Fight Against All Odds

Chapter 7

Andy missed Dr. Good's heart, but I saw dark red steadily soak the shoulder of his lab coat. Dr. Good responded by pulling out a gun and aiming it at Andy.

"LOOK OUT!" I screamed and Andy ducked.

"HEY TAKE COVER!!!!!" He shouted over the loud crack of his gun as he shot at Dr. good who was currently running to the exit.

I immediately dove under my desk and covered my head with my arms.

Luckily the noise from the guns didn't bother me much. I was used to it thanks to the many people shot out on the streets each day.

From what I could see and hear from under my desk I could tell things were in chaos. I could hear people screaming and sirens going off. Papers were flying everywhere and random people ran past where I was hiding frantically to get to the exit.

The thud of bodies hitting the ground made me shiver with fear.

I quietly peeked over my desk. Most of the "police" in their gray uniforms were lying on the floor unmoving. I saw several kids no older than twelve huddled in a corner, crying. Most of the zombie-like adults were exiting the building in a neat, orderly fashion without so much as a scream.

Andy was still on top of his desk. He pointed his gun at one of the police officers that were still standing and shot. Than all of a sudden he hopped down from the desk and held out his hand. He obviously wanted me to take it.

I took his hand and he pulled me up. There was no more shooting or police officers but there was still the danger more would come.

"Help me get the kids out of here," he asked calmly, "take them out the exit, there's a van waiting outside."

I nodded and walked towards the children. They backed away in fear.

"Hey I'm here to help you guys!" I said, trying to keep a positive tone in my voice. "You guys gotta follow me! Okay?"

Instead of following me they backed farther into the corner.

"I'm not gonna hurt you guys but the people here will if you don't come with me!" I said as calmly as I could.

I held out my hand to them. One of the older kids reluctantly took it and then the others huddled around me.

"We just gotta get to the exit!" I said as I walked. They followed closely. There was fear in their little eyes. I managed to walk them down the stairs and outside the building. Two men immediately ran to me when I got outside.

"Hey are these the kids from the factory?" They asked. Their language was too casual for them to be government zombies so I trusted them.

"Yeah."

"We'll take care of them from here," one of them said as they stepped towards the kids.

"It's okay they're gonna help you guys," I said soothingly as I saw the fear pop back into there eyes. Eventually the two men were able to get the children into two vans parked on the street.

"Thanks!" I said.

"Aren't you coming?" One of them asked.

"I gotta go check something!" I said as I re-entered the building and ran up to where my desk was.

There was a smell of smoke and blood in the air. There were several small fires in the room and dead bodies of police officers were everywhere. Papers were scattered across the floor along with random pens and other thinks kept at desks. I noticed the gray fabric I used to mend people's outfits was slowly burning on top of my desk.

I stepped through the room carefully. No one was in sight. Where had everyone gone?

I backed up slowly to the door.

"Just where do you think you're going, Miss Theresa Jones?" An all-to familiar voice asked from the shadows.

I froze and tried to locate the source of the voice. Then I felt the coolness of metal against my neck. A knife. An hand grabbed my shoulders and forced them against a wall.

"Too bad I didn't find the cure with you," Dr. Good sighed as he pressed the blade against my neck. Warm drops of blood dripped down my neck. I was too scared to scream. I struggled against him but he was too strong.

"LET GO OF ME!!!!" I managed to yell.

"Hey let her go!" A voice yelled from the other side of the room. Andy. He was pointing a gun at the doctor. Who released the pressure on the knife and turned slightly to face Andy while still pinning me to the wall. I just stared in fear.

"You'll still kill me if I let her go so what is the point?" He sounded bored.

"THE POINT IS IF YOU DON'T LET HER GO I'LL BLOW YOUR FUCKING HEAD OFF!" Andy said. He was angry. Like angry as in how he used to get angry when people came to his shows just to tell him he was a worthless fag angry, except a million times worse. I had seen videos of him cussing out haters who came to his shows holding up signs that said stuff like "fag" or "BVB sucks". That was nothing compared to his face right now.

"No need for the harsh language," Dr. Good said. I swear he was smiling.

"FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING CUNT NEED ANYMORE 'LANGUAGE' CUZ ILL GIVE YOU SOME NOW LET HER GO!!!!" Andy yelled.

"Let me live and I'll let her go."

"No."

"Fine then," he said as he turned to me, the pressure on the blade against my neck increasing again.

"FINE I WON'T KILL YOU IF YOU LET HER GO!!!" Andy yelled, lowering his gun.

Dr. Good suddenly released me. In an instant he was gone, almost as if he had just disappeared. I realized I had been holding my breath. I breathed in deeply the touched my neck. I could feel warm blood still slowly trickling from the wound.

I looked down. I was in shock and I felt no emotion. I just stood there and tried to make myself come back to reality.

Andy was walking towards me.

"I'm so sorry Grace," Andy whispered as I felt his arms wrap around me. He was hugging me so tightly I could hear the steady beat of his heart through his chest.

I just stood there and wondered why he was sorry.

After a couple of seconds he pulled away.

"We need to get back to the vans," he said.

He grabbed my hand and led me outside the building. The same two vans were still parked, but I could hear sirens in the distance. Great. Just great. The police.

We ran to one of the vans and one of the guys I had seen from before opened the door.

"Get in! Hurry!" He yelled.

I got in the van and Andy climbed in and sat next to me. Four other kids plus two adults were also in it.

Finally the realization of freedom hit me. To my surprise I started crying.

And even more to my surprise Andy was hugging me again.

"It's okay Grace you're gonna be free now," Andy said. He brushed my hair behind my ear then kissed my cheek.

I blushed.

Andy laughed. "You're really cute when you blush like that!"

I was going to be free. I pulled my iPod out of my pocket and played it on speaker so everyone could hear.

"NEVER GIVE IN! NEVER BACK DOWN!"

I am crying. i cant believe andy almost died. I often get fanfiction confused with real life, and since andy was a real person rather than just a character, it was like he really died to me. that was a sick joke >:(
