Living the Dream

Protest

*Dr Brennan's POV*

"CODE TRAUMA NOW!" resounds throughout the department on the overhead pager. Krystal was going into Cardio and Respiratory Arrest. MD Attending, MD Resident, OR Residents, Respiratory Specialists, Nurses and Emergency Service Assistants hastily arrive in Krystal’s room ready for the transfer. Each clinician dons gowns, gloves, and glasses and the patient is methodically moved to the O.R.

I was not going to give up on Krystal. Not now. I worked my way around what the Triage officer had ordered. He said Krystal was Priority Blue. Long story short, this basically means that other patients that have more chances of surviving take priority. In Krystal’s case, she was critical – almost fatal; so for lack of a better word, our resources and time could be better used on someone else that needs them and has more chances of surviving.
I protested and got the shift supervisor to hear me out. I put my case forward and argued against the ruling of Priority Blue.

“Krystal is only 20 years of age! We need to preserve this life, not give up on it! In the handbook it clearly states that Priority Blue can be overruled if there are less than 2 people in ER that are in need of life-threatening, urgent medical assistance. She needs us and she needs us NOW!”

We got the all clear and then it was all go. “CODE TRAUMA NOW!” I put the call out on the overhead pager. Everyone was ready. We moved her up to the O.R and I was scrubbing in.

“Dr Brennan?” I turned to see the man in charge of the O.R. “I’m sorry, but you are not allowed to scrub in for this one. As your patient, and returning with a life threatening case, you must not be part of it. If she doesn’t make it then you could lost your job.”

“But- she is going to make it... Isn’t she?”

“You know as well as I that after losing this much blood it can be hard to come back from. You need to go and talk to the family. Tell them the risks, the possibilities and why all this is happening.”

Notes

Just a short one. Thought I should probably do a little one just to reassure you :P A lot of you got genuinely worried!! <3
