HEART OF FIRE

The Story of a Lonely Girl

“Okay class let’s try again from the top and ready… begin!” The class of 18-19-20 year olds of mixed genders did as their teacher; Mrs Millers instructed and started the dance they had been practicing for almost a week now. In the front row of dancers, 20 year old Sophie Moore smiled to herself inside as she caught a glimpse of her reflection dancing the mirrors. Ever since she had been a little girl, Sophie had dreamed of becoming a professional dancer, and she knew that dream wouldn’t come true unless she practiced and worked extremely hard.

“Very good Sophie,” the teacher said with a warm smile in Sophie’s direction, “Laura, watch your posture, Hannah keep in time please… not bad Jacob, and you aren’t getting as easily distracted this week.” While dance seemed to come rather naturally to Sophie, others had a bit of a problem. “Celia what are you doing? I think after class rehearsals are required again. You too Bethany… nice posture Chloe I’m impressed.”

Yep.

“Okay then class,” Mrs Millers stopped the music, “The bell is about to go… I’m very proud of you all you’re doing very well with this dance I’m pleased. Celia, Bethany, Harry and Joanne I want you to stay the four of you clearly need help and Stephen, Jack and Daniel you three also need to stay as you have detention with me every day for an hour, for the whole week. The rest of you gather your things up and as soon as the bell goes you are all dismissed.”

Sophie went to the back of the room with the rest of her classmates to gather her stuff up. She grabbed her bag and sat in front of one the mirrors. For her part, Sophie considered herself very lucky; she was quite pretty and resembled her mother a great deal. She was of average height with beautiful long platinum blonde hair that reached to the middle of her back, she had wonderful pale blue eyes and skin that one could possibly say was flawless as she’d never had any spots or a rash of any sort in her life.

“Hey Soph, are you okay?”

Sophie was dragged out of her thoughts by her classmate Gemma. “Huh? Oh yeah just lost in thought thanks Gem.” “No problem gal I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Yeah see you tomorrow.” “Bye.”

Sophie returned to looking at her reflection in the mirror. While she got on well with the majority of people in her class she didn’t really consider any of them friends. In fact, Sophie didn’t really feel she had any friends at all. But that was fine by her. After changing from her dance shoes back into her sneakers, Sophie left the dance studio and headed for her locker to collect her books from there.

“Hi Sophie” “Hello” Wherever she went people were always so nice to her, or most people anyway. There were the odd exceptions. Back in High School, a group of girls had always bullied her, calling her names like ugly and stupid and fat. But Sophie had always let it pass her by because she knew what they were saying wasn’t true and her best friend in High School, Natalie, had always reminded her of that. But then High School had finished and Natalie had moved away from California half the way across the world to live in England. Since then Sophie hadn’t really had any real friends.

After collecting what she had needed from her locker, Sophie left the building and headed home. Her house wasn’t too far from the College and she liked to keep fit so she always walked there and back every day. She had once or twice caught the bus but that didn’t happen very often. It took Sophie 20 minutes to get home, sometimes 15 if she walked at a fast pace. As she was nearing her home, she passed a group of young people, dressed in a lot of black who were whispering excitedly together. Sophie managed to catch some of what they were saying.

“Did you hear?” “Yeah it’s all over my Facebook newsfeed!” “My Cousin sent me a text telling me during Math!” “What’s going on?” “BVB are back in the studio! They’re working on their next album!” “What? No way!” “Yes way! I’m so excited!” “Me too I cannot wait!”

Sophie groaned and rolled her eyes, great; she was probably going to get bombarded with this same piece of news from her sister when she got home. Sophie’s 16 year old sister Amber was obsessed with the band, worshiped them in fact. Amber’s room was plastered in posters and drawings that Amber herself had done. It was all Amber ever talked about and it drove Sophie nuts.

When Sophie arrived home she was surprised to see her mom’s car parked in the driveway. Her mom, Karen, worked at a big Chemicals Company and was never home till late. Sophie entered the house with her usual, “Hey, I’m home!” call and her mom’s voice answered from the kitchen, “Hello Soph did you have a nice day?” “I did thank you. Why are you home so early?” “Renovations,” Karen answered her Daughter, “I have tomorrow and Wednesday off.” “Oh that’s great! What’s for tea?” “I’m ordering Chinese is that okay?” “That’s fine you know what I want.” “Sweet and Sour Cantonese Style with Egg Fried Rice, 2 Spring Rolls and a bag of Prawn Crackers?” Sophie giggled, “What else! Love you mom I’ll be in my room!” “I love you too sweetie.”

Sophie made her way upstairs to her room; she could hear her sister’s loud music coming from down the hallway. “No peace when Amber’s home…” Sophie muttered to herself as she entered her all white room. As soon as she had walked in, her Pug, Pugsley, had jumped up from being curled on her bed. “Hey boy,” Sophie dropped her bag on the floor and picked him up. “Did you miss me?”

Pugsley barked and snuggled into Sophie’s embrace. Perhaps she did have a least one friend… after all, dogs are mankind’s best friend. Sophie placed Pugsley back down on the bed and decided to go for a shower. She grabbed a towel and some clean clothes and headed for the bathroom. As she passed her sister’s room the door opened making Sophie jump.

“Jesus Amber!” “Sheesh sorry, I didn’t know you were going to be the other side of the door when I opened it!” “It’s fine do you need the bathroom?” “No why?” “Good… I’m going for a shower. I’m surprised you’re not screaming the news at me…” Amber looked confused, “What news?” “You don’t know?” A look of shock spread over Sophie’s face. “Your band are back in the studio… means a new album sooner or later no?” Amber’s face widened into a huge grin and she let out a huge scream, “OH MY GOD!” If Sophie wasn’t so used to her sister screaming every 5 minutes she swore she’d be deaf by now.

“I take that as a no you didn’t know.” “How did you find out?!” Amber asked curiously. “While walking home I walked past a group of people who were talking about it. I’d have thought you’d have known though.” Amber shook her head, “No, I’ve not been home from school long and you know mom’s rule, no Computer till I’ve done Homework.” “Of course.” “Ahh I’m so excited! This means a new album, and then a tour! This time I intend to get right to the front so I can get right close Andy!”

Sophie rolled her eyes and looked in Amber’s room as Amber skipped off happily down the hallway and downstairs. Poster upon poster covered the wall and every single one of them had that same face on. The face of Andrew Biersack… Black Veil Brides’ Lead Singer.
