Sink Your Teeth Into Forever

Chapter 2

I tilted my nose to the sky and inhaled deeply. A fresh green scent pushed through the rest of the dirty stink created by the pollution of the city. It was a relief to smell something real and not man-made, although it was probably a park, it was probably a big one, I could tell by the strength of the scent.
"Park, not far, a mile or two away, big enough for us to find a deer to take down," I reported directly to Andy.
"Good we'll go there," he responded. We may have been joking around before but now we're all business it was time for a hunt. Andy took off in the direction of the scent and we fell into place beside him, a shape much like birds flying south for the winter. I was to his right, Jinxx to his left, CC just behind me to my right, and Jake to Jinxx's left and just behind him. It was a natural order of rank, we didn't treat each other necessarily different by rank, at least not on purpose, but any passing pack would know who's who just by looking, even if we weren't in any sort of formation. Andy was obviously the leader, mostly because of his color difference from the rest of us. He was white a stark contrast to the rest of us, also his blue eyes set him apart. I mean Jinxx's eyes are blue but they come no where close to Andy's.
We kept to the shadows as we ran, not needing another run in with a human, fortunately it was late and we didn't see anyone. Oh, and I was right the park huge, must be enough deer here to feed us for years, but we only need enough for one night.
As we entered the woods hunting instinct took over, we knew what everyone else was thinking, without communicating it directly. Andy went off to find a place to make the kill, Jinxx and CC followed him, to help corral the prey. Jake and I headed off into the woods to lead our victim into into the trap. I smelled fear and heard an increased heart beat, a dull thudding that was not one of our own. Jake and I slunk through the woods damp leaves sliding across our fur, finally I saw the prey in a shaded, but clear area of woods, probably some sort of trail. It was a big buck, ears pricked, nose twitching, eyes wide, it knew we were there, that was a good thing, it would run. With a roar Jake pounced from the foliage, in an instant we gave chase. Weaving in and out of trees, it was to scared to realize we were leading it straight into a trap, straight to our brothers.
Somehow we telepathically knew where they were, a large clearing with a rather large, and rather random boulder in the center of it. That's were the kill would be made. I snapped at the deer's ankles making it run faster, I was hungry, and I knew the rest of us were too. We broke into the clearing, moonlight splashed onto us making us stronger. Jinxx and CC broke from the sides of the clearing, and started to lead the deer right where we wanted it. The pounding of hooves let us feel the movements of the deer and it's scent was overpowering, coupled with sight we could sense every single panicked move that it made. The boulder was getting nearer, and I was getting out of breath, the lack of food wasn't helping.
The deer made a break for an exit, as we were closing in quickly, but CC jumped in front of it, a snarl ripping up through his chest. The deer turned, I saw the look of pure horror on it's face and suddenly the human side of me took over for just a split second. I felt bad for the poor thing, it never had a glint of a chance against us. I personally loved animals, being the owner of two dogs and a horse, I hated seeing animals in pain, I hoped Andy would finish it quickly. My wish was granted.
The deer wheeled and sprinted to the boulder, the last mistake it would ever make. Andy sprung from the boulder, his white fur glowing in the moonlight. He landed squarely on the deer's back, biting it's spinal cord. It was dead before it knew what had happened. Andy looked to the sky and let out a long low howl, we joined. He looked at me for a moment, perhaps he'd felt my guilt for killing, but then the instinct for food took over and all sympathy was gone, I was hungry. At the end of the day that's what everyone cares about, their own needs. We dug in.
I know what you're thinking, one deer, for five horrifyingly massive wolves. Why do you think we're all so skinny. It's enough to fill our bellies to the point where we don't want to run back to the bus. My brain was drowsy, the walk back seemed shorter, probably because I was basically sleep walking. I don't remember much of the walk back, except for the fact that I kept bumping into Jake. I'm not sure if he even noticed.
We got back to the bus and Andy started pawing at the door and whining to be let in, much like an annoying house dog. Finally the scratching must have been annoying enough because our tour manager, the wonderful John opened the door of the bus to let us in. He's one of the few humans who knows our secret, he handled it quite well the first time he found out, but that's a story for later.
I dragged myself onto a couch and was asleep before the rest of the pack was even in the door.
