The Family Man

It was Mother’s Day and I was standing alone in our bathroom. My period was late, and I had just taken the pregnancy test. I was sitting on the edge of the tub, waiting. I really hoped that I was pregnant again. I was also really scared of being pregnant again; after what happened last time.
I checked my watch; it was time to see the answer. I picked it up and it said positive. I couldn’t believe it. Under the positive sign, it said three weeks. I let out a huge breath that I didn’t even realize I had been holding. I got up quickly and ran into our bedroom.
I climbed onto the bed, straddling a still sleeping Ashley. “Wake up Ashley.” I said, giving him a kiss.
“Morning Belle, Happy Mother’s Day.” He said in a sleepy voice.
“Look!” I handed him the test. I was so excited I thought I might explode.
He looked at the test, and then up at me. “Really?” He asked.
“Mhmm.” I nodded vigorously.
“Belle, that’s amazing!” He pulled me down to him and kissed me passionately.
I heard a small cough. I looked up to see the twins standing in our doorway. “We made breakfast for you Mommy.” Samantha said.
“You did?”
“Yes, toast with waffles and orange juice.” Jack replied.
“That’s so sweet. I’ll be down in a minute.” I said, climbing off of Ashley.
“Should we tell them?” He asked.
I looked at the floor nervously. “Could we wait a few weeks?” I asked as I headed for the door.
“You’re that nervous?”
I nodded.
“Belle, everything’s going to be fine.” He said, pulling me into a hug.
“I know.” I whispered.
I took his hand and we headed down to the breakfast that the twins had made.

I was over at Juliet and Andy’s place. I really needed someone to talk to about this, and as good as Ashley was, he wouldn’t get it. I picked up Wayne and held him in my arms.
“Are you getting any sleep yet?” I asked.
Juliet looked at me with a weary smile. “A little. I’m getting better at sleeping when he sleeps. So three and four hour spurts. He really likes attention.”
“Isn’t Andy helping?”
“Oh yeah, that’s when I get the four hours. Sometimes if I’m lucky I can get six.” It was that moment when Wayne decided to cry. “Here, give him to me. He needs to be fed.” She pulled down her loose top and he latched on to her breast immediately. “So what was it you wanted to talk to me about?”
“I’m pregnant again.” I said.
“Belle that’s amazing!” She said. “How did Ashley react?”
“He’s over the moon.” I replied, looking down at my hands.
“But you’re not?” She said quietly.
“NO! I am, really. I can’t wait to have another kid. I’m just absolutely terrified at the same time.” My eyes started to tear up at the memory of my last pregnancy. I quickly wiped my eyes, determined not to cry.
Juliet stood up and placed Wayne in his crib. “Well that’s understandable, you went through a lot at the beginning of the year.”
“How do I get past it though? Ever since I found out, I’ve been walking on egg shells.” I replied sadly.
“You’ll get through this Belle, I know it. Pretty soon you’ll be too happy to even think about being worried.” She said.
“And if that doesn’t happen?” I went to her, looking over at Wayne, sleeping in his crib.
“Then it will become my mission to make it happen.” She said determinedly. “This is a great thing Belle. Something to be happy about.”
I laughed quietly at her determined face. “All right, if you say so.”
