Chapter 1

Raven's POV

"Here, let me help you." I color the tips of my fingers black and help Andy put his war paint on his face. I don't know how many times I've dreamed of doing this, and now here I am. I take the black ink and draw around his eyes and across his cheek and do a touch up here and there. "Thanks, doll." He smiles back at me and I do all I can to not blush the color of a tomato.

"You're welcome." I murmur before turning him around to face the mirror so he can inspect his makeup himself. With a nod of approval he turns back around and smiles while giving me the thumbs up. I look down to hide the blush on my face and smile. Before I know it, I feel a finger drawing my chin up and I'm looking up at him. "Don't look down, Raven. It looks perfect, really. Just like you." He gives me that heartbreaking smile and leans into kiss me.


I shoot straight up out of my bed and look around, glancing at the numbers on the alarm clock. I groan as the time reads 7:30 AM. School starts at 8:00 and I've missed my bus. I sluggishly drag myself out of my bed and quickly shower. Since I am already late, there is no point in trying to hurry now so I take my time with blow-drying my hair and using the flat-iron to straighten it. I apply my makeup as usual then go out to find my outfit. I tug on a pair of ripped skinnies and one of my many Black Veil Brides band tees. I slip on my ragged black and white DC's and grab my bag, not bothering to eat breakfast.

I reach the school by 8:30 and the halls are quiet, so far I've fallen under the radar and no one has noticed my tardiness. When I reach my locker I let out an audible sigh as I see the usual. Papers taped to my locker scream ugly words at me. "Emo", "Dyke", "Loser", "Freak". I shake my head and start pulling them down while I fight back tears. I bite my lip and take in a shaky breath and open my locker. I grab my things and head to 2nd period, English.

"Nice of you to join us, Raven. Care to explain why you are late to my class?" Mr. Connor asks. I don't answer at first and keep my head down as I make it to my seat. The other kids just stare and others point and laugh or make snide remarks. When he gets them calmed down he turns his attention back to me. "Did you not hear me? I asked why you were late to my class?" I sit up in my seat and shyly answer him. "I overslept and miss the bus so I had to walk. It won't happen again."

Mr. Connor sighs and removes his glasses before speaking. "You know the rule in my class, I'm afraid I have no choice but to give you detention after school for 2 weeks. Perhaps you'll learn your lesson there." I roll my eyes and slouch back down, preferring to be unseen and unheard, like usual. "Would you like to make it a month, Ms. Michelson?" He asks in an angry tone. I shake my head no and go about doodling on my paper.

By the time detention roles around I've finished all my homework and done the extra credit homework too. I lay my head down on my arms and plug my headphones in. In The End by Black Veil Brides starts blaring and I doze off into dreamland. A few minutes later my dreamland is rudely disturbed by someone yanking the ear bud from my ears. I jerk my head up ready to yell at the person when I realize it's my best friend, Scarlet.

"Fancy I see you you here! What did you do this time?" She asks with a pop of her bubble gum. I take out my other ear bud and turn in my desk to face her. "Late to Conner's class. Dick gave me 2 weeks of detention for it. What about you?" I ask with a nod of my chin in her direction. Scarlet pops another bubble and rolls her eyes before smiling at me. "Got caught with a cigarette on school grounds. Principal has me in this joint for 2 months." I smile and shake my head at her with a laugh.

I get ready to put my earphones back in when she grabs my arm and scoots closer to me. I sit up straight one more time and lean over as she whispers in my ear. "What are you doing in two weeks, Friday night?" I think for a second and look up at her and shrug. "Nothing that I know of why?" Scarlet grins and leans back. "Good, don't plan anything that night. I have a surprise for your birthday!"

I groan and close my eyes for a second. "You know I hate surprises and my birthday. You didn't have to do anything." I whisper to her between glances over at the teacher. She smiles and shrugs it off. "I know, but what kinda friend would I be if I knew your favorite band was coming to town and I didn't get tickets?!" My eyes almost bulge out my head at her words and my mouth drops open.
