping to start a convo with him. He glanced at me.
"Yeah." He said before going back to what he was doing. Well that was a nice conversation flow.
"What was your name again?" I asked.
"My name is Jeremy." He responded not looking away from the computer this time. I felt a poke on my shoulder.
"Hey you're in my seat." I turned around to see another guy with short spiky hair and a bit longer in the front. He nodded over at Jeremy when Jeremy finally noticed him.
"Hey Jake!" He said.
"What's up Jinxx," Jinxx? I thought his name was Jeremy? Jake walked over closer to where Jeremy was and started talking. I began to feel awkward and shifted over to the next chair over. Jake saw this and took his seat. I sighed as I began to play in the computer in front of me. The class went by quickly for it being a two hour block and soon enough the bell rang and I was on my way to my fourth class of the day. I had to walk across campus and make my way to my fashion class.

Notes

So yeah.. Here's the first chapter! It's actually not the full chapter, but I cut it in half. Let me think what you think of it so far! Depending on the response, I'll post part 2 later this evening.

For those who don't know what colorguard is, it's the people who dance with Flags, Sabres, and other probs during the marching band half time show! I've been doing it more than 10 years now and always loved it! So this story is going to be based on a lot of real life experiences with marching band and other fun stuff, therefore this story means a lot to me.
