The Black Veil Bride To Be

Coffin

Amelie’s POV

I held my phone in my hand for the longest time, scanning over the texts Andy and I had sent to
each other. Yes, I am a bit crazy. You have to be when you live with someone as anti-heretic as my mother. I walked down the stairs to the foyer, I slipped into the dining room and lingered in the kitchen doorway, watching my mother do the dishes, “I’m going for a walk,” I told her,
“Where?” she asked setting down the plate in the sink, her voice rather monotonous.
“Just to the park,”
She sighed deeply, “be back before ten o’clock,” she whispered.

Mental note, stay out as late as I want as long as I get up for school, got it! I grabbed my coat, my cigarettes and my lighter before shoving myself out the door before my mother could change her mind. The air was calm, much warmer than it was earlier. It was odd but nice.
My steps felt lighter as I hurried across town to Oak Park to meet Andy. The clock on the corner of main street chimed 6:45 PM.
Upon arriving at the park I seated myself upon a hard, wooden bench. Now, all I had to do was wait.

Andy’s POV

I awoke to the sound of my phone buzzing, five texts from Amelie.
“Hey, I’m here,”
“You coming?”
“Where are you?”
“Hello?”
“I guess I’ll go home then…”
The time was 8:03 PM and the last text was sent at 7:55 PM. Shit! I hope I’m not too late! I changed out of my church clothes that I had napped in and pulled on some torn, black skinny jeans and a shirt with my leather jacket.

I hopped out of my room on one foot, trying desperately to tie my sneakers while leaving,
“Andrew, where are you going?” asked my mom,
“To the park,” I said trying to get my shoes tied,
“Oh, okay, be home before ten o’clock,” said my dad.

I ran out the door as fast as I could to the park, I hope Amelie wasn’t mad. I felt so awful for not being able to wake up in time! I came closer and closer to the park, looking around for Amelie immediately upon my arrival. One of the benches was tattered with cigarette butts and they were fresh. I picked a direction and began running, “Amelie!” I shouted, “Amelie!”
I began running toward downtown, “Amelie!”

I hope she’s not stupid enough to be walking on this side of town by herself after dark.
“Hey!” screamed a familiar voice, “get away!” It was Amelie! I ran as fast as my legs could carry towards the sounds of struggle; down the street to find a circumference of thugs around an item of interest.
“You shouldn’t be out after dark little girl,” chuckled one of the men, huskily; he was tall with olive skin, dark hair, a flat-brimmed hat and a goatee “you don’t wanna know what happens to babies like you after dark but we’re gonna show you anyway,”
“No!” she screamed,
“HEY!” I shouted, the plethora turned to face me, “leave her alone!” I growled,
“Beat it, pencil neck,” said the one man, “this doesn’t concern you,”
“Oh I beg to differ, prison-bitch,” I said approaching him; chest puffed out and ready to fight if necessary, “go back to your prison-wife, Bubba, I’m sure he’s missing a good mowing,”
“Why you little punk!” he reached into his pocket to grab something but out of reflex I socked him right across the face, sending him down on his hands and knees. While he was down, I pushed past the circling and grabbed Amelie’s hand, “run!” I said leading the way, “don’t let that punk and that bitch get away!” I heard him yell.

My heart was pounding in my ears as panic set in; what to do? Where to run? I thought.
“Wait,” Amelie stopped, turning her head in all directions, “I know where we are! This way!” she shouted as she was now leading me to our soughtful sanctuary.
Around a back alley way, jumping over chain-link fence we ended up in none other than the playground out behind the church.”They’re over here!” one of them called out, we had been found!

“Hurry,” Amelie commanded, “inside!” she pulled the back door open ran down the stairwell to the basement. It was dark and creepy, like something from the 60’s had thrown up and died in here. We could hear back door open and close, followed by the pitter-patter of sneakers against tile flooring, “half of you go up stairs, the rest come with me to the basement, I want them found!”

“What do we do?” I asked panicked,
“Follow me, quick but stay quiet,” she took my hand as we dashed swiftly through the basement till we came to another room, she opened the door and the smell of death and formaldehyde came to my mind as she shut the door behind us, “what’s that smell?” I gagged,
“it’s where they keep the bodies for the wakes,”
“bodies?” I gasped, “you’ve got to be kidding,”

Around us were at least a dozen coffins waiting to be filled with the bodies of the following day and on the other side was a cold, metal wall which confined the bodies to keep the fresh, like a fridge; oh God...
“C’mon, quickly,” she said opening one of the coffins and climbing in, “get in!” I could hear them coming closer to the room, I had no choice. I had to get into the coffin with her...let’s hope I don’t make this my own to stay in for all eternity.
