Sink Your Teeth Into Forever

Chapter 27

Sandra's POV
“We have to warn them somehow,” I said worry for the rest of the band brimming over the edge of my conscious. I was sitting on the edge of the couch next to Ashley. He was awake and doing better than he had been even an hour before. Jerome sat across the room in a chair rubbing his chin.
“I know but I can't think of how. I've already sent men to talk to them, but I worry that my men will be attacked,” Jerome said. I sighed, obviously there was no phone service out here. No Internet either, I know tragic right? Even though I had my phone and their phone numbers there was no way for me to call ahead in warning.
“When is there going to be another full moon?” Ashley chimed in.
“ I believe it's tonight,” Jerome said, “Why?”
“If I can be a wolf at the same time that they are, then I may not be able to communicate in direct words, because of the distance, but I could try and get a basic idea across,” Ashley suggested. Jerome stared at him in wonder.
“Would you be at all willing to let some of our researchers watch you when you transform, or doctors look at your wolf form?” Jerome said, looking extremely excited at the thought of Ashley changing from a human into an animal. Ash shrugged.
“I don't see why not. Though you probably don't know that I need to eat on the full moon or I'll starve in my human form,” Ash explained. I watched Jerome's face turn to amazement. He leaned forward like a child listening to an intense story, his eyes grew wide. His mouth opened slightly.
“We'll make sure to get large amounts of meat out there for you so that you can eat. Will that be alright?”
“Yeah, and get as much as you can, I eat a lot,” Ash said with a little smirk. I could tell that he was enjoying the fact that this man was so fascinated by him. Always a lover of attention. Jerome was still staring at Ash like he was looking upon god himself.
“Ash are you going to be strong enough to transform and not get too worn down because of it?” I asked, as he was still quite sick.
“I'm feeling much better, and although it may be a bit of a struggle I think that I can handle it,” Ash replied.
***************
A group of scientists stood outside of our beach house just off the porch. The sun was nearly gone and the full moon was casting it's cool glow along the beach. The scientists talked amongst themselves. There was a static of both excitement and anxiety in the air. As they had no idea what Ash would be like in his other form. I felt the same way as I stood out there with them. Waiting for Ash to bring himself out onto the porch. There was a large open crate filled with choice meats so that Ashley could eat as much as he desired. More was on call if he needed it. I wondered why he was taking so long to come out. Perhaps he was waiting for the sun to completely go down. Or maybe he was just building the suspense for a more dramatic affect when he finally did come out. Just as the sun was saying it's last goodbye the door of the house creaked open. Ash stepped through the glowing doorway and the scientists fell silent in observing him. He was still human. He came out on to the porch and you could here nothing but everyone's excited breathing. He wore nothing but his skinny jeans, and only walked with a slight limp, but I could see it in his face that he was trying to hide pain.
“Now I need everyone to pay really close attention because this is going to happen really fast. As soon as I touch the moonlight the transformation will take about half a second,” Ash said looking around at the star struck crowd. He took two steps back into the doorway and then in three massive steps that ended in a leap he jumped into the silvery light.
The sound that he made was horrific. He screamed in pain for one thing, but another sound was that of his skin tearing. The wolf erupted from inside Ash and the person that I new seemed to be sucked to the inside. He it the ground with a heavy thud. When he stood up for a moment there was a scary and wild look in his eye like he was truly going to eat all of us. Then he closed his eyes as he straightened up and when he looked around again his eyes had cleared. I must have looked utterly terrified because when he saw me his ears went back and he tilted his head to the side. His tail wagged just a bit and he came up to me slowly and bumped his nose into my forehead. I caught my breath. The scientists directly next to me watched him in awe while others were furiously scribbling down notes on their note pads.
“Hi Ash,” I said putting my hand in the fur on his neck. It was thick, warm and soft, he rumbled in enjoyment as I rubbed his neck and ears.
“Are you hungry?” I asked him, and at the thought of food he perked up and wagged his tail faster. I began to walk down the row of scientists and they watched as we passed. Ash's feet caused dust from the path to swirl around us. I put my hand on his fur while we walked. When we reached the crate of food the chef's next to it backed up. Ash leaned over and began to eat. AS he ate some of the scientists began to get closer, perhaps to observe him better. He was halfway through the crate in about ten minutes. Not long after that he was done, sitting up and smacking his chops.
“I-is it alright if I take some blood from him?” One of the men surrounding us asked. I looked at Ash and he seemed to nod.
“He understands us still,” The researchers all mumbled in amazement. Ash laid down and allowed the man to take blood from him. From there people started to get braver. They came forward and looked at him, touched his fur. Measured the size of his paws, one even plucked out a hair. At that Ash seemed rather displeased but he didn't even growl. I was amazed at how well he was tolerating all of this. If a ton of people we poking and prodding at me like that I would probably freak out. They looked at how his wounds had healed. One man asked Ash to see his teeth, so Ash stretched his jaw wide open revealing rows of razor sharp canines with meat still stuck to them. People looked in his eyes ears and nose. It was like he had a thousand physicals getting done all at once. Finally it was ended.
“Okay folks we can continue this another day, he still has to try and get in contact with his pack,” Jerome said. The scientists back up and Ashley stood. His nose lifted to the moon and a long low wail that made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up drifted from his muzzle. I butiful yet terrifying sound, from a beautiful yet terrifying creature.
