The Metalheads

And We Will End What We've Begun

I sprinted as fast as I could to the stadium that was still partly under construction. The armies hadn't gotten there yet, which bought me some time. I had to get rid of this mega bomb before it destroyed the entire county and everyone in it.

I stopped in the dead center of it, and looked around. The explosives could be in the seats, under the stage, virtually anywhere.

"The only way I can save these people," I thought out loud. "Is to prevent them from coming here at all."

As I started to think of a plan, I heard an eerie familiar voice boom over the newly installed intercom.

"And you really think you can do that?" sneered President Black.

I couldn't figure out where he was. His voice had come from everywhere at once. I tried not to let him get in my head and distract me.

"You can bring a crowd together Katherine, but you can't stop a crowd," he mocked.

That's when an idea popped into my head. If I find a way to blow up the stadium now while it's empty, no one will get hurt.

I ran as fast as I could to the nearest home and frantically knocked on the door. A white haired elderly woman answered the door, equipped with hearing aids and a walker.

"Can I help you?" asked the woman.

"Yes, do you...have any...matches?" I stuttered, out of breath.

She looked down at my boots and thought for a minute. Then she raised her head suddenly, as if she had just come up with a great idea.

"I'll be right back," she said, slowly closing the door, leaving me again in silence.

I waited at least five minutes. I was growing impatient, but she moved slow. Finally after what seemed like forever, she opened up the door again and handed me a box of matches.

"Here you go," she replied, her voice cracking on the first word.

I jumped with relief and shouted a thank you over my shoulder before darting back to the stadium, passing an abandoned store on my way to grab a few cans of gasoline.

The store was a commonplace for me and Ashley, before it closed and before Andy came along. Seeing it reminded me of how much things had changed since Andy moved here. So much had happened in a few months.

The armies were moving closer now, which meant I didn't have much time. I set the cans of gas and the matches down so I could focus. Suddenly, his voice boomed over the intercom again, startling me.

"It will never work Katherine. Just give up already."

That's when I saw him. Anger flooded through every vein in my body. I knew as soon as I saw him again, I had to kill him. President Black stood in the press box watching me, and I climbed as high as I could in the seats, and lunged for him, shattering the glass window. Shards flew over both of us, with one catching just under my left eye. I ignored it and pressed towards the dictator, forgetting all about the gas and matches.

"I have had it with you," I began, getting in his face for emphasis. I pulled out my dagger, and held it to his throat.

"You agree to end the wrath you've put on my people, and I'll end this war," I hissed.

He laughed, his body shuttering underneath me. "Darling, do you really think that I will surrender that easily?"

I pushed the knife closer to him, close to breaking the skin.

"You blow up this stadium with my people in it, and I will burn the heart out of you, or what's left at least," I said, smirking.

He smiled, then lurched at me, tossing the dagger away from me. I reached for it, but he pounced on me, pinning me to the ground.

"No, I have had it with you," he snarled, picking me up and throwing me across the room.

I hit the wall with a thud and I groaned when I hit the ground. He charged me again, with a snake-like look in his eyes and a huge devious grin, he was really enjoying the fight.

Before he could reach me, I slid past him just in time, and kicked his legs out from under him, sending him down. I jumped up and once again retrieved my dagger.

I looked out at the crowd of mixed soldiers nearing the stadium. Catching me off guard, President Black grabbed me from behind and throwing me around again. This time I had lost my strength. My vision blurred and my hearing limited to only the sound of his voice.

"You're out of time, my dear. It looks like you can't save your people after all," he grinned, hovering over me, waving a red button over my face.

That's when I got another idea. My hearing and vision had gone back to normal, and I could hear the cries of the soldiers who were now entering the stadium.

President Black strutted over to the microphone, and each soldier stopped fighting when they heard his voice over the intercom.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I appreciate you all joining us today. This fine evening, I will have the joy and satisfaction of watching you all scream as I blow you all sky high," he laughed.

What is this, some kind of freak show?

As he laughed, I could see the snake-like look in his eyes grow more intense. Wait, I had seen that look before. Why did it seem so familiar? Was it...

"Dad?" I asked cautiously, realizing how blind I had been this whole time.

He turned to look at me with a glint of sorrow in his eyes. I stared at him with wide eyes.

"How could I have not noticed this entire time?" I asked out loud, smacking my forehead.

"Sweetie, I'm sorry," he said, forgetting he still had the microphone in his hand.

The crowd below us looked up in confusion. It was as if he was one person one second, then a completely different person the next. He ran his fingers through his slicked back hair, loosening some of the black dye.

I couldn't stop staring at him. I was nearly speechless. "Why?"

He did nothing but shake his head. I took the microphone from him.

"Why would you do this to me, Dad? Did you really hate me that much?" I asked, pointing the microphone in his direction for an answer.

He couldn't say anything. He took a deep breath, and suddenly his demeanor changed back into President Black.

"I don't hate you darling. I'm just doing what is best for mankind," he said, picking up the button once again and standing on the table next to the shattered window, inches away from instant death.

"I'm ridding this world of rebels forever, so that no source of power will ever have to deal with treason again," he said, placing his finger on the button.

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see my two best friends climbing the stairs to the press box, coming to make a last effort to save our people. I smirked, getting an idea.

"Wait," I began. "Please don't do it Dad, please. Do you really want to kill all of these people in cold blood?" I continued, buying the boys a little time.

Before he could reply, Andy and Ashley burst through the door with guns in hand, taking President Black by surprise.

"Put the button down, or we'll shoot," Ashley threatened. Andy pressed closer, bringing his gun straight to his face.

President Black smiled, his snake eyes glistening. "You won't kill me," he laughed. With one swift motion, he knocked the guns from the hands of both of them, pulled me into a headlock and held his own gun to my head.

"But I will kill her," he hissed. He cocked his gun, sweeping the loose hairs out of my face.

I tried to loosen his grip from my neck, but it was no use. He was stronger than me, smarter than me, and he was going to kill me this time.

This is it, I thought. I am finally going to die.

There was no switching back to my dad now. President Black was stuck. I could feel him reposition his finger on the trigger.

The crowd below us broke their silence with individual conversations. They seemed to be watching everything. I noticed the camera in the top right corner of the room. It was probably connected to the big screen.

"I hope you know dad, you have an audience," I said.

He looked up, realizing that he had witnesses, and shrugged. It didn't seem to bother him that he was about to kill me in front of thousands of people.

In a flash, Andy jumped up and charged him, knocking him us all out of the window. I screamed, and in a split second, Andy caught me and grabbed the edge of the window, letting President Black fall 50 feet down to the seats below as his people watched their leader die before their eyes.

My heart raced as Andy hugged me to him, his pulse matching the speed of mine.

"I'm not gonna let you die," he whispered, before kissing me like he never had before. And in that moment that we hung suspended from the press box window, I had never loved him more.

Ashley helped us up, and I looked down at my father, who was stiff and cold. I couldn't believe he had betrayed me, and everything I had lived for. I could spend a life time trying to solve the mystery, but now I had something more important to do.

As we made our way down to the crowd of soldiers, I gazed over all of them. I couldn't have been more proud of my army. I glanced at the two men standing on either side of me, and I hugged them both before beginning my final speech.

"Now, this has been a brutal fight, I know. But now, we all know what we have to do," I began as I looked out at all of them, each person returning the smile I gave them.

"Now, let's regain the power that's been taken from us, and we will end what we've begun."
