Aftermath
Juliet’s POV:
It has been a little over a week since Belle miscarried. After a couple of days of observation, the doctors let her go home. I decided I should check up on her today, she hasn’t been answering her phone and I’ve gotten a little worried. I walked up to the door and rang the bell.
“Who is it?” I heard from the other side. It was Jack. Shouldn’t he and Samantha be in school right now?
“It’s Aunt Juliet.” I said.
I heard the lock click and he opened the door. I walked in to see him standing there quietly, looking at the floor.
“Jack is something wrong?”
“Mommy won’t come out of her room.” He replied.
“She won’t?”
He shook his head no.
“How long has she been in there?” I asked.
“I think it’s been a week.” He said.
I was shocked. I knelt down to his level, lifting his chin to look at me. “She hasn’t come out once?”
He shook his head. “We ask her to, but she just says to go away.”
“Have you two eaten at all?” I asked.
He nodded. “Cereal, PB and J, mac and cheese.”
I nodded, all simple things to make. “You haven’t been to school either have you?”
“No.” He said quietly.
“I’m going to go talk to your Mommy.” I said, heading for the stairs. I walked up to Belle and Ashley’s room and knocked on the door. “Belle? You in there?”
There was silence.
“Belle?” I tried the door, but it was locked.
“Go away.” She finally said. “I want to be left alone.”
“What about Jack and Samantha? They need you.” I tried.
“I just want to be alone.” She said again.
I didn’t think I was going to get anywhere with her at the moment, so I went back downstairs. I found Samantha and Jack sitting in the living room. They were cuddled together and looked scared. I couldn’t leave them here. With Belle the way she was, they might as well be alone in the house. So I decided I would take them with me.
“How would you two like to come stay with me for a while?” I asked.
Samantha jumped off the couch and ran at me, hugging my legs. “Yes!” She almost screamed.
I hugged her back. It made me sad to see how happy she was to leave her own home. Jack got off the couch and walked over, taking my hand.
“All right then, let’s go.” I led them to their room to pack some clothes. Once that was done I drove them to my place.
It was late and I had just put them to bed in our spare bedroom. Now I had to do the hard part, call Ashley and let him know where his children were and why.
“Hello?”
“Ashley.” I said.
“Has something else happened?” He asked.
“You might say that.” I replied. “Belle isn’t acting herself. She won’t come out of your room and the twins have been virtually on their own for almost a week.”
“What?”
“How did you not know about this? Don’t you call them?” I asked.
“Yeah, I usually do, but things have been crazy the last couple of days. I was actually gonna call them tonight. Finally got a few hours to myself.”
I sighed, the strains and limitations that came with touring. I knew them well. “Well, you don’t have to worry about them. I have them with me at my place.”
“Thank you Juliet.” He said. “What do you think is wrong with Belle?” He sounded really worried.
“If I had to guess, I would say that she’s depressed. Probably because of losing the baby.” It was what made the most sense. I couldn’t think of any other reason why Belle would be acting this way.
“I wish I could come home and see her.” He said dejectedly.
“I know. Ella and I will keep an eye on her and try to help her.”
“Thanks.”
“Look, it’s getting late. I’ll call you every couple of days to let you know how they’re doing.”
“All right. You’re the best Juliet.”
“Thanks, good night Ashley.” I hung up the phone and went to bed.
