The Fallen Angel

Chapter 2
Buzz, buzz went my phone in my pocket. I groaned in complaint. My phone was constantly going at the wrong times school tests, serious situations, church. Jen was trying to call me, jeez what did she want in the middle of the night. I put my phone on silent and tried to go back to sleep. I could hear Gavin talking loudly to mum, no respect to the concept of a good night’s sleep. I got up and started to go down stairs to tell them to shut the hell up and what argument would they be having at this time of night.
“How am I going to tell Juliet?” whispers my mum stopping me dead in my tracks. I back track up to the top of the stairs where I can hear them but there is no risk of me being caught eavesdropping. “Well ya gotta tell her some time,” grumbles Gavin. I can hear that he is drunk by the way his voice is so slow. “Okay, ya want me to tell her?” he asks. I give up, I want to know what they are talking about so I go down stairs and enter the kitchen. Gavin is sitting on a chair looking like he is having a hangover and mum is standing next to him in her pale pink night dress. This makes me feel very uncomfortable and I can see the surprise on my mum’s face.
“Juliet? You’re up early,” she says startled and I can see she is hoping I didn’t just hear the conversation her and Gavin just had. “Mum, spill it,” I snap. She looks very vulnerable and the way she sucks in a breath before she talks lets me know she is prepared for a lot of shouting. “Sweetie, I’m kind of… I’m… I’m pregnant,” she stutters. I feel like my heart as just stopped. I glare at Gavin. “Mum,” I say trying to control my anger. “Julie please don’t be upset at me,” sobbed mum pleadingly. But it was not mum I was upset at. “Who exactly is the um… father,” I say slowly but very deadly. Gavin doesn’t sense my anger and laughs. “Who would you expect it to be?” Gain asks.
That was it I had had enough of this calmness. I turn on Gavin immediately. “YOU DARE PUT YOUR FILTHY HANDS ON MY MOTHER!” I scream and punch Gavin on the side of his head sending him crashing to the ground. “Juliet!” cries my mum. Gavin gets up and picks up an empty beer bottle throwing it at my head. I dodge it but Gavin isn’t done yet he launches himself at me pinning me to the ground and landing fist after fist in my face. I pull my fists out and punch him in the face once. While he is startled I pull out my legs and kick him back off me.
Gavin tries to go at me a second time but my mum leaps in the way. “Gavin stop!” she cries. I can see the tears streaming down her face. This was not the worst Gavin had ever done to me but it was the first time he’d hurt me in front of my mum. I bet she thought that he’d only ever hurt her.
My head felt like it weighed a tone and blood ran down my arms. Mum turned to me sobbing taking my face in her hands. “Sweetie, are you okay?” she asks. Of course I wasn’t! but I couldn’t say anything because my face hurt too much. The last thing I remember before passing out is mum shouting at Gavin and him laughing horribly at her anger.
