Far And Away.

The Secret of The Mortician's Daughter

The entire hallway smelled like delicious pumpkin, cooking turkey and just all of the comfort foods that made Flora's mouth water. It was Thanksgiving day and she and her mother were currently holding two serving plates each as they stood outside the Biersack's door. Amy had invited them over and Flora had begged her mother to say yes. Usually this day was a quiet affair in their house with a small table setup with which ever takeout food the two girls wanted to feast on. Flora's mother wasn't a huge Holiday person-she said it was because Holidays were setup by huge corporations to make money, but Flora knew differently.

Before they had moved into this condo, Flora, her mother and father lived in a wonderful house, which was actually right around the corner from the guys practice space. This house had been everything to Flora's mother-she cleaned it and decorated it for each Holiday. Thanksgiving there would always be large tapered orange candles all around, centerpieces that her mother made herself out of straw, fake flowers and fruit and then there was the food. Mountains of food would line their counters and all of their family and friends would come over and feast for hours.

Then her father left and her mother stopped celebrating...well anything besides Flora.

"I can't believe you are making me do this Florence." Her mother said as she knocked on the door, the plate of mashed potatoes threatening to spill down her red and golden yellow dress. Flora only smiled, her heavily lined eyes filled with glee. Payback.

"Yeah and I remember saying something similar to you the first time you dragged me over here." She quipped and her mother opened her mouth to say something, but the door popped open.

"Oh! Let me help! Andy?!" It was Amy, all smiles and blue eyes and Flora felt like she was looking at Andy. He looked so much like his mother-her eyes and that wide smile he showed occasionally that went from ear to ear.

"What?! Oh...hey Flor." He said as he came running towards the door, skidding across the floor as he had yet to put a shirt or shoes on. Flora stood there speechless as she looked at Andy's bare torso that was dotted with tattoos.

Flora knew Andy had tattoos, she had seen the few that were on his lower arms, but his left arm had a lot more on it that she thought. The one that stood out to her was a small girl-it looked rather knew, probably less than a year old-who was wearing a red lacey dress and held a pair of scissors in her hands. Underneath were two words in large swirling letters and Flora felt confused. The Mortician's Daughter? Wasn't that a song of theirs? Flora had sat in on two practices and the guys had gone over their entire song list, except for that song. Why? Was there something that Andy was keeping from her?

"Hey yourself, oh thanks." She said as Andy reached out and took the pumpkin pie from her arms. Flora noticed that Andy didn't seem as happy to see her-like he did when they first met.

What the fuck?

"I'm gonna put this in the kitchen and finish getting dressed." He said to his mother and Amy only nodded as she nodded for Flora and her mother to come inside.

The house had been completely unpacked at this point and Flora could appreciate the difference between the two homes. Her own house was messy and lived in-the couches were old and worn with paint splotches on them from her mother. Their walls were bright and colorful-her mother loved bright and colorful things. The Biersack house was still really nice, but the furniture was newer, the tables didn't have chunks missing from them and there were decorative touches all around. Flora stopped at a small table in the hallway on the way to the kitchen, there were pictures there and she couldn't help but smile.

A young Andy, dressed like Frankenstein for Halloween, an older Andy with heavy eyeliner and a skinny black tie on with a guitar in his hands and finally what looked to be a sixteen year old Andy with his arms around a very pretty girl. His hair was longer, but not as long as it was now and so Flora knew it was atleast from a year ago. He had on a bluish plaid shirt and his lip was twice pierced, something he had gotten rid of since then. He looked like the same Andy she knew and cared about, but the girl...she was a whole different story. Long and gorgeous auburn hair framed a delicate yet pouty face, and a pair of haunting green eyes smiled for the camera. Andy had his arms around this girl and he was looking at her instead of the camera, with a loving and adoring look in his eyes.

"That's Scout." Someone said from behind her and Flora only whipped around, almost knocking Amy to the floor. She tried to hide the shock that filled her gut, but Flora couldn't help but wonder why Andy hadn't mentioned a girlfriend before.

"Oh...a friend?" Flora said, her voice soft and Amy only nodded, sighing as she patted Flora on the shoulder a retreated back in to the kitchen.

Where was Andy? Flora needed answers and so quietly she snuck down the back hallway, walking towards the only shut door in the house-Andy's. She could hear music blasting from behind the door and so she knew he was in there, but why was he hiding? Flora knocked on the door-twice-but there was no answer and so she softly pushed it open and looked around. Andy had obviously lovingly hung up all of his favorite posters as the walls were lined with them and his small bed held a Batman comforter. Flora smiled as she looked around. Her eyes finally zeroed in on the person she had been looking for.

Andy was now fully clothed in a deep blue v-neck shirt and he had on his boots, but he was bent over a small dresser with an eyeliner pencil near his eye. He didn't know she was there and nearly jumped when she approached him, spinning around and smiling softly at her. He wasn't in the greatest mood today, but seeing Flora there in her soft mossy green sweater made Andy's heart fill. But then she asked him the one question he was hoping he would never hear and Andy felt like his world was going to fall apart.

"Andy? Who's Scout?"

Comments

I hate the fact that Flora let her dad get in her head. Had it not been for him, I'm sure she would be going to California with the band right now. Ohio State really isn't a big deal as far as schools go, and the school in California is just as prestigious (if not more so). Even from a more logical and practical standpoint, it does not seem like Flora is making a good choice.
