The Metalheads

Eavesdropping

Darkness began to settle around us as the bright orange sun was slipping behind the trees and out of sight. We came to a slow stop about a quarter mile from the border, so no one would hear the motorcycle. We hopped off and trekked quietly towards the opaque concrete fence that separated Metal county from the rest of the world.

I scanned the area, trying to find a way to see over the wall without getting caught. An idea came to me as I started to climb the nearest tree.

"What are you doing?" Ashley whispered loudly.

"I'm trying to see what's happening on the other side," I whispered back as I grabbed a thick branch and pulled myself up onto it. On the other side, dozens of police trucks were parked behind a large building that looked like it housed government officials. Turns out I was right. A group of men and women in suits followed a very tall man in a suit into the side of the building. I began to pick up the scent of blood travelling through the air.

"What do you see?" I motioned the guys to join me in the tree. The 2 guys pulled themselves into the tree and sat down next to me. As they looked around, I heard footsteps coming closer to us. I put both of my hands over their mouths and sat as still as I could.

"Hey, did you hear about that girl?" A familiar male voice cut into the silence.

"What girl?" The other voice was also male, but a bit deeper. I strained my ear to listen to the conversation.

"The one who escaped from the prison camp a few months ago. I heard she escaped and led almost everyone in the camp to freedom." Were they talking about me?

"Oh yeah I know who you're talking about. Yeah she helped everyone escape except for a couple of people. I think one of them was like her best friend or something." The other voice cleared his throat.

"Yeah but she was dead long before they escaped." The voices started to laugh. I tried to find where the voices were coming from, but I couldn't see anyone around.

"So sad, right?" The deeper voice said sarcastically. They both broke into deep laughter.

"Oh she has no idea what she's in for. Her and her little friends are about to get squashed and burned." They laughed again.

"Nice going, son. I always knew you would make it up to us." As the footsteps faded away, I saw the shadows of the 2 men, one was tall and buff, the other a little shorter, not as buff, and about 20 years older.

"Is that...Brody?" Andy asked, watching as the 2 men turned around the corner of the building.

"Yes...and his dad was with him." I replied.

"So they're trying to kill us now?" asked Ashley, still trying to process the conversation they had. Memories of prison camp came rushing back to me, but I pushed them out of my head. I didn't want a repeat of what happened earlier.

"So what do we do?" Andy asked, a worried tone in his voice. I re-adjusted my position on the branch, and tried to think of something. Suddenly, I heard the door of a truck open, and I watched Brody and his dad climb into the front seats. I watched the truck pass through the big iron gates and enter Metal county.

"Where are they going?" Ashley asked. I guess he noticed them too. Without saying a word, I jumped out of the tree and ran towards the Harley. Confused, the guys decided to jump out and follow me. I jumped on and started the engine.

"Hurry!" I screamed as we sped away towards my house.

"Why are we following them?" Andy screamed over the sound of the engine. "I have a bad feeling about where they're going." As we pulled into my driveway, the truck was nowhere in sight. I got off the bike and looked around.

"I could have sworn they were coming here." I said, slightly disappointed in myself.

"I don't see them," Andy added. "Well I guess we can go home now," I said, walking towards my front door. The guys followed me inside.

I opened the door slowly, and scanned the area for my dad. Nothing. I didn't really want to come home to a million questions from him about where we went. As we started to make our way upstairs, Andy grabbed my hand and let Ashley move in front of us, like he was about to do something he didn't want Ashley to see.

Before I could ask what was happening, he rested his hands on the back of my head and kissed me, running his fingers through my hair. God...his lips were the most perfect thing ever. He started to gently push me towards the wall as we kissed. He moved his hands from my head to my cheeks, then down to my waist and pulled me to him. Using the wall for support, I wrapped my arms and legs around him, sending a shiver through his body. He kissed me harder, making my stomach flutter. He finally pulled away, and put his forehead against mine.

"I love you," he whispered. A huge smile spread across my face as he picked me up and carried me upstairs.

"I love you too," I whispered.

"Are you camping in my room tonight Ash?" I asked, laughing. He had found blankets and pillows and had made a little pallet for himself on the floor next to my bed. He smiled proudly.

"Yes I am."

I yawned loudly as I walked into the bathroom to change into my pajamas. I quickly washed the makeup off my face, and dried it off with a towel. I didn't really care if they saw me without makeup. Ashley had already seen it plenty of times, and I knew Andy wouldn't care. As I walked back to my room, I stopped outside the door, listening to the their conversation.

"Ash, it's totally okay. All you had to do was tell me dude." What were they talking about?

"I know, I know." Andy sighed.

"How long have you really known her?" Ashley sat down on the pallet he made for himself on the floor.

"Well, I've known her for a couple of years. When I first moved here, she helped us move in and welcomed us and everything. We became really good friends and we've gone to school together ever since I've been here. So when she got chosen to go to that prison camp, I couldn't let her go alone. I begged them to take me too, and they didn't hesitate. We stayed together the whole time." Andy was a little shocked, trying to process everything that Ashley had just told him.

"So I guess you could say we've been through a lot together."

Andy nodded. "Yeah, seems like it."

I smiled. Ashley was right. He had stayed with me through the whole thing, he never left my side. I was extremely grateful for him.

Suddenly, we heard a gunshot outside my house. And I jumped.

"What was that?" I scurried over to the window, with Andy and Ashley at my side. There was a big blue police truck outside Andy's house, and someone was being shoved into the backseat.

"Mom!" Andy ran as fast as he could downstairs and out the door into the street. Me and Ashley followed.

"What are you doing to my mom?!" Andy's dad quickly came outside seeing what was happening.

"Amy! No! Let go of my wife!" The police officers continued to shove Mrs. Biersack into the truck, ignoring her screaming.

Andy tried to attack one of the officers. I could see the hatred in his eyes as he punched and kicked. If he didn't stop, they were going to shove him in the truck with her. I grabbed him by his arm and tried to pull him away. One of the officers, who looked very familiar, took out his gun and pointed it at Andy's head. We both froze.

"Don't you even dare," I warned the officer. Andy was out of breath, I could feel his breath down my neck. Then I realized who the officer was. He was Brody's dad. I knew they had come in here.

"Don't hurt them. Get her out, and leave them alone. They didn't do anything to you." He glared back at me.

"I wouldn't try anything little girl." He smirked as someone with a larger gun in hand came up from behind the truck. It was Brody.
